You're only looking at possibly some minor template edits, if that. 3.8.8 has changes to the core php files for higher level php compliance than 3.8.7 has, native. This has nothing to do with styles. Load up some of the 3.8.7 styles you like and see if they work - can't do any harm and you can always uninstall them. They should all be perfectly compatible.

What kind of style you want? Just like the ones you linked too? Or just dark like the ones you linked too?

Full width or fixed?

Have you looked in the styles section of this forum?

CompleteVB used to do a dark style similar to the first site you showed
I know they are no longer active on their sales website, so it might be worth searching round the net and see what you can dig up
