Purchase older version of vBulletin
 

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if it is possible to purchase an older stable version of vBulletin to start a new forum. I was thinking at a stable version of vB such as 3.8.7

What would be your advise ? If it is possible should I do it this way or stick with the latest vB 5 Connect

The reason I intend to do so is because of the multitude of mods available for 3.7 or 3.8 versions

Moved to pre-sales questions. Anyway, you can only buy a vb5 license from vbulletin.com, but it will allow you to use any older version that you care to use. I don't think you'd want to start a new forum using anything except the latest of each major version. Most of the vb3 mods will work for the latest version (Edit: of vb3) even if they are in the 3.7 mod forum.

You would need to purchase vB5. This will allow you access to vB4 and vB3 versions to use.

But TBH, I would go with v4.2.2 on a new site vs vB3.8

Also remember, because you have access to all three versions does not mean you can run one of each, you still can only run one site per license. :)

I had no idea that those from v3 would work on v5. That's good to know.


I appreciate your input. Is there something in particular with 4.2.2 ? I just need a stable version that will give me and my users a hassle free experience. Yes I know I can run only 1 site per license.

They won't. I'm sorry I wasn't clear. What I meant was that most mods that are in the vb3.7 forum will work with vb3.8. But in general mods will only work with the major version they were written for. So you're right, if you want to create a forum and use vb3 mods you need to use vb3, but you should use the latest vb3 version of vbulletin available.

Yeah 4.2.2 pl2 is stable, and their is plenty of mods out there for it. :)

Do you think I should go with a VPS or a dedicated server for start ?

Is it easy to completely move without any errors from VPS to a dedicated setup (maybe also switch the hosting company) later ?

I would start with a VPS, no need for a dedicated at this time. The switch should be easy as long as the host knows what they are doing when switching your site. :)

The average VPS should be able to handle a lot of users, once you get thousands of visitors at the same time you will be wanting to use a dedicated server.

Now I'll have to seek for some hosting since it's been a while since I did this and now I see all kind of options such as regular vps, cloud vps and so on :)

If you tell us where you want the VPS to be located at, we might be able to help you finding a host.

I would like to be located in Sweden.

vB4.2.3 beta is your best bet now

I believe https://www.bahnhof.net/ is one of the big guys in Sweden.

IF and I mean IF you're not going to heavily customize the site and IF you're not adding in tons of modifications you could go w/ vB5 on their cloud hosting - if you're an inexperienced webmaster or new forum owner then perhaps that will save you time and frustration. On the other hand most I see who have experience and go to the cloud usually move their site to a new host within a few weeks if not months - its not for everyone however it can save a few folks grey hairs if their not thinking outside the box in regards to their forum.
