HiveMail

On the ever popular site, yaXay.com, I see that there is a new 'hack' out for vBB, called HiveMail. Does anyone know were I can find this for my forum (http://www.zelaron.com/forums)

Secondly this was written by Chen (aka FireFly), he hasn't released this hack and I belive he is not intending to, however he may be selling it.

Birdie501 08-11-2002 09:24 PM

Hey Chen,

how much will it cost? :)

DrkFusion 08-12-2002 01:02 AM

we want hive mail...my budget is 85$ lol..

Omar_2002 08-14-2002 04:39 PM

I'd also be interested, even if it did cost some $$$ ;-)

zachb 08-14-2002 06:59 PM

As would I, I have about $100 right now and I could spend about $75 of it. :D

okrogius 08-14-2002 08:12 PM

I emailed chen about it. Right now he isn't selling it but it is planned as soon as he gets the hivemail website running. Also the plan is to convert it from a vb hack to a standalone application - you will be able to buy the code for your website or have a hosted solution.

NTLDR 11-09-2002 07:02 PM

I think I may have to get this too :D

Its a very impressive system and provided my host will support the email pipe or whatever was needed then when I can afford it I shall be purchasing :D

Chris M 11-09-2002 07:17 PM

I can afford it...I just need my host to check it out, and Chen to sell it;)

Satan

assassingod 11-09-2002 07:21 PM

Can you buy it for me hellsatan :pirate:
;)

I will be buying it, I earn twice as much as an unsupported license each month:)

DrkFusion 11-09-2002 11:35 PM

HellSatan I asked Dan already, he seems to like it alot.

zachb 11-10-2002 11:15 AM

I am definately buying if it still integrates like it does on vB.org. If it doesn't I still may consider it, but probably won't get it right away.

TECK 11-10-2002 12:46 PM

the hivemail site looks alot to me like vbulletin one. :)
also, i recognise the vbulletin template touches onto it... my questions is this:
assuming you offer 2mb/user... that's 200mb/100users 2gig/1000users. going in this proportion, the server will cost you a fortune...

at who hivemail aims exacly in their market strategy?

Dean C 11-10-2002 01:01 PM

I'll only offer 500kb p/user if i had it..

If you were serious about offering a proffesional webmail system you could charge for use of the service to compensate for costs..

- miSt

TECK 11-10-2002 01:06 PM

500k? you can do almost nothing with it... and still will load you big time on the database.
a free email account have 2-10mb with web interface. why would i pay for it? just to have a name? is not worth imo, paying to have a @teckwizards.com email for example.

TECK 11-10-2002 01:11 PM

from what i see, hivemail is a great system for ISP providers and hosts only. not regular users with 500mb-1gig databases.
if you have a board with 10,000 members ur screwed royally, with all the bells and nice graphs the script have.

Chris M 11-10-2002 02:03 PM

I would restrict it to the Paying members only...

@Arunan - Does Dan think it would work?:)

Satan

DrkFusion 11-10-2002 02:58 PM

Yes he does, it look much better then Squirrel Mail rite? lol

Chris M 11-10-2002 03:48 PM

Much;)

You're talking about the extreme - let's not. The very early version of HiveMail has been running here on vBulletin.org for quite a while (at least 3 months), with about 50 active users. Today, the size of the mail database is 8.8MB. Add to that address book, POP3 accounts, message rules, etc. and we'll just round it up to 9MB. That's roughly 200KB per user... in 3 months. Let's multiply that by 20, we'll have 1000 users and 180MB. Another x5, and we got to 5000 users and 1GB. Now, if you have 5000 active users I wouldn't expect you to run on a $5/month shared server with 15 other sites... you'd need something a bit more powerful than that, and usually that comes with lots and lots of space to spare.

Of course, that's without even comparing the program to other solutions out there. Looking at nobody.net you need to pay $60/month for 500 users only, and if you need more? "Contact Us".

I don't know, it makes sense to me... but then again you'd be surprised if it didn't, right? :)

Chris M 11-10-2002 07:10 PM

Very;)

Anybody expecting thousands of users must be on a server to cope with that amount, so it will easily fit!:)

DrkFusion 11-10-2002 07:31 PM

Is the newsletter going to be used? I really want to test out this sucker "again"

the stats you're presenting chen are satisfactory to understand what type of clientele you're aiming at.
thanks for taking the time to explain.

Chris M 11-10-2002 08:59 PM

@Arunan - Newsletter?

Who said anything about a newsletter?

Satan

Erwin 11-10-2002 09:05 PM

Like I've said in the past, running a web-based email service can get server intensive - so don't do it unless you are prepared. :)

Chris M 11-10-2002 09:12 PM

Yeh...

I may only allow those who already can use it to do so;)

Satan

KelteN 11-11-2002 02:44 AM

$180... :(

Too much $ for me :(

But im sure its well worth it. :\

ethank 11-11-2002 06:11 PM

How is the vBulletin integration with this? What are the system requirements?
