my board!

well, it's being hosted by TOGRC, but it's very neat in my opinion, and i need traffic there.

http://www.togrc.com/forums/?ID=megasmash

also, how do i get more traffic, i've seen many other Vb boards get LOTS of members, how do i do that? :dead:

Dean C 01-28-2003 08:01 PM

There are several ways.

The best way however is to allow your threads to be indexed by search engines. There are 3 hacks around that do that :)

Xenon 01-28-2003 08:05 PM

you show up as unlicensed so you can't download any hacks of course.

i think it has to do with the hosting...
i don't know if the hosting is legally, currently your site is down so i can't check anything..

N9ne 01-28-2003 08:09 PM

Where did he get that community chest thing from :D

Xenon 01-28-2003 08:14 PM

looks like it's implementet by the host..

call the url without the id ;)

Ember 01-28-2003 08:17 PM

How did they do that ID=xxx thing?

Xenon 01-28-2003 08:20 PM

well, it's a hosting company, so i believe they have some good hackers to do that things ;)

but you'd have to ask them yourself ;)

Logik 01-28-2003 08:22 PM

I believe you're right xenon.

Ember 01-28-2003 08:23 PM

Ack, aint up for that, lol.... I wouldnt use it anyway, I prefer having hosted forums as catagories as it is :)

Pennyair 01-28-2003 08:23 PM

It IS legal. i asked the owner and he showed me the OFFICAL e-mail from Vbulletin.com about hosting. ask Steve Machol if you don't beleive me. or, i'll show you if you want me to. :)

Logik 01-28-2003 08:29 PM

Yes.You can kinda look at it and tell its pirated.. Steve. Do something about this.

Pennyair 01-28-2003 08:40 PM

fine. click here to see that i'm right. and also, the server isn't down. ;)

assassingod 01-28-2003 09:10 PM

If your forum is legal, then enter your license number and password in the link in Xenon's post to show up as being licensed here and to receive support.

sabret00the 01-28-2003 09:21 PM

he wouldn't have one as he's basically just been given a forum to make into his own in an ezboard style fashion

I don't know how I got dragged into this but I do not know for certain that this forum and setup is legal or not. However even if it is, you are not the licensed owner and because of this you are not eligible for support. You will need to get your support from the license holder.

*sighs* i already tried. he gave me the message. it's in here:

quote IN THE THREAD THAT SAYS: "moonlight are you sure this isn't illegal?":
posted by moonlight

Like I said numerous time in the past, I have a valid vBulletin license, and yes, they are expensive.

Also, I asked permission from them (vBulletin) before offering vBulletin hosting, which they said it was ok.

The vBulletin license says that you can have one copy of vBulletin in 1 database. So, I have one copy of vBulletin (that is why it is always /forums/) and all is running from the same database.

Here is their answer :
Quote:

Thanks for the note - this should be no problem. Provided
that the installation of vBulletin consists of one set of
PHP files reading from a single database, you will be able
to make the changes to the software as specified in your
email.
And that was written by James Limm, the Product Manager of vBulletin.

so you see? i have nothing more to say.

correct.

didn't i explain this before, Erwin? this is a hosting forum powered by a single database of Vbulletin. and because of that, i don't have a password.

i give up, nobody belives me (not like no one ever has;)) so you can put this thread to hell in a handbasket for all i care now.

oh, and to awnser the question about the "powered by VB" look at the bottom-left corner, idiots.

Link14716 01-28-2003 10:45 PM

Well, it was said at vB.com by Steve I think that that was NOT legal.

Quote:

A vBulletin license grants you the right to run one instance (a single installation) of vBulletin on one web server and one web site for each license purchased. Each license may power one instance of vBulletin on one domain. For each installed instance of the program, a separate license is required.
Each time the tables are added to a database, prefixed or not, it is a new instance of vB. Therefore, what is being done there is NOT legal.

mr e 01-28-2003 10:46 PM

he meant the Powerd by vB that's usually in the title of the page

and "steve", your the "top guy"...or the "most popular", that's why you got "dragged" into "it" ;)

mr e 01-28-2003 10:48 PM

oh now that i look at it, he's got at least 2 db's so if he only has one license it is illegal...

Gosh - I''m blushing! ;)

Link14716 01-28-2003 11:01 PM

Ok, so if my calculations are correct, if everyone there would have gotten a valid vB license, but decided not to when they found TOGRC, then vBulletin lost a minimum of $24,905 (leased licenses) and a maximum of $46,880 (owned license). How exactly is the giving away of free vB's legal? Each set of the tables count (in my mind at least) as a seperate instance of the software. I really don't see how just becuase they all use the same files it makes it any different from them having 293 different sets of files. The only difference is that they can add hacks more easily to it and the files don't take up as much space. Also, they are giving away free UBB.threads, and I don't think that that will set well with Infopop either...

Take this example. What if you modified a program, hey, let's say CuteFTP Pro, and made it where you can have it make seperate config file/registry keys. You give everyone in your neighborhood network access to your computer, and they run CuteFTP Pro and have it make a seperate settings set for them. So now you have everyone running CuteFTP Pro for their own purposes. Would this be legal?

Logik 01-28-2003 11:10 PM

Yeap. 100% correct.

mr e 01-28-2003 11:40 PM

nice example :)

And because you don't have a license, you don't get support here at vB.org. :)

Geez, relax. No need to start cussing and calling people idiots. :) It's all good. The license owner can give you access by adding you as part of his account. That is up to the license owner.

Xenon 01-30-2003 12:54 PM

Ok it's enough now.

It's irrelevant wether the board is legal or not.
Users just get support here when they show up as a licenced Admin of their own board.

Hosting companies normaly won't give you acces to the vb-file, becaue there is just one file set on theri server, also just one db-table set.

When you need support, you have to ask your hostingcompany, here's the wrong place, especially when you call others as idiots
