Do forums need a portal?

Hi everyone,

I moved my forum into a sub folder like this /forums/ and replaced homepage with a portal where contains blocks, mix of content from blog and forums. Do you think nowadays, forums should change to a portal, instead of using traditional forum layout?

Thanks in advanced.

I think it depends on the purpose of the forum.

Can you share more details on this?

When needs a portal when its not?

That's a long and detailed discussion. Is the purpose of the forum to support the sale of goods or the sale of services? Is the purpose of the forum to engender a community specific to a niche? Is the purpose of the forum no specific purpose, i.e. an off-topic discussion environment?

I think if your forum is a support tool for products, goods, or services you should consider a portal as it allows for access to a website or multiple websites, a forum, an intranet, the internet, third party URLs that may be pertinent or useful, and more.

I think if the main purpose is the forum itself adding a portal is information overload and a distraction to the content.

Obviously, these are my opinions and not necessarily the opinions of others.

As an example, one of the sites I webmaster is specific to one team in one sport. Another is sports general with more than 300 team and individual sports groups. Having a portal for a one niche forum seems like overkill. Having one for a 300 team forum seems like a good idea.

Probably the best way to approach the question is: What would I want to see as a regular user of the forums? Which makes it easier for me to find the information I am seeking?

The best way in this case is, you should find a coder on vB community to do it for you. That can cost a bit but you will have a great portal as your requirement or you like.

Why you don't use something like wordpress, joomla or other in front of your forum?

vBulletin 5 is a CMS. You can do anything with it that can be done with WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal.

Its an option but the read about this, with wp for example, is fully integrated? Only I need a cms for index with articles, like the old vbadvanced, articles pointed to one subforum in the forum.

VB 5.0 I can't use because, in my vb 4.2.5 I have some plugins that aren't compatible with vb 5...

Regards.

Because users must login 2 times on your website, you need 2 databases, ... what is also need 2 times. So, it is not convenient to have WP as your portal unless you can not have a CMS for your forum.

that depend what you want to do, if it's just a presentation of your forum or something like that no need to login.
But if you want to put last post... yes you will have a login problem.
I saw a plugin in wordpress that communicate with vbulletin, i'll try to find it and will share here.

To write such a thing, you've never used WordPress.

I use WordPress now. WordPress doesn't do much of anything without plugins.

I think it was for old Wordpress version hence it can have issues with the latest version of vB or WP.
