2 domains for the same forum

hi to all
i want to put 2 domain for the same forum.
can someone help me how to do this?

Zachery 11-26-2014 05:09 PM

Not a good idea. It'll be bad for your search engine rankings, plus a nightmare with cookies.

Why is it bad for search engine rankings and how is it a nightmare with cookies? I have 4 domains for my forums and I don't have neither of those problems ... he asked for help not your opinion ... Now you might take my questions a bit personal but all he asked for was help on how to do something ....

Anyways ... add the following to your .htaccess file and in your cPanel put your domains as parked domains and you are set ...

All you are doing here is redirecting your other domain to the forums and it has nothing to do with cookies at all and it "will not" affect your site ...

Example, this is the direct link to my clan's forums: https://www.cagclan.com/community/forum.php

This is the 2nd domain which is just redirected to the forums: www.clansrus.com ...

Try it

Code:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomain\.com$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.yourdomain\.com$
RewriteRule ^/?$ "http\:\/\/yourdomain\.com\/forum-path\/" [R=301,L]

See, that isn't having multiple domains for the same forum though. That is using a redirect. You fcan actually setup a site/vbulletin to be accessible from multiple domains without redirecting, and that is generally bad mojo.

CAG CheechDogg 11-26-2014 05:30 PM

Ok ... I understand what you are saying... but he did ask for 2 domains for his forums .. I gave him one option he can use and again explain why now that is "bad mojo" ....

My point here is that he asked for help not for your opinion Zachery .. why not just show him how to do it?

You will end up with a mess of different stuff from different members on your forums. It would cause more problems that way.

Not true ... if you only use a re-direct you don't even mess with cookies or the login system as it only re-directs the parked domain to the forum's path ...

I have had my website/forums with 4 different domains all pointing to my site and I have never had any problems ... so like I asked Zachary I will ask you ... explain why don't just give your opinion on things if you don't explain why it is so...

That's true, I didn't think about that. But knowing how some people are they will complain about the re-direct "Why you do this?" "Why didn't warn us ahead of time before doing this?".

Yeerp I hear yah...but if he only wants 2 domains for his forums which is what I have and what I assume he is asking for then that is the best solution for what his initial question is.....

And again, a re-direct won't harm anything regarding search engine rankings or cookies at all ...

And this "is" having multiple domains for a forum because 2 different domains get you to the forums ....

I'll have to remember that in the future. Looks like he is asking about that, though.

CAG CheechDogg 11-26-2014 06:15 PM

That is what I got out of the question lol .. if he comes back and says "no I was asking for something else" then someone else might be able to help him with a 2nd option ... but it has worked for me, he asked for help and I gave it to him ...

True, he could have explained it a bit better. But with what he said you usually get what you think sounds like what that member is asking for. :P

ozzy47 11-26-2014 09:47 PM

Me myself I have 10 additional domains that redirect to my main one, a .com one. :)

eazygreek 11-26-2014 10:35 PM

ok guys.i found how to do it.
i just get 2 ips for the same server.
i create e new domain name on parallel plesk and in the new domain website file i create e php file with the default forumpath so if you search for .yourdomain.com you are going to yourdomain2.com

vBNinja 11-26-2014 10:39 PM

He's not asking about redirecting multiple domains to another domain, anyone can do that through a domain manager, htaccess or a simple 301 redirect in the php files. He's asking if each domain can literally be used to navigate through his forum. I've created a mod that does this and takes care of the cookies and SEO, might release it soon. Ill let you know if I do

eazygreek 11-26-2014 10:39 PM

edit:
if someone want to try this better to take backup first
i new domain no need new database
it is work in the same database

I understand what you are saying here as well Ninja ... but with a redirect you don't need to do any of that above and you just simply use a "redirect" ...

Now if Zachery would of explained earlier, that would be 2 different domains with duplicate content which is what "will" mess with your search rankings ... by using a redirect you don't risk getting hit for duplicate content on 2 different ips or domains ...

So what you don't want to do is actually have a php file that or a mod that will do that, integrate both domains to use the same content ...

No because there will only be 1 db and 1 installation of vb

cellarius 11-27-2014 02:43 PM

I'm not so sure.

When redirecting, you clearly only use one domain to access the forum. But he specifically asks to use more than one domain to access it.

Anyway, not my problem. Just wanted to make the OP aware that this might be an issue and he might want to clear that use case with vB support through official channels.

ozzy47 11-27-2014 03:29 PM

I believe for what you want to do, you can use something like this, https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=254197

SaN-DeeP 05-01-2015 06:30 PM

This is an excellent idea to be considered.. and not at all bad for SEO..

check the best implementation here:
https://passport.mobilenations.com (that's 1 single signup/login page) to access all sites visible in header.. I am sure this definitely requires multiple vbulletin licenses.
