How do you integrate VB into your website
Im trying to make the forum more like my website |
You can either code it yourself, or get a portal system that relies on vBulletin.
I only know of vbPortal, but there might be more. |
I'm gonna put my vote in for vbPortal!! I'm still integrating it into my site, but the results are outstanding!! If you're looking for a CMS you can't go wrong at all! It has all of the advantages of other CMSs like Nuke but ties in nicely with vB.
Although my site isn't officially open you're welcome to check it out. http://www.shackrats-hideout.com vbPortal can be found here. |
I run vbPortal at http://www.talkloud.net/
|
TheHideout Guy .. that is looking pretty good! :)
I agree, I myself use vbportal and I love it.. I have used it since the beginning.. oh so long ago :) |
I also run vbPortal @ phpPortals :)
|
Is that what you use over there wajones? I've been wondering but could never get up the courage to ask :p
|
:D
Ill give vbportal a try thanks for the feedback folks |
PHPNuke blows that vportal away.
How the hell they can charge for a hack is beyond me. Fonz...don't try vportal...use PHPNuke or Post-Nuke. Vportal is nothing but an overpriced hack. |
yeah vbportals looks a bit of a ripoff
ill see how my sight goes before im a little adventerous i just want more and more people to register though - its hard to advertise a forum with no posts on it but i guess every forum crosses this bridge |
Yup, best bet would be to add a link and description to your sigs in all the forums you post in, add a sig line to your email.
After paying either $85 or $160 for their bulletin software, don't go paying more for a small code modification. |
your right there qwaz
its definately worth the money though vb was a good buy |
I'm happy with the money spent on the bulletin software, and the support that can be found in these forums.
Just not the gaul it takes to charge money for vbportal. |
vbportal sounds good but is a tad expensive for what you get
|
I'm telling you, use PHPNuke.
Check out my website in my sig. The forums look different because I just redid the layout of the main site. But the main site uses PHPnuke. |
ill give it a bash tomorrow
cheers for the tip |
Yeah, I'm pretty impressed that the guys who made VB Portal are charging people for it. Most of the stuff that is included in VB Portal has already been released in the 2.x Release forum.
If you really wanted to, you could learn a little PHP, and script all the stuff yourself in under 2 months. It's not hard to copy+paste VB's coding :) |
The latest release is 2.01 and it still available and free. The one I'm working on right now 3.0 isn't finished and won't be released to the public until it is. I have allowed my contributing members access to the code and they have been helping with beta testing etc. Very few have been sorry. It's going to be (already is) much better than 2.01.
BTW, the cost of membership is not $35, it's a donation system, where the average donation has been $35, so figure it out. This is something that a lot of the vBulletin boards are having to do. A great number of my members have never donated $$$ but some have come back and donated a second and third time, just to help. Anyway, I'm not trying to rip anyone off, just trying to keep it going. |
I could be wrong from visiting your vbNuke Powered Site qwaz, but its hard to get an opinion on it when its not there :p
vbPortal is a nice bit of work, I didnt pay for it at all, and quite honestly I don't want to get into the "wajones is crazy for charging" crap. It's been covered here and covered at phpportals. I am curious if you are a contributing member over there? Or have you "somehow" gotten the software from another source? I can't see someone just shouting out that something is crap without trying it first. Now fonzerelli_79, let me put my extra 2 cents in. vbPortal is a nice front page for a vbulletin site. Yes, you could sit down and hack every part of it together yourself, if you know PHP and MySQL, (which I am assuming you dont, sorry if Im wrong) and it would work *much* better than vbPortal does (or nuke for that matter) because you have *only* what is needed for your site and nothing more. What vbPortal offers is a simple solution to that with a minimum amount of work. You can install nuke, but you will still have to hack it to intergrate it with vb. And if your going to go that far why not try Post-Nuke or PHP Website, both of which last time I checked 0wn3d Nuke in a big way. What it comes down to is it all depends on you and the amount of effort you want to put into doing it. :D Hope this helps :) |
I agree with Bane.. and of course wajones.
It is hard to say something BLOWS.. or sucks.. if you have not tried it... and I mean the latest version. I know people might get frustrated or a little mad cause it is on a donation system. But if you think about the amount of time not only spent on it, but supporting it you can understand that. I have spent my fair share helping people set them up, and answering questions.. so I am not speaking from left or right field.. :) And yes you, me, my dog, can make up something like this.. and if you want just a portal system or a news posting system as your frontpage, shall I even suggest a few hacks in the hacks section that are made just for that... where you can intergrate them into like a frontpage with news, and whatever else your creativeness can conjour up.. yes I also feel that PostNuke and phpWebsite are better than phpnuke, even though nuke is always improving on. I would rather spend my time on other things, like addons and whatever else... instead of spending it on intergrating phpnuke and vb.. that is why I and so many use vbportal. For one, a lot of us have minimal knowledge of php and it would take awhile and a lot of frustrating days/nights to get it to be where vbportal already is. And yes vbportal 2.0.1 is free, and can easily be found. Which works and will do the job that you want. And like wajones said.. you are not PAYING.. and I will repeat that again.. you are not PAYING for vbportal 3.0. You are contributing to the cause, and to the time and money spent not only to create it, but to give it a home and it's own support forums. Everyone is going to have their views on this, and I am not for one going to bad mouth any of them. Nor will I bad mouth any products I myself have not personally used or atleast played with. The first version of vbportal a long time ago.. umm it was called nuke2vb.. had me frustrated to no ends.. but I stuck with it... and I have LEARNED A LOT! from vbportal. I am not spectacular at php, or anything... well besides sleeping.. but wajones and many others have answered questions and helped me get through different things throughout my time with vb and php. So I support vbportal, and wajones fully! But that is just me.. take what you want, leave the rest.. or take nothing at all :) But please don't bad mouth something that you have not played with, or bad mouth it, because of the costs.. |
Putting words into peple's mouths doesn't help your case.
I never said it was crap. I said it was a hack. |
btw, if I knew what I was doing, my page would have been there when I tried to run a query on it.
Sadly, I usually end up ruining things when I try to fix. :p ;) It's there now.:) |
I like your site qwaz and I was not (if you were referring to me) putting words in your mouth or anyones..
those are just two words I have seen associated in posts about vbportal.. so those two stick in the back of my mind.. sorry if that offended ya.. just trying to make a point.. or atleast throwing my 2 cents in :) |
Nah, no offense taken.
If I knew how to code and could make something better, then I might have even the slightest grounds to call someone else's work "crap". But I don't, I rely on everyone else in this community to do all the work for me, as do the others that disparage someone's work. |
Looks nice qwaz :) That a nuke template or you did that one? Did you intergrate that with vb?
And you are right, you never said it was crap, my bad bro. I hope you take no offense at it, just get a little tired of people blasting others work and I guess you caught the brunt end of that :( |
I am learning slowly.. on how to do stuff like this.. and hopefully one day I can actually help wajones more than I do.. by maybe helping make the code more efficient.. or releasing all my addons and stuff that I am farting around with on a daily basis.. hehe
kind of glad I quit MetLife.. I get more work done.. hey I have even caugth myself doing college homework!.. always wondered what the teacher was talking about.. and what was past the cover of those books they gave me :) and.. I agree a lot of people (including me a long time ago) had to rely solely on the vb greats.. like tubedogg, firefly as of lately... freddie, well the developers, moderators.. and anyone who has posted in the vb hacks with their releases (did not want to add a full list of names hehe) I have bought 4 books on php and mysql.. and have learned a lot from them... which is great.. hopefully I can be of more use.. :) |
Don't let Brad fool you guy's, he's already past my abilities. You need patience to be a programmer and I'm getting too old :D Everything said was true, I just hack, but just for the fun of it. But both Bane, Brad and many others have helped me more than I help them.
If vbPortal 3.0 does end up to be good enough to be released it will be because of people like them. |
I wish I could take credit for that template, however it's not my work.
The graphics are mine! If that counts for anything. :) Can't say I blame you for a growing frustration with people insulting something you created. It's only natural. |

thanks wajones for the vote of confidence :) and the kind words... I lack in a lot of things.. graphics is a major one also.. although I am talented freehand, when it comes to computer graphics.. cad.. cvt.. I cannot do it for crap :(
but that is going to be my next challenge after I figure more of this php stuff out.. hehe.. making some cool templates and graphics.. for my site.. and for vbportal and vb :) but! don't hold your breathe.. hehe |
