Gone for good?

since it is a timeout, might be getting hit with a DDoS attack, or just having server issues.

Paul M 01-06-2016 09:48 PM

Looks like the server is offline.

setishock 01-11-2016 09:23 PM

It says my forum's down also. That bogus as mine's up right now.

You could be blocking the robot, or the IP's of the service. ;)

<a href="http://www.vbadvanced.com/" target="_blank">http://www.vbadvanced.com/</a> vBadvance.com website is still down...

I know Brian had announced in 2014 that vBadvanced products including CMPS are EOL and no longer supported but I thought he would keep the website up and running so people still running vB3 and vB4 could continue to use vBadvanced. I've been trying to access the website over the last few days with no luck and judging by others experiences in this thread it has been for some time now.... anyone know why it went down and if it will be coming back online? I have a feeling it won't.

Also, I have a paid license for vBadvance CMPS. Is there anywhere I can download the latest version for my vB4 forum? I'd like to have it on hand. If anyone has contact with Brian and could help it would be greatly appreciated!

Since he still owns the domain (Expiration Date: 18-oct-2017) but it is not in DNS, I assume he let his hosting expire.

Nope, sorry. You can try reaching out to him though: VBADVANCED.COM@domainsbyproxy.com

BirdOPrey5 01-27-2016 09:40 AM

I thought the CMPS was only a free product. It was the other products that were paid?

blind-eddie 01-27-2016 10:24 AM

You are correct Joe.

There was a Paid version as well, at one time, but I think Brian dropped it prior to v4 being released.

too_cool_3 01-27-2016 04:57 PM

Thanks guys, I sent an email to VBADVANCED.COM@domainsbyproxy.com and will update back here if/when he responds.

I'd just like to be able to upgrade to the latest version of CMPS since it's EOL. If anyone else can contact with Brian or hears from him, please let him know we miss his website and a lot of people still use CMPS and his other products!

He shows to have been online here at vb.org this month (Developer Last Online: Jan 2016). I would hope he would see this thread and respond to it. I don't want to post his username to try and help keep him from being spammed by people looking for his products, and since he has not posted anywhere recently, I would only assume he does not wish to respond

vbacmps has been free for as long as I have been around, starting back on 3.5.

Yes, it was always free, but there used to be an optional paid version as well.

I'm on now downloading 4.3.0 for all my clients with CMPS. Everyone else who is running older versions below 4.3.0 i.e. many of you still use 4.2.1 should login and download now the most current version if you wish to run this for as long as possible (and within reason, meaning if it becomes insecure then do not use it further).

If some of you are not sure about continuing use of vBA CMPS, this is also a free alternative and can be customized further when required: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=250202

This is great news! Thanks GHRake, I just noticed it today. A big thanks to Brian for resurrecting his awesome work!

Those running up to 3.8.9 can only use vba 3.2.3 correct?

exportforce 07-10-2016 11:09 AM

Now there is a Database Error :(

Paul M 07-10-2016 11:22 AM

Seems fine to me (Assuming you mean the vba site).

Yay it's back.
The last ~8 hours it was off.

Maybe someone can explain why anyone would still be using this product. It hasn't been updated or supported in almost two years. It functions on software versions that have long since been deprecated. vBulletin 3.6.0? PHP 4.0.6? MySQL 3.23?

What happens to all of the sites using it when it's no longer compatible?

Paul M 07-10-2016 02:49 PM

Unless I missed something, it functions on 3.8 & 4.2.

I'm sure it does, as do many mods but what happens when it doesn't?

The reason I bring this up is because it seems there's a growing train of vB4.x mods which were once hugely popular but are now entirely unsupported. Some of those have caused major issues with sites (cough, vBSEO, cough) when they ceased to function.

Ironically, vB5 does the same things vBAdvanced does and more but even that wouldn't be a simple upgrade. I've stepped away from modifications entirely. I'm more curious as to why so many sites haven't.

Functionality, of course. Imagine if wordpress owners steered clear of plugins, the internet literally wouldn't be the same lol. Get yourself a developer either in-house, on retainer or available for freelancing when need be (depending on your budget) and don't hold back on functionality!

Here's my take on "functionality" based upon my own personal experience:

If members never know a feature or function exists then they make do without it.

If members are given a feature or function and then it's taken away they whine like six year old girls who have been told they cannot have any pudding if they don't eat their meat.

I realize different solutions work for everyone but mine is to code HTML5 / CSS3 pages by hand so they are up to current standards and not reliant on any third party maintaining a modification or add-on. To me it seems like a lot less work than dealing with third party plugins that stop working, especially when many are no longer maintained and not marked reusable code. In many cases the developers are no longer active.

Your problem strictly relies on you not having a development background or someone on your team with one. If that weren't the case, you'd be able to have your cake and eat it too (or the pudding as you mentioned ;) )

Actually, I have a development background in HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, etc.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a "problem" to not use a heavily modified version of the software.

In truth, I have seen very few sites that actually needed any modification to function.

Content, and accessibility of that content are really all that is required.

I used this mod on sites years ago when it was "state of the art" but that time has long since passed.

It appears to be up again. I got a database error before.
