vbulletin hacks and member licensing...

i plan also to make a forum on my site where i will discuss several issues with other licensed vb members.
what i want to do is this:
- moderate the users access on that forum and grant them permission only if they posted in licensed restricted areas here, at vb.org.

however, i was wondering if the administration will allow me to implement a license check like it is here...
let me know if that would be possible. in this way it will be alot easier to moderate the forum.

TECK 09-13-2002 12:29 AM

i could make a open thread here in a area that is protected and viewed only by licensed users. so in this way, if someone posts in the thread, then i know he(she)'s a license holder.
please let me know where is the most apropriate place. is the lounge protected to unlicensed users?

I have asked this before. I would suggest asking John about this. The only problem with it is that it might cause a security break in the system enabling you to get unlimited licenses.. while we all know you would not do this if someone hacked your site and got it that would be very bad.

But I am sure you can talk to john@vbulletin.com about it ;)

Tell me how it goes.

TECK 09-13-2002 06:46 AM

i think i'll just stick with the thread idea then.. alot easier. :)

now, may i have the permission to open a thread in Requests with the content:
"If you requested access to TeckWizards.com vBulletin Modifications, please post here to confirm you are a VB licensed user."?
i plan of charging certain fees for installations, etc. and i want to make sure i deal only with licensed users.

Unlicenced users can post in the lounge. I would doubt very much vB would allow this for privacy reasons, the same as we can't see who is licenced here or not without a Mod telling us. The thread idea seems best, but not fool proof.

TECK one possible suggestion is that you can further confirm (though it isn't absolutely) that they're license by making sure tha they have the latest version of vb2.2.7 and also that they can download the hacks for you... in a moments instance you can give them a link to any hack and tell them to download it... and if they can't access that page? well then you will have your answer... simply request that the user go to any hack link and view that post... (knowing that only licensed users can access them) therefore if they seem to not know what the post is about or says then you will get your answer... just a suggestion from me... regards...

@g-force - Why 2.2.7?

By your own definition, that would mean I wasnt a Liscenced member, just because I use 2.2.6...;) You cant distinguish by what vB version they run;)

Also - Non-liscenced users can view threads, just not download hacks...Try finding your own username whilst logged off, and viewing your threads;) - Granted : You would have to register again;)

i'm not gonna post any hacks to my site. :)
the place for hacks is at vb.org.
but if some people will want me to customize their forums, etc... i want to make sure they are legal license holders. so if they post in the thread where they normally cant if they dont have a license, then they will not have access to the forum. simple...

so it will be like that, when the user tries to access the private forum, it will be granted with the restricted message.. customized to point here at vb.org to the thread. then if he posts there, he's ok and i give him(her) the access.

hellsatan... if they're looking to get a new forum installed why not 2.2.7? why would you go with bugged software? why would you want an old 2.2.1 installed when you can easily download the latest software of 2.2.7 instead or upgrade? regards... just my point of view...

True, but some peoples access may have expired so they don't upgrade, I think Lesane for example was at least not very long ago running 2.2.1 still. I've seen 2.2.6 avaible for warez (and reported it), which is the version many people are sticking with. But I do also see your point, like the pre-sales question not long ago, I've just upgraded to 2.2.1, when 2.2.7 is the latest.

How about Private Messaging on VB.org? Aren't only license users able to use the pm system?

I would say go with vbulletin.com Private Messaging can still be used by people who got access from another person who is registered etc, and the ways just go on.

Right now having vbulletin.com setup this system for you would be the better way.

I spoke with John, we will not allow any sites other than vB's official access to the customers area - this way or another. Your best bet is to do the thread thing, TECK.

Yes, i'm still running 2.2.2 because my members access is expired. But even if i had access then i will not run 2.2.7 simply because of the many modifications. I would wait till vb3.
