Windows 8 here but I use software to bring back the start button and to hide that metro crap.
Still too lazy to upgrade to 8.1.

CarpCharacin 01-31-2015 06:12 PM

I use 8.1. Once 10 is released, i will upgrade. 10 is coming out in april. It is going to be a free upgrade from windows 8, 8.1 and 7. Windows 10 will have the start menu back :D

TheAdminMarket 01-31-2015 06:23 PM

I stoped using them last April and still missing them :(

Paul M 01-31-2015 09:09 PM

Up until last year.

I didnt actually decide not to use it, I had dual boot XP/W7, but my XP drive crashed and died, so I switched to W7, but installed classic shell to keep the XP feel.

CarpCharacin 01-31-2015 11:56 PM

I used windows xp until 2011. Then i started using windows 7. In 2013 i switched to windows 8 and in 2014 i switched to 8.1. I plan to switch to windows 10 once it comes out.

I only used XP for my tube bending software until I recently upgraded hardware and couldn't get 3D drivers for the new video card. I bumped up to Windows 7 for that reason only. That's really the only reason I run Windows at all. I use Linux for everything else.

I heard rumours that Microsoft finally found someone who liked it, I guess that was you.

kh99 02-01-2015 05:55 PM

I used XP right up until something I needed wouldn't work (which happened a couple years ago). I have one old computer that still uses xp, partly because there's no reason to pay to upgrade it.

HM666 02-02-2015 02:57 AM

I would actually prefer to run Ubuntu on my Laptop I like it much better but I cannot run Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, & Illustrator on it without Wine and its just not the same in Wine even thought its workable. And forget Lightroom 5 on Ubuntu all together. :( I need all programs in my work so I cannot completely switch to a Linux machine being a designer. Plus there was a bug that had a problem with getting connected via WIFI and since I'm on a laptop I kinda need WIFI. So I'm stuck with Windoze 7. I refuse to use Windows 8 its a POS IMO. My sister has it on her Laptop and i cannot stand it. I hate having to fix anything on her machine. I doubt I'll install any new Windows platform either.

CarpCharacin 02-02-2015 03:19 AM

I tried ubuntu and it was the POS IMO. I am using windows 8 and i luuuuuuuvvvvvvvvvvvv it.

CAG CheechDogg 02-02-2015 03:45 PM

I still have XP on my old gateway lol and I am not changing anything on it it runs just fine ... On this laptop I have W7 Home Premium and I have no problems either ... No way I move from these 2 anytime soon ...

It depends on what version he tried. I loved ubuntu 10.04. I tried 11 with unity, absolutely hated it and stuck with 10.04 until 12.04 came out. Switched to 12.04 and it was nice but my machine slowed to a crawl, switched to Mint and never looked back.

Any Linux distro is a learning curve that not many windows users are able to conquer. Its much different so its not a surprise that more people do not use it. For a lot of people using a terminal really freaks them out. I do not know why but it does. There are lots of great online tutorials and stuff to learn how to use the OS but this all depends on what kind of time you have too. Windows is more user friendly for a lot of people but Linux is less likely to have issues with virus' & malware stuff.

True there are some versions that just seem to be more buggy than others with Ubuntu. I installed Mint like once but had some issues with it. This was years ago though when it first came out. Might look into it again though. I've also used Fedora, which was not too bad, but I like Ubuntu better though.

Replicant 02-02-2015 08:25 PM

Linux Mint is solid. I rarely have an issue. It just works. They have several different distributions to satisfy the majority of users. The best part of Mint is, they listen to feedback from the users and address the bugs and or feature requests in a timely manner. They also have long term support releases for production environments. I installed Mint on my mothers PC and she didn't know the difference until she tried to install her favorite Windows game, otherwise she would still be using it.

LOL bet that was a surprise! I just downloaded and burned the latest Mint 17.1 I think it was. Gonna give it a go in a few days probably and see. Found that I can finally use Lightroom with Wine so i might be able to switch YAY!

I hate the color scheme of ubuntu. It would be hard for me to use it for 5 min without throwing up...

That's because you're used to the Windows "bland" color scheme. They aren't very hard to cahnge. You might want to take 15 minutes.......

CarpCharacin 02-02-2015 11:36 PM

I use a dark green color scheme with fish as my desktop background. I do not like the Hell Red color of ubuntu.

I've not seen it, but now I wanna install it just so I can. Post up a screenshot of your Dark Green theme, I can't visualize it behind the purple and pink tiles.......:p

Its pretty easy to customize you know. Actually its easier to customize than Windoze anything is at least if you are using the Gnome desktop. I have not really used any other desktop except KDE. You can completely change all the colors to what ever you want in ANY Linux distro. You installed it, looked around for 10 minutes realized you could not run WOW on it easily or install it with an exe file and uninstalled it. You did not give it a chance at all so you really cannot say that you would not like it since you actually really DO NOT KNOW since you did not try.

LOL I almost snorted my Dr. Pepper.

CarpCharacin 02-03-2015 01:36 AM

I have tried. I finished my new basic PC and installed ubuntu. I used it for bout 5 minutes and almost threw up. the next day i wiped the drive and installed windows. How would it be easier to customize if i had a gnome as my desktop background:D?

HM666 02-03-2015 02:25 AM

Gnome is not a background. Its a desktop environment. Linux (unlike windows) gives you several options as to how you want your desktop to be laid out, look, what links you want, if you want icons, if you do not want them, if you want menus, if you do not, what kind of menus etc. Its an entire desktop not just a background. The background is just an image file and you can get that ANYWHERE and put any background on any OS desktop. So you can completely customize your PC environment and set it up exactly how you want with what you want.

CarpCharacin 02-03-2015 02:57 AM

maybe windows core and windows programs is what i want. Maybe i do not want some gnome.
