I'm seen phpPortal but I just want to know what users feel about this tool.

I like it a lot... and I am using an old beta version.. so some things don't work like my dev sites do.. hehe

TheComputerGuy 10-26-2001 01:34 AM

Brads site is the best...well almost...but a lot of hard work into it

BradC 10-26-2001 04:51 AM

Thanks TheComputerGuy

you know when you get a new toy... you play with it.. till it breaks.. or till it gets old and useless.. well think of playing with php a toy.. and my website my testing grounds :)

until it breaks .... or my new job that is going to have me traveling all over the US.. here in a few months... I will continue to mess it up and try to fix it! :)

My site is simple looking, cause I have no computer artistic talents whatsoever.. lol

Bradc, your site looks good! :)

By the way I notice that the phpportal have the below info on all the entire website. Can this be remove?

I think it would be best, to atleast keep a link back to phpportals.. showing that you are using the software. I am not wajones, but the last time I checked for a small contribution to the cause... ( I know I know ) you could remove the powerd by vbportal.

But personally I would be proud to have it at the bottom.. in the fashion I have it.. :)

My vbp site:

:)

Bane 10-26-2001 11:14 PM

http://www.talkloud.net/ is running it atm. Its quite nice to be sure :)

Zombie 10-27-2001 09:40 AM

It's a nice hack but I'm not going to pay for a hack.

Also, don't plan on upgrading vbulletin once you install it

orca 10-27-2001 09:54 AM

Why not? It usually isn't a real big issue to upgrade if there aren't any big file changes. The same could you say for every other hacks available. You also need to redo them.

Zombie 10-27-2001 10:14 AM

Most hacks don't add or change your database like vbp does.

Bane 10-27-2001 12:03 PM

What difference doest that make to upgrading vb? I've been running vbPortal through the entire 2.x vb series with no problems. I also have at least 2-3 dozen database modifications of my own. There is no difference when upgrading vb.

orca 10-27-2001 02:01 PM

Yes, Stars hack and other popular hacks need a db change.

BradC 10-27-2001 04:06 PM

I am with Bane and orca on this one.

I have ran vbportal since the beginning, I usually do fresh installs, but I also do a check on a demo site to make sure it is upgradeable from the previous version.. and it always works. Also I have so many table alterations and stuff it is not funny, and it seems to make it through all of the upgrades also. So this should not be an issue to have to worry about.

TheHideoutGuy 10-27-2001 07:58 PM

I don't think vbPortal actually modififies any of the vB tables in the database. Yes it adds many of its' own, but then again any portal package will do that; Nuke, PHPNuke, PostNuke, and PHPWebSite just to name a few.

Yeah there are going to be some "re-hacking" required after a vB upgrade but again thats no different than any portal add-on or for that mattar most hacks.

I would wait until wajones tests a vB upgrade with vbPortal and releases upgrade instructions. I'm sure it won't be that difficult! And vbPortal is more than just a news front end. Sure it does news, but also has a nice system for maintaining downloads, links, as well as 2 excellent photo gallery add-ons and some other really cool things. Don't take any of our word for it, visit some sites using vbPortal or any of the other portal add-ons for that matter.

Ashura 10-29-2001 07:26 AM

VBP is good and I use it for my site.

Also with the current 3.0 beta's you see most of us running you can upgrade your VBulletin with little to no hassles. The small price was worth the effort and many of us add back to the community.

Its more of an addon now than a hack. I edited more VB files from things I added off these forums than anything from VBP.
