OK how would one go about this,

as having two forums (of course both are payed for) --duh!!
and the same usernames and passwords, and profiles, and such like that, on both forums??

If you can't answer this on the board, could someone pm,

THanks!

Scott MacVicar 01-25-2002 07:39 AM

as users could have the same username, this would be quite difficult, one of them would need to change. If you were sure that there was no two identical usernames in each of the databases then it wouldn't be that hard, you'd have to issue one of the databases with completely new userid's which would involve editing every row in nearly all the tables, once you had done that then you'd have to give the thread and post tables completely different ID's and then you could merge the two forums.

Psychdrone 01-25-2002 07:36 PM

er....OK i kinda understand about how you would assighn the same ids to the users and user profiles? I think!

Is it alright to install to test boards, to try this out, as long as the public dosn't have acces to them???

And pnn if you have any exratime on your hands would youmind explaing a little more:)

thanks!

(basicaly I would want to forums, but everytime you post at one. it rasise your post count for both?

Scott MacVicar 01-25-2002 08:16 PM

i thought you meant merging two existing forums together to form one, i think you meant is two forums sharing the same user table?

Psychdrone 01-26-2002 11:17 PM

YES YES there ya go Pnn,

Ok all, I would want, is the post count to be the same at both boards?? How would I do this?

and would it be ok, to install 2 private test boards?

JamesUS 01-27-2002 07:18 AM

Yes you can install 2 testboards. I personally have 2 testboards for each version, which means I have loads of boards installed ;)

If you are starting from an empty forum and want it to share the user database with another board, that isn't particularly difficult to acheive. Basically you need to go through each file that deals with users on one of the forums (ie member.php, usercp.php, global.php, sessions.php, etc) and adjust the queries to the database so that they query the other forum's user table rather than it's own user table.

Psychdrone 01-27-2002 09:51 PM

Thanks buddy James for letting me know!

but um oh I am alittle confused, how would one go about changing the queries? hmm I think I would just want it for the post count

right cause if more was the same at two different boards, then there would be no point in having two forums;)

Thanks for your help

Psychdrone 02-04-2002 01:08 AM

eh?

JamesUS 02-05-2002 03:18 PM

By postcounts I presume you mean the other user information (profiles etc) as well?

Psychdrone 02-05-2002 10:50 PM

hmm I was aiming for post count only, but I guess that would be inpossible, as it would need the same member profiles, so err I guess I would be going with profiles.....

JamesUS 02-06-2002 02:35 PM

Well that means you need to do what I posted about the first time :) It's not very difficult, but you'd either need to do it yourself or find someone else to do it for you.

mike199m 02-06-2002 05:51 PM

Hey Psychdrone,
If you need help with merging your boards let me know.

Psychdrone 02-06-2002 09:36 PM

could you give me an example, of what I would change the quiers to?

Thanks James:)

Marshalus 02-09-2002 04:47 PM

I want to merge two forums together also. But the thing is, one of the forums is running 2.2.1, and the other is running a beta version of vB2. I'm merging sites, and that webmaster will ONLY merge if I can move all of his users to my forums.

Will the encrypted passwords in 2.2.1 be a problem if I simply move the user tables?

Psychdrone 02-09-2002 07:43 PM

James buddy ol pal:) or mike199m, if one of you guys could set me on the right path, that would be greaaat:)

or maybe you should write a FAQ, on how to do this and put it up over at VB.com or here, when you can, just a thought

Thanks!

I am in the same situation. I already have a forum that has alot of data in it. I am now adding a new board and I only want to share the user information. I want to be able to register on one board and have the ability to post on both. I also want their post counts and total member count to carry over. Over time, i will likely add more boards that will need to share, but right now, it will be just 2. Any help appreciated!!!!
