Download Manager
I'm thinking of starting a new community web site. I plan on using vB for the forums and user management, but I'd also like to include a files section where members can download files. NOTE: This will not be a warez site.
Since I'm a huge fan of Deviant Art [link], some of what I'm thinking of doing would be similar in nature. Basically, a central repository of files, broken down by category, with the ability to rate the file, etc. Does anyone have any recommendations for the download manager? Has anyone written a hack that ties the two together? I know that vB can be used for downloads, but it doesn't work quite the way I want it to. If anyone has any recommendations, I'm all ears. :bunny: |
i am looking for something along these lines as well.. i have a vBportal front end, and would like to add user submitted downloads.. where the users actually have the ability to upload files.. and then a moderator/admin then goes and accepts or denies the submitted download..
i have also posted in the phpportals.com forums looking for this same thing, as well.. if anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated!! |
Glad to see that I'm not alone. :)

Hmm.. what will they be downloading?
|
For my purposes, the new community site I'm creating is for video content formatted for Palm OS devices. So, they would be downloading .pdb files for their device.
Simpson files, Palm ads, that sort of thing. |
for my site, it will be files relating to Unreal Tournament 2003.. user made mutators and maps and such directly relating to a specific game type..

Mashby,
Have a look at http://www.virtuanews.co.uk/ ... a news/CMS system that can use the vb user tables and has a files download module (modules are free). Cheers, ~Regs. |
Thanks for the link!
I'm taking a look at the site now, but is there any module that integrates this into vB? |
not to mention they want $100 to use their system.. seems a bit pricey with the availability of many other free CMS's..
guess this is a no go for now.. but sure would be handy!! |
I took a deeper look and this system DOES integrate with vBulletin. Overall it's not too bad. This is the closest thing I've seen thus far that gives me what I'm looking for.

Most CMS's out there perform an average of 40-100 queries, that's a crime for your server on a busy site. I would not install them on my site, even if you pay me. |
Teck,
So, I assume that you run VirtuaNews? How long have you been running it and do you recommend it? |
TECK doesn't run virtuanews :)
I believe it's based on vbhome_lite though :) - miSt |

vBulletin, for an owned license, is $160.. server prices vary depending on your host and what you need from the host.. i use a dedicated server and it is $139 a month.. so money is tight.. especially since my site is a FREE site for community members.. so i use what is available, and mess around with variables until things seem to perform to the best of their, and my, abilities.. so no, i am not spending another $100 on something that i can get for free.. while your argument is valid, and true, it, for my particular intentions, is not worth the extra $100 i would have to shell out for it.. so i will gladly use vBportal with a vBulletin back end.. and i have contributed to the vBportal team in the way of money, and will continue to do so on an annual basis.. those guys work very hard on what they have, and it does ALMOST everything i need.. so yes, you may be right as far as your statement goes, but you also have to see the story from both sides when money is concerned and a lot of people use what is available and contribute back to that rather than having to shell out money for something upfront that may put more of a hinderance on their pocket book than a helping hand on their server.. |

I'd hate for a business to be misrepresented here on vb.org Cheers, ~Regs. |
No i'm pretty sure of it. TECK mentioned it somewhere IIRC :)
