GZip And What Does It Do?

could some one please tell me what GZip is and how it works... and also how does this effect your forum....??

filburt1 12-23-2002 03:13 AM

Compresses the pages it sends to your browser to reduce bandwidth. Barely increases server load if you set it properly (1).

Tony G 12-23-2002 03:13 AM

Also makes pages load faster with the compressing it does. Obviously. ;)

It's very much like having the server zip down the file before it sends it to your browser, which in turn unzips it before showing it to you.

Sebastian 12-23-2002 05:44 PM

if you have a big pipe gzip does nothing and may actually hold things up for really big connections. all it really will do it save some bandwidth..

I have a dedicated server on a dedicated Dual DS3 and noticed no improvment besides saving a few MB's.

If you have a really popular board, even if set gzip to 1 it can slow down the server if you have 200 - 400 members online.

filburt1 12-23-2002 07:05 PM

You'll still pay for the bandwidth if you turn it off so it's really pointless to not turn it on.

Sebastian 12-23-2002 07:16 PM

yes, it is pointless not to turn if on IF you have only a few GB's alloted a month, but when you have unlimited bandwidth as i do it becomes pointless as all it does it higher the server load with 200 members even on (1). gzip is only really good when on a shared server that only gives you xx amount of bandwidth per month. you will not see many big sites with gzip on as all it does it slows down the server even further with a lot of users online.

lol :ermm:
Unlimited bw? :D
Obviously you don't have a 'huge' site, coz if you did you wouldn't say that. :o

Sebastian 12-23-2002 10:35 PM

no, your right, I don't have a 'huge' site as in number of members, but I do get a lot of visits...

.. and there is such a thing as 'unlimited' bandwidth, which is what I have, dedicated web/sql server on a ds3, provided by dsldesigns. you know not everyone likes to be on a server with 80 other accounts.. i guess that is what your used to seeing.

Velocd 12-23-2002 11:04 PM

Give it up to Sebastian <insert audience applause>, man with the dedicated server. :p

Well, not everyone is wealthy enough to pay $100 (or whatever the going rate is now adays) for a dedicated server :P

But no bitterness here, I'm fine with my puny 14GB/month rate ^_^ (well, for now....) As for the .gzip thing, I use it..although with my small site there is hardly a notice. ;)

nuno 12-23-2002 11:35 PM

No you haven't.
There's no such thing as unlimited bandwidth.
What you have is Unmetered bandwidth. ;)

LOL yeah, but you know what i meant by it.. and yes, i know 'unmetered' bandwidth can be expensive.. but not when you know the right people :)

nuno 12-24-2002 12:15 AM

Even so, they are sooooo greedy :D
I'd rather not go into that discussion, that's another story. ;)

Sparkz 12-24-2002 12:22 AM

I pay the dazzeling sum of 0.0 bucks per month for my dedicated server with 'unmetered' bandwith.
Don't you just hate me now? :p

Tim Wheatley 12-25-2002 06:19 PM

I hate to be annoying but...

My host is contracted to provide facilities which meet any requirements we need as a site in terms of hardware and bandwidth. If that's not 'unlimited' - what is? :)

Tim Wheatley 12-25-2002 06:20 PM

(for free too)

nuno 12-25-2002 06:54 PM

Who's your host?Verio?

Tim Wheatley 12-27-2002 02:19 AM

We're a gaming site focused on online gaming, out host happens to supply broadband connections needed to do it. :)

They also most graciously allow us to take over other rivals and set them up as sub-sites, we're planning on eventually taking over the world, person by person... *holds little finger to corner of mouth in best Dr Evil fashion and laughs loudly*

Novembers hits were over 25 million for the forums alone - they get their money's worth. :)

Derek 12-27-2002 02:59 AM

What do they get from this deal then? And did you actually sign a contract with them?

Sebastian 12-27-2002 03:52 AM

well, at least for me, i just happen to know a sys admin for an isp, so basically, it's a matter of knowing the right people to get such service :)
