PhpBB getting ready for vb3?

My host, is a programmer at phpBB.

He has been going on about phpBB' new portal, and a new project that is to be competing with vb3.

Anyone have any information on this?
Im not really worried or anything, I think it would be a bit fun to see what they are planning, or doing.

*note* I have nothing against any phpbbers ;)

filburt1 10-03-2002 08:57 PM

Competition is always good. :)

NTLDR 10-03-2002 09:43 PM

I'm sure the vB Dev's are shaking in there boots :D

Xenon 10-03-2002 10:05 PM

Well, phpbb wouldn't have a real chance ;)
but who know, perhaps they've got other good ideas which we have to hack in vb3 ;)

Neo 10-04-2002 12:42 PM

Doesn really matter. I think its lame that all these forum people have to try and compete.. most of them are completely worthless like phpbb, ubb, and any others you can think of.. they can try to make it but in the end did phpbuilder.com choose any of them? Did flashkit.com? There are so many corperate sites that have used VB is insane.. I think they should just shoot themselves.

All most other BBs out there are vB wannabe's :p

Xenon 10-04-2002 04:47 PM

don't be such as hard neo.

phpbb for example has a strong position in smaller sites, where the siteadmin cannot buy a vb licence

the other boards have also a right to exist, and it's good for vb,too that they exist, because as i said sometimes they have good ideas, which can be included to vb... ;)

Dean C 10-04-2002 06:46 PM

ikonboard have a few tricks up their sleeve too...

ive been talking to one of the programmers for ib PHP (i think thats what its called) and it seems quite nice...

DrkFusion 10-04-2002 10:34 PM

iB Php was a project announce publicly for awhile now.

Its actually mentioned on there site, alot of site admins are looking forward to it, it seems as it has high hopes to wipe out Invision Board.

when they had the debug info on the ib PHP site it had 48 queries on forum home and about 60 queries on forumdisplay and it hit a ridculous 80 queries on showthread.

I think they need some work.

Alot of the smaller sites will end up using vB, once they use phpBB2 or ibForums and their board starts to grow in size they will need something like vB, its mainly popular due to the support time is under an hour in the support tickets and that its supported by a paid development team which guarantees its not going to disappear overnight.

Neo 10-04-2002 11:39 PM

I am just playing yo.. and Scott is correct.

Xenon 10-05-2002 10:03 AM

;)

yes scott is correct.

when sites grow ther's no way to use something other than vb :)
but till they grow the smaller software can help poor webmasters ;)

Chris M 10-05-2002 11:34 AM

Yep...

Dean C 10-05-2002 12:37 PM

You are very correct, phpbb just cannot be used the way vb has been used on many sites. Not to mention vB also represents our sites, they give the visitor a more professional look at our site. vB has done that alot.

O and they also have a discussion war between Threaded View and Linear View...

No need to be a fanatic for a software you use. Both vb and phpbb are nice forum scripts. It's true that vb is more advanced but I always appreciate phpbb guys are giving it away free. Considering fact that it's free, phpbb can be a very strong incentive to many people and I see more phpbb boards then vb boards around when I surf on the internet.

I dont agree its used by smaller boards. I know a lot of very large boards using phpbb.

I also dont agree its performance is bad. On the user side, I didnt experienced any extra load on phpbb. Actually one of the sites (which is very crowded) I'm usually visit switched from vbulletin to phpbb and I can say that their load is decreased visibly and now board access is much more faster for members than before.

I am not telling phpbb is better than vb. If I did, my site would be using phpbb, not vbulletin. But I'm just stating that both software has its own advantages or disadvanteges and every Admin can regard one better for his needs according to his priorities. Both software is quite complex in technical terms and I believe developers of the both programs deserves appreciation.

Anyway I agree with filburt1: Competition is always good. ;)

Dean C 10-06-2002 06:34 PM

Josh... phpbb's default style (design) [i]is[/b] better than vbulletins current one...

i hope that will change for vb3 :D

- miSt

Xenon 10-06-2002 07:22 PM

well it depends on point of view Mist.

Personally i like the standart Style from vb more than the one from phpbb.
That's why i use purple style here ;)

I have to agree with Xenon. the vb default purple looks soooooo much better than the phpBB default Skin. Only reason why people use that default skin is because they don't know how to change it...

But I like the Dark Blue look a little more. Primarily because those graphics Sinecure did adds an accent to these forums :)

NTLDR 10-06-2002 09:28 PM

vB's default purple style is far more professional looking IMO, which is what it should be like which the kind of market it is aimed at.

Dean C 10-07-2002 05:53 PM

i disagree... but thats my opinion ;)

Erwin 10-08-2002 01:04 AM

I use the purple vB style here at vB.org too - much more easier to read.

yep I agree. Actually I dont like the color purple but it's the much easier to read style among vb.org styles. However I wish we had a style with "light" colors (eg. white), all vb.org styles are unfortunately dark.. :bored:

Xenon 10-08-2002 11:38 AM

yes, i don't like purple as a color, too, but it's really the best style to read.
Ok i'd change the purple into a nice green with gray buttons...
hey i've done this on my site *gg*

Pal: all styles are dark? I think the green styles here aren't dark, i think they're to bright, but also hard to read...

You are right. I guess I ignored it since I dont like it much.

zachb 10-08-2002 07:21 PM

I love the green. I used to use purple before green came, though. I agree, the purple is very nice and easy to read.
