upgrading

what is the difference in 3.8.4 and or VBULLETIN 4 OR 5

I am running 3.8.4 but thinking about a upgrade

mokujin 10-09-2014 01:27 PM

Before upgrading, don't forget to backup your database (and files).
Don't think, just upgrade :-D

vB5 is totally different from vB3 or vB4. vB4 is similar to vB3 in the way it works, but you will not be able to use any vB3 styles in vB4 and many modifications will not work in vB4 that you used in vB3 - you will need to upgrade them. None of your styles or any of your modifications will work in vB5.

anyone have vbulletin 5 forum I can go check out

cellarius 10-09-2014 05:06 PM

Do yourself a favor and read a few threads in this very forum about general vB5 experience.

vbulletin.com/forum is running vb5.

There is a demo of the vB5 Connect software here:

There is a demo of the vB4 Publishing Suite here:

There is also Mark B's site, which usually runs the latest development release. If you want to see some of the newest features.

cellarius,
I've still got our main forum on vb4.x and we just set up a new forum using Simple-Press. My vb developer has refused to upgrade us to vb5.x, from your comments just this past week i guess it isn't much better than it was this time last year?
thanks,
bart

TBH I would still stick with vB4 and not go with vB5 yet.

cellarius 10-15-2014 11:30 AM

@webducknj: Your vB dev is a wise man ;)
Since most of the issues vB5 has are not exactly superficial, I personally doubt waiting will do vB5 much good. But maybe IB and vB5 will prove me wrong over time, who knows...

Yoshiburger 10-15-2014 05:58 PM

the people saying negative things about vB5 are not being trolls or otherwise dramatic... vB5 is horrific and is a TOTAL waste of time and money.

you are flat out dumb like i am if you put this thing on a site you care about.

installing the script was a breeze and the initial setup showed sooooo much promise, but the FACT is the code cant handle the most basic of functions, even on vB corporate sites... its why i am psoting here rather than there too... i dont get a reply or new topic button on their site and yes, i AM a valid and validated customer.

the things that are broken are not trivial and worse, are not being delt with by the devs.

if you do not own vB, go buy anything else! if you do sadly own a license, use anything but 5.x

judging by how long its been, 5.x will NEVER be working code.... and i will NEVER upgrade and find out if 6 is better or not.

vB will NEVER get another dime from me.... and even worse for them, they will never get another recommendation to other dev's from me other than like what i just wrote here.

i think their work is actionable, actually.

can i still sell my license or not? even that has been totally obfuscated

Many have installed vb5 and now wish they never did and you can't downgrade to vb4 the only way is a full wipe and a new vb4 install. Some who have vb5 know how to code well and fix most of the problems enough to make it work unless you have the skills don't install it

the skillset required is huge, really, since there are no docs!

BirdOPrey5 10-16-2014 12:07 AM

VB5 licenses can be resold, but contact sales first to confirm your license is eligible and what the transfer fee will be- usually $45 I believe.

TheLastSuperman 10-16-2014 12:08 AM

Yoshi,

I removed the last line from your last post, the one comment was not needed. Now about the license you can sell i.e. transfer it however there are rules/regulations per say about that all of which is contained in the license agreement. The quickest way to determine this would be to open a support ticket and inquire if your license is transferable, if so then you can sell it.

ForceHSS 10-16-2014 12:10 AM

They charge for it? How long is that been in place

Yoshiburger 10-16-2014 12:26 AM

thanks for your replies!

also, good form telling what you edited :D
