Linear Hybrid and Threaded

I think this would be an awesome idea for version 2.2.x I am not going to upgrade to vb 3 because I just have way to many hacks to give up and install again. If u dont no this kool feature go to www.vbulletin.com and look at there vb3 beta. It is a really kool feature you can find in the showthread.

Does anyone think this is a really hard thing to install for 2.2x?

Sparkz 12-07-2002 02:51 PM

Even if someone implemented it, it would only work on new threads anyways, as there is no way to identify the parent of a post (which is required to do threaded views) in the current db structure.

Xenon 12-07-2002 03:03 PM

the badest thing in vb3 (my opinion) you want included in vb2?
weird..

Sparkz is right, you have to change the post table, and every function which works on that.... (splitting threads and so on)
so if you really want this, you should upgrade...

o i c damn

oh thank god, I'm not alone! :rambo:

If this feature is not optional in vb3, I can be the first hacker to remove it from the code forever.

Chris M 12-08-2002 12:57 PM

And as soon as you do, can you post instructions on how to do the same for me please:)

I hate Threaded and Hybrid view:(

Xenon 12-08-2002 12:57 PM

:)
it's optional, and can be turned of in acp :) (uff, have had luck :))

also i think it's problematic in following a thread.
I checked out a thread at vb.com and betwen a nice discussion there was a yes you can do so by Steve Machol.
First i though was huh??
do he want to spam now????
shorty switched to threaded view and saw, that he was reffering to a post 2 sites before.....

Chris M 12-08-2002 01:07 PM

Lol...

Threaded view reminds me of E-Feds;)

The worst thing with them is nobody knows how to use them and people just tend to click "REPLY" button regardless of their location in the thread. So thread order is always ruined in these threads. You click a so-looking reply to X and it has nothing to do with that message, just replies somebody else etc.

Xenon 12-08-2002 01:31 PM

it's because of the combination
if you read the thread linear, you just click on reply after the last post, as it was always...

Chris M 12-08-2002 01:44 PM

Yes...

Linear makes so much more sense:)

Sparkz 12-08-2002 01:46 PM

It's just a matter of getting used to it, I believe.
If everyone used threaded view, and the style was made in a sensible way, it could be pretty neat.

Chris M 12-08-2002 04:36 PM

Yeh...

Probably...

But vB2, UBB, OpenBB, Ikonboard, PhpBB, and WBB, and alot of other types of board use linear:)

It would take ALOT of forced exposure to get used to it:)

Actually at this time it's not an option that can be turned off. The Developers are considering adding this option but it'll depend on how many people want the ability to run this off.

Xenon 12-08-2002 05:29 PM

i thought it was?

hmm, from what i've heard it's the most hated and also most requested feature of the new vb3.
it devides the community ;)
i think there are much more out who don't like it, but perhaps i just see more of them because i don't like it myself...

nevertheless turning it off as an option i think is needed, it'll confuse much people out if it's always possible....

Steve Machol 12-08-2002 05:37 PM

The place to post your opinions about threaded view is on vbulletin.com where the Developers can read them.

Chris M 12-08-2002 06:07 PM

Note taken;):)

I do hope there is an option to disable it:)

*gg*
Steve is right, i think we got a "bit" offtopic now...

but i know i've mentioned such things more than once over at vb.com and also at beta.vbulletin.com already

Agreed. While users may like being able to use different views, its becomes more usefull IMO when the board uses only one method, that way threads shown in "threaded view" are more likly to be "threaded" as people are going to be replying to the post they wish to repspond to and not just the last post in a thread. Also every other post seems to contain a full quote of the post its replying to, although this is probably a style issue.
