Restrict Admin CP vBulletin Options - by Erwin

As you know, the vBulletin Options section of your Admin CP is very important. From there, you can close or open your forums, change the forum name, and basically control the site. You really do not want anyone else mucking around in it, except for yourself.

On the other hand, you may want to let your other Admins have access to the Banning Section, so that they can ban email domains and IP addresses. You don't want to have to do this all by yourself.

This hack will modify the options.php file in a way that only YOU as the original admin can edit and change all the vBulletin options. However, other admins will NOT be able to see or edit any options EXCEPT that they can only ban emails or IP addresses when they go to the vBulletin Options page.

You only have to make 3 changes to the admin/options.php file.

As if you really need one, but someone would request it, so here you go - you as the original admin will see all the vBulletin options and be able to edit them.

The other admins will only see the "Banning Options" section, and can only Ban Emails or IP addresses. Also, they will not be able to modify the banning options - only you can. All they can do is add or remove email domains or IP addresses to be banned.

Yeah, that's where I got it from. He has a list of over 30,000 free email domains all formatted for vB for you to cut and paste! :)

Glad that you find this hack useful. It's good to put those Admins to work, but you don't want them to shut down your board by mistake!

Quick question:

There are two of us that want access to the options and one admin we don't want to have access to this. How can I set it up so us two can still see the options and the other one can't?

Nevermind, I figured it out. I just flipped the code around so if the userid = his then it will not show all the options.

So did I for a while, but I wanted to give the other admins and supermods the ability to ban emails and IPs... I don't want to have to do all that. :) I've had this running for months now, with no problems.

Yes. This only restricts the vB Option section (where you change the name of forum etc.)

Erwin, I would guess that this would work with 2.2.9 (and 2.3.0).

Also, just quickly looking through the admin cp, how would this affect:

Forums & Moderators (add/modify/permissions)
Threads & Posts (all options)
Users (all options), and User Titles, Profile Fields, & Groups (all options)
<skip a few admin options>
Styles
Templates, etc.

I haven't given admin access to mods (yet), but feel that the default /mod panel is severely limited (a mod can't even edit a user's signature), so need to give some more control, but obviously am hesitant to give 'too much' control (and wisely so I think), even though (as we all do) I feel all current moderators can be trusted.

If I read your post above correctly, admins would be able to do everything, and this would *only* limit the first link in the admin cp (options), and restrict admins to what the hack allows. While this si good, it seems a rouge admin could do nearly as much damage to a forum by merely killing the templates, etc.

Just need to be sure this si what I want (overall, even besides your hack).

Is there an updated version of this hack for 3.0.7?

This is a 3 year old hack for vB2. It will not work for vB3 and higher.

Check the vB3 forums to see if there is a hack like this available. (Tip: check the profile of this vB2 hack to see if he ever ported it).

Is it possible to have a hack like this for vB v3.5.4?

Weird, i applied the hack but my supermods can still see the options section.

I read that piece of code "$sqlwhere=" WHERE settinggroupid=17 ";"

I dont have any groupid=17, is that related?

I'm about to install this on 2.2.9, does anyone know if or how I can allow 2 admins to have full access, yet restrict access to the 3rd admin?

I doubt you wil find anyone that still supports vB2.

Is there any special reason that you do not upgrade? I would at least upgrade to the latest 2.x version, there have also been security updates. Even better would be to upgrade to 3.6.x.
