Question about hacks
Quick question. If a hack is installed on a board that is used by all members of a board, and you get someone saying it's not working for them would the problem most likely be an issue with the person's computer etc.. or is it possible it could be a problem with the board/hack itself even though it works for everyone else?
|
More than likely, it will be a problem with that single person.
What hack is it that is troubling a certain user? The hack you speak of proberbly has some JavaScript dotted about it, and that user is proberbly using a pants browser..... some people do, because they don't think realistically. Internet Explorer is the top browser.... but try telling that to some people who just go "blinkered" and say, "M$ are rubbish... security blah blah... whine whine whine... etc. etc.". |
thanks for the reply DSS. the hack I am referring to is the "Since your last visit" hack that shows the exact amount of threads/posts since their last visit. I have been trying to find a way to incorporate this hack at the member level so it reflects correctly the amount of new threads/posts based on a person's permission level.
In the case of this thread though we have someone who is having an issue with this, but permissions wouldnt be the problem in this one instance. Since the hack works across the board im betting its a problem with his computer. Would you still agree? And if so do you have any suggestions on what I could have him do to remedy this? Thanks again :) |
MOST likely it's a problem with the user and his/her computer. But it CAN Be a problem on your side.

any clue on how i can verify if its something with my board or him?

If you are still getting problems with things showing up in forums that certain users do not have access to, then check out this thread :
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...threadid=43056 ... it's function I wrote a month or two ago, that does exactly that. We don't use the normal "Private Forum" flag to say which forums are private, nor do we use "Access Masks" to give user by user access. We set the Usergroup CANVIEW value on a usergroup by usergroup basis. That is, we set each parent forum (forum category) permissions for each usergroup - either saying CANVIEW, or not. We then set each permission for each actual posting forum to 'inherit from parent forum'. We do that because we have a different needs for different usergroups. But that method is a good idea for any board setup, I think. So, check out that thread, and you see that at the end of the function, you get a 'string list' of forums a user cannot view... you can then use a WHERE clause like this : [sql] .... WHERE (forumid NOT IN ($forumsCannotView_strList)) ... [/sql] If you can get that specific user having the problem on your board to give you the error message he is getting, post it here. |
thanks for that DSS i will look into this and let you know if I have any questions. appreciate the help :)
