Do you ever have members call your house?
wtf? I have this nutjob on my board calling me at home. She's not threatening or anything like that, she basically came on my site accusing another member of some pretty intense stuff, however when she cant back the accusations up with anything (ip addresses, etc), she decides to do a whois and call me to try to "convince" me over the friggen phone https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/ :paranoid:
|
Then there is the question: How did she get your phone number in the first place?
|
I was an ignorant fool and put my real number on my Domain name details (the info you can get from the WHOIS lookup) :paranoid:
|
I'd get your phone provider to ban her phone number if i were you

/me agrees with Mist
Or change your number as a last resort. :s I filled out the form in complete, too, with phone details that are now listed in the WhoIs. It rather sucks that the details can't be easily changed, as far as I know. I geuss maybe contacting a registrar (which doesn't do much now that she already knows your number, granted, but it might prevent others from doing the same thing). Also, future registrations can be done "privately" so none of your contact information can be looked up. It's usually an extra fee, I believe about $9/private registration at godaddy.com, but worth it to prevent situations like this. People who call other people from online are rather ... creepy. In my opinion, of course. |
Hey Julie by telling us how that lady got your phone number it means you could get crazy people from here phoning you :p
Might want to get than changed asap :p - miSt |
This is the good thing about .uk domains, you need to submit your details but can easily opt out of having them shown on a whois output for no extra cost. I'd complain if you have to pay, its a breach of your privacy.

Julie, I suggest you change your home phone number immediately. I hope you don't have your home address shown publically as well.
Never reveal your home details online - it is just too dangerous. |
he he, yeah, change your number and ban the bum. Probably teach her not to call ya up again. does she have any proof for anything?
|
/me writes down Julie's number :cheeky:
|
I list a PO box and my mobile number on my whois... so I'm not too worried about anything :)
|
Yes, ive had 3 members call me, one from canada.
|
nope, never. I had a psycho from ebay call me once who lost my auction to a sniper who took it in the last 10 seconds. He told me if I didn't give it to him he would bid up all my auctions & not pay. He was just a kid too, probably 15 or 16. I didn't report it or anything and never heard from him again. It was just a gameboy game too, sold for $12. Lots of psychos out there. If I ever had a forum member call me, I'd just laugh.
|
Its been quite an interesting day to say the least :paranoid: Ever since we became a ban-free, censorship free board, we get alot of, umm, strange ones on there :alien:
|
No the only members of my site that call me are my friends that are members of my site :)
|
Freakin'
|
hmmm, a bunch of my mods and a few members have got my phone number, i got one verging on creepy/stalker situation going on but that was my own fault, bar that, nah!
altho i swear that the same person (stalker) used to call my house before i switched phone operator!!! |
I have had a few people call me on my original site not the ones I run now. Yes its creepy and they don't want to talk about anything cept to say "hi" and "whats going on?"
|
With some of my experience, we had around 12 people playing phone tag. It was certainly interesting, and I had a new excuse to make fun of my boards co-admin.
|
Ugh, I have a tragic-type chick who thinks it's my duty as a site owner to listen to incessant whining about the injustices of life and counsel her accordingly on a regular basis.
One word, Caller-ID ;) |
Caller-ID was the best invention ever

now I know where to send this poster, thanks :) |
i had that once

That has happened to me also... and I got a call from a famous person too! :)
I run a Musclecar website and most of my users aren't into the Import scene.. They like American Musclecars with big V8s. Anyway, one day I got a call from someone named "Lisa Kubo".. She said that while searching google she found a thread on my forum that was insulting her and she wanted it removed. At the time, I had no idea who she was or what she was talking about but I promised to delete this thread if that would make her happy. When I finally saw the thread in question I knew exactly who she was.. She is a very famous import drag racer ( http://womensracingjournal.com/nov2002/kubo.php )! In the thread, a couple of my members were making fun of her "pink" honda Civic and one of them made a rude remark about her being a little overweight (this is what was offending her). Anyway, I deleted the thread and never heard anything from her again. When I figured out how she got my number (from whois) I removed it (I had no idea it was even listed). |
Group,
Even though nobody has made a reply to this post in the past 3 years, and I know sometimes people freak out for posting to an "inactive" post, I really cant see why, but anyway I would like to add to this post the following information. I myself have never had any site members call me up from the whois database like some of you have, but I have had domain registration companies and web hosting companies call me up shortly after registering a domain name trying to sell me their services. From what I could tell it was like they get sent a notification alert right after you register, because it was usually less than 48 hours they would be calling me. After about 3 or 4 of those phone calls I finally change the number on my whois information and the calls stopped. Doug |

What I do these days is keep a pre-paid cell phone around for this kind of stuff. I keep maybe 20 minutes on it and give that number to anyone I don't want calling my house or *real* cell phone. I think I've switched pre-paid numbers about 4 times to date (the free phones they give you last about 3 months if you're lucky). |

Personally guys I dont even bother with all the BS and hassel of doing all that. I just put in a fake number and leave it at that. Doug |
god it's so easy to get someone's personal info like phone # and address just by doing a google search. It's happened to me
|
I do have a throwaway phone number in the Seattle area I got for free (even has "spam" or "junk" in the numbers). I use it now for virtually everything.
Just as there are visual captchas, there should be audio ones to verify a person is calling, not a machine; for example, it says "Repeat this number: 147" and if the person does, they're believed to be human. |
