Changes to Hack Posting

We've made a few small changes to the hack posting process in order to both enforce the existing rules, and help better organize new hacks. We will be making even more changes when vB3 rolls around, but here's what's been done for now:

First, you must read and agree to the rules every time you post a hack. These include stating, up front, what type of support you will be providing for your hack. Remember, you don't have to provide support, but you must make this very clear.

Second, to make your support choice clear, we have provided a box to check if you intend to provide support. (This is not yet in place, but will be later today.)

Third, you must add your hack to our Hacks Database. This is to aid in organizing the hacks. The Hacks Database will be improved in the near future, as will the orgranization of the Releases forum, and this is a very important step in preparing for both of these changes. If you don't have time to add it when you make your post, your post will be put the moderation queue and you will be provided a URL to return to when you are ready to add your hack. When you have done that, your post will be visible in the Releases forum.

sharp man. keep up the good work boys.

Logician 09-25-2002 08:03 PM

how will we edit our existing hacks? Neither hack db record nor, thread editing seems to populate new fields..

[edit]figured it out thanks anyway[/edit]

Very good Idea IMO, means all the hacks are in the DB and clearly states at the top if the author will provide support. Definatly a step in the right direction :)

Interesting addition.. but still non-support offer non-productive. It is same conception for IRL *shrug* I ll know which to install or not install since I ll know if it s support or not. Thanks

Xenon 09-25-2002 09:41 PM

Well, i install hacks which i need, that doesn't depend on the fact if an author gives support or not...

and that was also so a year ago, when i didn't have the php knowledge i have now.

btw:
nearly every showthread now has 30 queries.
you should reduce that dear Admins ;)

hypedave 09-25-2002 10:00 PM

how about making a forum wide annoucement?

Goldknight 09-25-2002 10:14 PM

@ Xenon, you re probably right about it but I dont want to use any non-productive or install any hacks if they refuse to provide the support. It is not making any sense at least. Why should I have to click the install when hacker of that hack refuse to provide the support? I wonder will you buy the computer without any kind of support even though you know that it will support them by "buy" their product? As I said, it is all same conception to me, if they refuse to provide the support then I can always ask others to make or make some kind of replicia AND provide the support or make my own then release it at here with support. That s how it look to me, I never intend to offense anyone about this, basically I speak my mind out so no offense to anyone. Practical is the key for anyone even if it s free or commerical. If without support, we will not have any market or even stock at stock exchange right now. It is really sad that it is not practically thing to do. *shrug* people always will be people..

Excellent idea. I applaud the vB.org team in making these steps to organize the hacks here. :)

Admin 09-26-2002 06:27 AM

Xenon: I took it down to 24-25 this morning. :)

TECK 09-26-2002 06:39 AM

i just saw it now. :)
congrats.

I should post some hacks to try it out.. maybe now people will understand the rules.

Logician 09-26-2002 08:20 AM

Maybe you would also consider creating some incentives to hack authors so that they would voluntarily choose the give support.

Like:
* Listing only hacks with support in the main page
* Giving these hacks some priority in some places like hack db, listing in full releases etc.
* Putting a "distinguishing" mark next to hack names to get attention.
* Getting a random hack with support from hack db and displaying it in full releases header etc.

Just a thought which could increase "supported" hacks..

Xenon 09-26-2002 10:42 AM

good work chen, however 28 now ;)

@Goldknight: Ok, i can't say anything about your Opinion, but me, i also buy a computer without getting support from the vender, the only thing is that i want my money back if it doesn't work, but that's a thing you cannot make here, because nobody pays for downloading a hack ;)
But as said, it's ok if you don't download hacks where the writers don't give support, but you shouldn't request such a hack anymore, because everyone will link to the released one.
Also you can get support from other hackers as well in the supportforum..

Goldknight 09-26-2002 04:47 PM

@Xenon, as I stated above, that you re probably right about this. Oh about request, I stopped request at there since all of my requests or at least 80 percents of requests from members are ignored anyway, so it didnt mean anything to me lately.

As for non-supports, I know I shouldnt bring up since people are adamant about it by natural. Anyway thanks for responding and offer your prespective.

like these new things... good work :)

I won't say that!
I try to response as much request as i can, also Logician and others do so.
Of course a request of a real great hack isn't the same here. Who writes a Hack which himself won't use for nothing?
