Does Burning Board Copy vB?

Look at a Burning Board like the one here: http://forum.starcraft-2.com/main.php

It looks very, very much like a vB. In fact, I thought it was a vB at first glance. It has the same Welcome Panel thing, the same Mod Drop Down list, basically the same welcome text, same forum leaders page, a lot of the text elsewhere is also the same, etc.... Is that... legal for Burning Board to copy vB so closely like that?

Scott MacVicar 04-14-2002 12:59 PM

Yep its legal and this has already been discussed in great deal on vB.com in the chit chat forums.

Though I wasn't aware that they had started copying hacks as well now.

DjSap 04-14-2002 01:02 PM

there are like 100diffrent scripts that use the same layout, heh i wonder who came up with layout idea, he or she must be pissed as hell cuz everybody rips em off.

DjSap 04-14-2002 01:03 PM

plus all the diffrent scripts copy the new features off eachother, but hey it just contributes to better message board systems.

Copying our hacks is new to me as well... but it's not free anymore, right? WBB that is.

Scott MacVicar 04-14-2002 02:34 PM

WBB 2.0 is gonna cost but there was a big arguement so it might not but I'm sure it will. I wonder if they will undercut vB?

Admin 04-14-2002 02:40 PM

I believe they will, it's good and all while it's free but I really don't think people will rather buy WBB over vB for only $10 (or whatever). Maybe they'll have a good user base at Germany though...

(BTW Scott your signature looks awful in the green style)

CeleronXL 04-14-2002 03:44 PM

Yeah, it does.... The only way to do it and make it look universally good is to uncolorize everything.... A color that looks good in one style almost definetly won't look good in the others because the color scheme is opposite..... Anyway.....

I don't see how WBB could do very well with pay boards. They really aren't that famous like vB and many people who happen to stumble upon their site would probably be those who couldn't pay....

Scott MacVicar 04-14-2002 03:58 PM

I would change it but i forgot the replacement for the font colour it was {fontcolour} or something bah tell me ;)

CeleronXL 04-14-2002 04:04 PM

Are we still able to use those replacements here?

I use {genininfo}.

SyS-Is-DowN 04-14-2002 06:42 PM

i managed to install wbb, it has the same interface, but it has much less options then vb has, it's more buggy, but it also have some features that vb dosent have, you may try www.wbbhacks.com and see that thier hacking community is big aswell, and smart though.

so if wbb changes to where you have to purhcase I wonder if they will profive support for warez forums, that will be interesting to watch cause I could have more fun :smoke:

Neo 04-15-2002 03:27 AM

I am sure this will be popular in Germany like firefly said, and I alwasy knew that someone would create a like vb and give it for much less.

DjSap 04-15-2002 04:33 AM

theoreticly, why can't you patent features that vb has?

Neo 04-15-2002 05:32 AM

To many people use it already. It has to be something original the no one has used / created before :) I have looked into it in some detail.

indiamike 04-15-2002 08:51 AM

I looked at the board and am amazed by how much it looks the same. I am also amazed at seeing there member list and how many of their members/moderators/administrators are on this forum asking how to questions. Though nothing wrong with that, but it must suck to be a hacker and have your work that you create for this community altered and show up on another forum.

But I did a search for vbulletin and my favorite quote is

Yeah, although my contempt for the Jelsoft guys grows daily, they do have a decent product.
