Update to Tubedogg's Bump w/o Post (Mods only)

What this does: Allows moderators/admins to bump a thread without adding a new post via the thread's dropdown administrator options list. Unlike the "sticky" option, bumped threads will remain at the top of the forum only until a new post is added.

Works in: vBulletin versions 2.0 through 2.2.6

Changes to original: I've added the following updates --

- Directions and template mods updated to work for versions 2.0 through 2.26. (Original directions were created for a late beta version of vB.)

- After bumping, you're now redirected to forumdisplay. (In the original, you were returned to the original thread, even though no change was made.)

- All instructions and code changes are now in one file. (In the original, you needed to unzip three different documents.)

Background: Kevin (Tubedogg) created this wonderful hack back in March 2001. Since then there have been a few useful and necessary updates courtesy of members such as Arie and ThomasP, but we've had to read through the whole thread to find them.

To simplify things, I've added the changes and compiled the template & postings.php modifications into a single document. That's all I've done -- credit for hack and its updated elements goes to Kevin, Arie and ThomasP. :)

Enjoy!

I know this really sounds stupid, but what is "bumping" and what does it do? I see "bump" all over the place here and still have no idea what it mean or what it does. :)

DestyNova 08-04-2002 11:02 PM

usually *bump* mean to move any thread to first list of forum so that anyone can see it to post, check it out or get their attention.

kira 08-04-2002 11:08 PM

Thanks, DestyNova! Glad you find it useful.

Boofo: To bump is to force a post to the top of the list of threads list by posting something meaningless like, "bumping!" This makes it easier for people to find threads that may have moved out of sight.

This hack allows admins to do this easily and without wasting a post.

Hope this helps!

kira heh, your description of *bump* is far better than mine =\

Austin Dea 08-04-2002 11:26 PM

I don't understand what's different about this and tubedogg's....

edit: Oh wait, it's not. Why didn't you just 'bump' tubedogg's =P..

Boofo 08-04-2002 11:59 PM

Thanks for explaining that to me. I guess I never really paid much attention to it because I usually do a "getnew" instead of going through all of the threads. :) Now it makes sense. I think I'll install this and play around with it. Thanks again. :)

This would work superbly with the lesane store hack - buy a bump :p

LiutGoose 09-04-2002 09:38 PM

Thanks man, realy sweet.

Austin Dea, The difference is that with thisone, only moderators/administrators are allowed to bump, in the previous one the thread starter, the ones who have writen in the thread, the last poster or the first poster were allowed to bump it

Just wondering if there is any way to update the "Last Post" column on the forum summary after a thread has been bumped? Screenshot attached of what I mean.. ;)

The variables that would need updating are:
$forum[lastthread]
$forum[lastpostdate]
$forum[lastposttime]
$forum[lastposter]
showthread.php?s=$session[sessionhash]&goto=lastpost&forumid=$forum[forumid]

Nice hack !

Is that possible with this hack. I mean the thread starter should be able to bump the thread and the number of bumps can be limited from via admin cp for that particular thread starter.

Does this hack work perfectly fine on ver 2.3.0 ??

Thanks much, if any one can help with this.

Cheers
