I am going to have to say you are doing something wrong on your 3.8 board. I have the linked addon working fine on my 3.8 board. Some custom pages on addons the create pages may not show navbar in avatar unless you edit the proper php file.

All set wmyerii, avatar in navbar added to both your styles.
The style you are using is a child style to your default style and should have picked up the edits made to the default style navbar template but, it did not. Had to edit child style as well.
Glad I was able to help.
