Redistributing Hacks?

I sorta feel violated in some way, but someone posted a hack I co-wrote with viol4ted.

http://www.webz4u.com/forums/showthr...s=&threadid=59

Also not to mention that a person came asking for my hack, and is probably not a licensed vBulletin user (which would explain why he couldn't download it in the first place)

I submitted his URL, but as for my main question is should I ask that the hack be removed and on what basis????

DrkFusion 10-12-2002 03:59 PM

They shouldn't redistribute hacks like that :-/

Kill Him I say :)

I swear lolik (the user who wanted the hack) is an unlicensed vBulletin owner...

go look for yourself

He got rid of the copyright, so I thought maybe he bought a license to remove the copyright. I took a peek in the vBulletin admin area, and I see vBulletin 2.2.6

Isn't the current version 2.2.8? :D :p

DrkFusion 10-12-2002 04:13 PM

Yea I agree

Chris M 10-12-2002 04:22 PM

Erm...

@ManagerJosh - Up until about a week after the release of vB 2.2.8, I was using vB 2.2.6, and I am a liscenced user...

Pixeljunction still uses vB 2.2.6...

Perhaps he did pay to get the copyright removed? Who knows;)

Then why would he/she be asking for a hack and needing someone else to get it for them?

NTLDR 10-12-2002 10:07 PM

I've found many a site re-distributing hacks, I've reported them all to Chen with a test username and pass, but depending where in the world they are it can be difficult to stop them. If they are in the UK or US then vB probably have a good change of them being removed :)

Dean C 10-13-2002 10:51 AM

yea i know of lots of sites re-distributing hacks..

i found a site yesterday with a hack to get users passwords... a bit of the coding was wrong... but i got it to work on my testboard..

i know we can't be responsible for this and i sure as hell wont use this hack on any board i run...

But i think the vbulletin.com / .org staff should come up with some copyright on all the hacks and be WILLING to take action against anyone re-distributing the hacks..

Also i think there should be a clause in the contract of buying your vb that says if it is proved you have access to users passwords then action can be took agains that person..

I love to screw people over for doing that... I myself get great enjoyment out of it.

LOL!:D

Well, the copyright of the hacks actually belong to the hack author from a legal point of view. So it is up to the hack author to enforce his or her own rights, not up to vB.org.

ManagerJosh 10-14-2002 05:09 AM

since I co-wrote it, do I have any rights? or must i ask viol4ted to help? :)

Erwin 10-14-2002 06:03 AM

That depends on how you've arranged it with your co-author. Usually both of you have intellectual property rights over the whole of the code. Either one of you can sue this other guy for breach of copyright, and for using your code without permission, even if you haven't got a copyright statement in the hack.

Okay thanks erwin.
