Do I really need VB3?

I have 2.2.7 Installed, it's running like a dream and I've been merrily installing hacks for about a week or so since installing it (you can view what I have installed currently here: http://forum.racesimcentral.com/forum.php )

The thing is... this seems utterly stable, it seems superb. And what possible reason is there to upgrade to V3 when it's out?

The only thing I see from my view is that languages are now not hard coded into the php files and are all templated? If this is true then MAYBE I could make use of that, but I also have to think about how that could take international users AWAY from the English speaking forums more than they already are (we have a big Danish community on our forums as our host is Danish - the Admins are me (English, living USA), 1 South Africa, 1 (more) England and 2 Danish.

We also host forums for a lot of online racing leagues (racing simulations) and I just don't see much point for me in VB3...

Can anyone point anything out which is going to change my mind? (I have taken a look at the running beta forum of VB3 and I see nothing I'm all 'whoopie dood' about...)

Install vB3 as a test board and check it out, theres no harm in that, you may find something that is of real use to you. As for the lanuages, the CP is still hard coded in engish but there forums arn't IIRC.

staying with vb 2.2.7

Chris M 09-08-2002 06:43 PM

Staying with vB 2.2.6...:)

Satan

NTLDR 09-08-2002 06:49 PM

Probably staying with 2.2.7, only just upgraded from 2.2.4 *lol* So unless my style can be converted easily or cheaply I'll be staying with 2.2.7.

DrkFusion 09-08-2002 06:52 PM

I will be using phpbb ;)

DeadMan384AD 09-08-2002 07:47 PM

:ermm:

I'm sticking with 2.2.6 right now, mainly because I'm too lazy to upgrade...
But I plan on upgrading to vb3... I cant wait till it comes out... From what I've seen so far, I wont have to install any hacks! Which is great cause I'll need to spend the time working on the templates...
And that permission system, man it just looks cool... :D

I upgrade almost as soon as a version 2 release appears, and re-install the 50 or so hacks I have running. I can't see much in vB3 for me to start dancing about, and won't be hurrying into installing the 3 series. Where exactly can the beta releases of vB3 be downloaded from?

Tim Wheatley 09-09-2002 05:19 AM

They can't yet unless you are testing for Jelsoft I believe. There's no link for it where I saw anyway.

Thanks for the responses guys. :)

If your not mad keen on vb3 then it's probably best to wait for a "final" release rather than rushing to install the beta versions, like the rest of us no doubt :p:

/me updates to vB3 beta the second he is able.

Threaded view is A&O for my users, I've been waiting for this upgrade since November last year, and we still haven't moved from the old discussion boards on my site because of the lack of threaded view in vB2. *sigh*

Neo 09-10-2002 10:17 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

I am staying with 2.2.6.

Threaded view is quite old-school though, isn't it? I don't like it at all - you have to keep clicking on the past replies to see what is going on in the thread... but I guess people have different tastes. The linear view is one main reason why I went with vB.

How about a Framed-Tree Linear Design? I like the one they have at the SC3000.com Forums.

That's not a bad idea - a fusion of threaded at the top and linear at the bottom... you should suggest that to the vB3 developers.

Couldn't the templates be adapted with 2.2.7 to see a tree view?? I'm sure even stupid old me could do a version of sorts...

DeadMan384AD 09-13-2002 01:25 PM

With a lot of editing and work, yah probably. But why would you want to do that?

Alot of PHP & DB changes would be needed also.

blackice912 09-14-2002 11:08 AM

/me is going to vb3 as soon as it comes out since it has many options that will be really useful with my forums

DeadMan384AD 09-14-2002 06:33 PM

I miss my forums... they're dead at the moment and we're waiting for the new host to contact us so we can set up. :(
We've changed hosts, and owner, and I'm sure me and the other admins will all rush to install the beta version of vB3 the moment it's released!
