What FTP client you use?

I plan on purchasing SecureFX, since my host use SSH.
I was wondering what FTP client you use? Any advices? Thanks.

Admin 06-09-2002 06:02 PM

I use Flash FXP or CuteFTP Pro, depends on my mood.

I never really favored the "secure" clients, it seems to me they are slower, and don't make a real difference unless you have a top-secret-important-US-g0berm3nt site.

I use WS_FTP Pro. I installed SmartFTP and played with it a little, but I'm used to WS_FTP. :)

Same here, either FlashFXP or the Command Prompt ftp program, depending on which on is avalible.

smartftp is good... but i found that cuteftp pro was the best for me because i could edit my files without downloading them... it wuz very simple too... however i cant get a free working version for it :(

FleaBag 06-09-2002 08:17 PM

www.leapware.com - A very nice and sleek client. Only feature it lacks that annoys me is the lack of manual command input, making DELE .htaccess impossible! :(

filburt1 06-09-2002 08:29 PM

SmartFTP all the way, free and fast :)

Lesane 06-09-2002 08:41 PM

WS_FTP Pro

SaintDog 06-09-2002 09:30 PM

CuteFTP hands down :)

flash fxp is the best

TECK 06-09-2002 09:40 PM

i just tried flashFXP. looks really good. however in transfers is extremly slow comparing to SecureFX, with SSH mode on. is wierd. what i like on flashFXP is the way you dispose your folder files etc.. really good advice. thanks. but what do i do with the transfers? when i upload 32 files to the server, is really slow. secureFX is done way before that.

i used secureFX because my host recommended this one.. i have no idea why. i guess it has to do with the fact they have enabled SSH connections? i also cannot telnet, to make a backup for example without a SSH client. so i;m forced in a way to use this kind of software.

Xelation 06-09-2002 10:09 PM

CuteFTP Pro

apfeifer 06-09-2002 10:12 PM

I currently use WS FTP Pro, but I'm wondering if any of these other ones have a 'keep-alive' type function. Where it sends something to the server so you don't get disconnected if you sit there for 300 seconds and not doing anything. When I'm working on something, I don't always upload every 300 seconds and this gets annoying having to reconnect every time.

TECK 06-09-2002 10:28 PM

flashFXP and secureFX do have a keep alive.

flash is alot nicer in design. but is extremly slow. i'm used to send alot of small files, 10-15k each and flash is really slow dissapointed because i really love it. ont he other hand, secureFX flies but it desnt have a good looking interface like flashFXP.

grog6 06-09-2002 10:57 PM

i use FTP expert v1.0

I had tested the v2.0 a few months ago but not satisfied :-/

Boofo 06-09-2002 11:06 PM

I have you all beat. I use Windows Commander 5.0. It has the keep alive built in also and it is what I use for my file manager anyway, so the theme and options stay the same. It looks the same while doing FTP as it does while file managing. Great program! :)

(It is like the old Norton Commander (for those of you that remember) with 2 windows side by side.)

I don't use FTP generally. I just ssh into my server and use sz/rz for file uploading and downloading. If I need to access someone else's ftp, I just use ncftp from my server.

scsa20 06-10-2002 05:47 AM

I use either SmartFTP or AceFTP Freeware

steve, i'm curious about your method. you are the first person i heard telling me he doesnt use a ftp client. how is that possible.. can you elaboare on this? thanks. i also use SSH to connect to my server.

Mr. X 06-10-2002 07:33 AM

I use CuteFTP

Logician 06-10-2002 08:13 AM

aceftp is nice.. but I use editplus's FTP feature while working with PHP files..It's integrated, works fine and saves you from using an other FTP program..

Erwin 06-10-2002 10:42 AM

WS-FTP Pro

zachb 06-10-2002 01:18 PM

CuteFTP Pro 1.0. I don't like 2.0 as much. :/

ehjay 06-10-2002 02:27 PM

i just connect via the Terminal in OS X. And if i have to.. i just load up Transmit or Fetch.

Broekie 06-10-2002 02:27 PM

Windows Commander

But when I need to upload a lot of files at once I use LeechFTP (multithreaded ;)) (yep, it's still on the net, just search good enough ;))

Dean C 06-10-2002 06:17 PM

does any1 have a crack that works for cuteftp pro (not that i encourage the illegal use of software of anything ;))

SaintDog 06-10-2002 06:31 PM

I recently upgraded to CuteFTP Pro v2, I honestly can say that I am so used to CuteFTP 4.0, I don't much like it :). I supposed it does have a better interface to it (more organized), but that is about all I can notice....

@Mist: It is not worth pirating, plus, it would be better to buy it or just use one of the 100's of free ones ;)

SaintDog

Boofo 06-10-2002 06:41 PM

I used to use FTP Pro until I got Windows Commander. I have used nothing else for FTP since. All hacks that I have installed (well over 100) have been edited and uploaded in Windows Commander. To me there is nothing faster or easier to use and with as many options you can set as is with this program. It is well worth 10 times the 28 dollars (USD) I paid to register it. Just my 4.5 cents worth (inflation again). :)

BTW: the new vesrion (5.0) is multi-threaded, also. :)

When I log into my Linux server with ssh, I simply use the command 'sz' to download and 'rx' to upload files. I have no need for ftp to manage my site at all. I do everything from the shell (except for the Admin CP of course.) This includes zip and unzipping files ('zip', 'unzip') and all text editing ('pico').

I do occasionally need to access someone else's ftp server to help them out with a problem fronm the vB Support System. In thats case I use the ncftp client that's on my Linux server.

We don't support nor discuss warez here.

Dean C 06-11-2002 06:36 PM

lol it was worth a try ... but still the reason i loved cuteftp was beacause u cud edit the php files thru the ftp without having to do the downloadind, editing and uploading... it was simple and easy....

are there any other free ftp's where u can do that?

Boofo 06-11-2002 06:56 PM

Last night, I picked up the slickest little program I have ever seen. It's called Ultra Edit and it is a programmers dream. I just got through editing about 5 php files on my site all in Ultra edit through it's FTP option. It has the tag option so you can load all of the files at once in Ultra edit and switch the tabs bewteen them. And when you save the files, it uploads them back to the site automatically. It has code syntaxing, a functions list and a whole you-know-what load of options and stuff I will probably never get all figured out. If you've never seen or heard of it, you have got to check it out. If you have, then you know what I am talking about. They just released version 9.10 which now has unlimited file size and all sorts of new stuff. The FTP part if it is slick! This is one of those do-it-all programs. :)

I use SecureFX, as well as SecureCRT for my SSH needs. Both great pieces of software!

Putty works for me

Dean C 06-12-2002 06:08 PM

where can u get ultra-edit from?? :D

Boofo 06-12-2002 06:40 PM

Thanks to Chen, he steered me to an editor that is even better than Ultra Edit. It is called Edit Plus 2 and you can get it at:

Edit Plus 2

If you still want Ultra edit, let me know and I can give you the URL for that, too. But, trust me, you won't want it after you check Edit Plus out. :)
