Improve your URL structure and alleviate duplicate content penalties for your forum with DragonByte SEO, a search engine optimisation mod for vBulletin 3.8.x and vBulletin 4.x.x.

Uses
DragonByte SEO is a complete, modern and fully supported Search Engine Optimisation solution for vBulletin 3.8.x and vBulletin 4.x.x, allowing you to easily eliminate duplicate content penalties from search engines and improve the search engine friendliness of your content URLs via multiple powerful tools.

By giving you total control over how the URLs are presented, DragonByte SEO allows you to customise your site's URL structure should you so choose, or leave the settings at their default values for a "set-it-and-forget-it" experience.

Integrated sitemap builders automatically submit multiple content types to various search engines, ensuring any new URL formats are instantly picked up upon.

Major Features (Lite)

PHP 5.4 Support: By creating DragonByte SEO on PHP 5.4, we've been able to ensure compatibility with this PHP version in the event you or your host decides to upgrade in order to continue to receive bugfix and security updates.

Google Analytics Integration: You can easily integrate Google Analytics with your forum by simply entering your account ID, and choose the level of detail you want to track.

Dynamic Meta Tags: Meta Keywords and Descriptions can become content-aware on certain pages like blogs and threads, increasing the relevance of these pages.

External Link Handling: You can choose to add "nofollow" to all external links, preventing search engine spiders from leaving your site. With the ability to fine-tune where this applies, white- and blacklist support as well as optional anonymisation techniques, you are in complete control over your external references.

Powerful URL Rewrites: Almost every URL found in vBulletin can be rewritten via powerful rewrite rules, enabling you to customise your rule set to perfection. The default rewrite URL settings match that of DragonByte-Tech!

Sitemap Generation: Sitemaps can be automatically created for all supported URLs, and automatically submitted to search engines.

Major Features (Pro)

vBSEO Importer: DragonByte SEO is compatible with vBSEO rewrite rules, and can import your rule set from the latest version of vBSEO seamlessly.

Custom URL Rewrites: Take further control over your forum URLs with the ability to write your own URL formats.

Custom Blog Domain: Run your vBulletin Blog from blog.yourdomain.com (or any other domain you wish).

Custom CMS Domain: Run your vBulletin CMS from cms.yourdomain.com (or any other domain you wish).

Custom Rewrite Rules: If you have custom vBulletin-powered pages, you can create rewrite rules for them using this feature.

Custom Sitemap URLs: Your custom pages can also be added to the sitemap, with individual update frequency / priority / last update date settings.

Custom 301 Redirects: You no longer have to edit your server-side rewrite rules in order to create 301 redirects for your content.

Content-Aware SEO Titles: Blogs, CMS Articles and Threads can generate SEO titles based on the content rather than the title, great for forums with a high number of unhelpful titles.

Advanced Logging: Spider and Sitemap hits can be logged, and the logs can be browsed via the DBSEO AdminCP via the same intuitive interface used in vBulletin's own log browsers.

If you read the first post, it lists all the things that are in the pro version that are not in the lite version. The copyright is also in the pro version too.

If you have absolutely no interest in using the modification (for whatever reason) then perhaps you should shut up and stop flaming the OP's thread? Afterall - DBTech obviously are not going to change their copyright policy. It's also quite clear that a great majority of DBTech mod users are okay with the copyright.

Anyway - Nice share DBTech. Here's wishing you success with both the free and paid versions of your script.

J.

FWIW - The "pro features" list takes up what appears to be only 1/5 the op contents.
The rest is a list of lite version features...

Paul M 02-20-2014 12:57 AM

Unnecessary comments removed.

This is a support thread for a modification release, not a school playground.
If you have nothing better to do than attack peoples work, I suggest you find somewhere else to do it.

NukeET 02-20-2014 01:22 AM

Thanks for this hack... :)

TheLastSuperman 02-20-2014 02:13 AM

Need I remind some that the former heavyweight seo modification is no longer available AND that it had no lite version whatsoever so the fact they offer a lite version at all should do nothing but make you smile.

For those still running vBSEO who need to remove it for security reasons, this should be a perfect replacement. Myself and a few others who know how to tweak a site and use .htaccess mod rewrites will probably not use it BUT for those who do not know what we do its a very easy way to "SEO" your site.

Disco_Dave 02-20-2014 07:54 AM

Hi Guys

Just testing this now, following your read me txt I have placed this into our .htaccess:

PHP Code:

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(****/|dbseocp/|******/|cron|*******|forumrunner|api\.php)
RewriteRule ^((archive/)?(.*\.php(/.*)?))$ dbseo.php [L,QSA]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !/(******|dbseocp|****|clientscript|cpstyles|images)/
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ dbseo.php [L,QSA

Should I rename these items I have *'ered? I'm now getting 404 pages when navigating the site.

Dave

Totally not working on our site.....404's everywhere

M.Iftikhar 02-20-2014 01:20 PM

If you have renamed your AdminCP and ModCP directories they should also be renamed in the .htaccess file, yeah.

Are you sure your web server is .htaccess compatible?

Also, if your forum / CMS / blog are in separate physical directories, issues can arise. For now, that kind of setup is not supported until we can figure out how to make it work.

Any modification can slow down your site, and mods that perform alterations to your content on-the-fly especially so. That being said, our own private tests indicated a 33% reduction in resource consumption from vBSEO. This is not a result all our customers & testers could replicate, so we do not promise or advertise any form of performance gain from vBSEO.

There is no official nginx support due to us lacking testing, but a customer of ours (that runs vB in a subdirectory called /forum/) has allowed us to give these rules out on request:
Code:

location /forum/ {

try_files $uri $uri/ /forum/dbseo.php?$args;

if (-f $request_filename) {
expires 30d;
break;
}

if ($request_filename ~ "\.php$" ) {
rewrite ^(/forum/.*)$ /forum/dbseo.php last;
}

if (!-e $request_filename) {
rewrite ^/forum/(.*)$ /forum/dbseo.php last;
}

}

location ~ /forum/(.*\.php)$ {
rewrite ^/forum/(.*)$ /forum/dbseo.php last;
}

Please note that I have absolutely no idea whether these rules work, or whether they are optimal. We are working behind the scenes on being able to provide official Nginx support, but for the moment this is provided with absolutely no guarantees.

thanks for the great hack,
for some reason my urls are coming up + signs instead of _.
i.e www.domain.com/the+section+name
www.domain.com/the +thread+name,

If I try a different one like - instead of _ it re-writes the domain but it says invalid forum specified.

Why am I getting + signs instead of the _ when setting it up.
thanks

P.S I really am thinking of buying this product and replacing vbseo, as anything that is released by dbtech always stands out and delivers. I want to buy the product but not before I make sure why am I getting + signs instead of _ .

I have all these folders renamed, so it's just a matter of matching these up.

Everything is default. only thing is. Our forum is placed within a folder called forums would this make any difference?

That is really strange, the + sign is not a supported URL separator. I've no idea why that would happen for you.

Can you try disabling all other mods to eliminate the possibility of a URL conflict?

DragonByte SEO is currently not compatible with the "Component URL" scheme in vB4. If, for instance, the CMS is in your root folder (the placeholder files) and your actual forum is in the /forums/ folder, then DBSEO will need to be uploaded to the /forums/ folder and the CMS URLs cannot be rewritten (they will all produce 404).

Does this apply to you?

So if I moved our forums files ie vbulletin into just public_html this mod would work...

DragonByte Tech 02-20-2014 08:55 PM

How is your directory structure laid out just now?

I've seen two possibilities:
1. Your actual vB files are in public_html and the "forum" files from the "do_not_upload" folder were uploaded to your /forums/ folder
2. Your actual vB files are in /forums/ and the "cms" files from the "do_not_upload" folder were uploaded to your public_html

If #1: You should upload DBSEO to public_html and edit the .htaccess file in public_html, and you should empty the "Forum Component URL" setting.
Note that the Lite version will not allow you to restore the "/forums/" prefix to your forum URLs due to not being able to customise your URL formats beyond the default.

If #2: You should upload DBSEO to /forums/ and edit the .htaccess file in /forums/. and you should empty the "CMS Component URL" setting.
Note that the Lite version will not allow you to strip the "/content/" prefix from your CMS URLs due to not being able to customise your URL formats beyond the default.

I have never had this: do_not_upload. uploaded to public_html. Only the upload folder is in the public_html/forums.

I will check this, but we don't use the CMS function, only vbadvanced for our home page

I have the DBSEO folder uploaded to public_html/forums/dbseo. I also noticed that anyone can login to this.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this a bit....

DragonByte Tech 02-20-2014 09:22 PM

You need to upload the full contents of the "upload" folder from the DBSEO zip file, not just the "dbseo" folder.

I have a few mods of yours installed I know where they go ok...The only one I was unsure about is the: dbseocp which is located in: public_html/forums/dbseocp

The rest of the files are all in the correct locations.

DragonByte Tech 02-20-2014 09:31 PM

vBAdvanced is notorious for causing conflicts due to their nonstandard way of initialising their script.

Just to be clear: Are you having 404 errors when browsing /forums/ or just when clicking forum links in vBAdvanced?

Only in the forums.

Every time I place this in the .htaccess:

PHP Code:

RewriteEngine On

# If you are having problem with "None Could Be Negotiated" errors in Apache, uncomment this to turn off MultiViews
# Options -MultiViews

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(*****/|dbseocp/|******/|cron|******|forumrunner|api\.php)
RewriteRule ^((archive/)?(.*\.php(/.*)?))$ dbseo.php [L,QSA]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond
%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !/(******|dbseocp|*******|clientscript|cpstyles|images)/
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ dbseo.php [L,QSA

404's all over, I would like to get this working. But if it's not possible with our forums placed inside a public_html/forums. I'll just give it a miss.

Disco, try adding this.

Code:

# If you are having problems or are using VirtualDocumentRoot, uncomment this line and set it to your forum component directory.
 RewriteBase /forums/

I just changed the forums folder directly into the public_html and everything is working 100% now. After changing all the forum URL'S in the database with replacement variables, and fixing attachments file paths. I'm not sure why the original admin placed all the vb files in a forums folder.

The only problem I'm having now, is. I changed our forum url to: https://nirc.co.uk And now after you login, it sort of doesn't log you in. It doesn't jump to log you in even after it says it has, if that makes sense?

Dave

ps great hack!!

Not entirely sure what you mean, but try checking the cookie path to make sure it's set to just /

I have it set to the suggested /

Has me!

Think I've got it sorted, thanks for taking the time with me! Great product, like most of your products. Just one more question, when accessing the dbseocp. I've noticed that anyone can log into this, is this not a security issue?

This is by design. Not that everyone can access the DBSEO AdminCP, but that you can give permission to access it outside of your normal admins.

You will find an option under each Usergroup (probably the last option on the bottom of the list) that looks like this:

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2014/02/8.jpg

Just make sure it is set to "No" for any group you do not want to be able access and change the settings within the DBSEO AdminCP.

Disco_Dave 02-22-2014 06:44 AM

Found the setting for setting a password. To protect that domain :D

ForceHSS 02-23-2014 12:17 AM

pity it could not be set that only userid can see and access the SEO AdminCP even from the normal admincp

I'm interested in buying this because ever since vBSEO went offline the sitemap generator isn't working so we are being crawled much less than before and I don't want to lose traffic. Is another way to automatically submit sitemaps other than this plugin? I know vB has its own sitemap functionality but don't know how it compares.

As silly as it sounds, the "likes" function from vBSEO is something my site has come to rely on a lot. We don't use reputation at all, just have a count of likes given and received in the postbit. Is there something in dbseo that is similar? I know that there are add-ons we can use but it would be very convenient to have this transition easily.

Lastly, besides the sitemap problem is there any reason I need to switch from vBSEO? The URL rewrites are still working but have no idea about the SEO parts, or if the things vBSEO does are still relevant today. Maybe there is a security issue though or some other problem that makes it dangerous to keep running vBSEO?

DBSEO's sitemap builder was created based on the vB4 sitemap builder. The vB4 sitemap builder is vastly more powerful than vBSEO's, in terms of session handling and general functionality for the administrator, and DBSEO inherited this power.

Our Advanced Post Thanks / Like product has an importer from vBSEO Likes. We will never implement a similar function in DBSEO, not only because of the duplication issues but because we feel that this functionality is not relevant to SEO.

Unlike other products, DBSEO was designed to only include functionality that provide a direct benefit to SEO in some way or another. Research shows that links shared across social networks is the "new pingback", and such links gain a higher priority than automatically crawled links. For that reason, we implemented social sharing functionality.

There have been unconfirmed rumours of a new vBSEO exploit, but as I do not know of a single forum that's actually been exploited at this time I'm not sure how much credence should be given to this rumour.

That being said, the main reason to switch, IMO, is that DBSEO is supported. If you are having an issue with the mod on your site and I can't reproduce it locally, I will personally visit it and work with you to fix it, regardless if you're running the free Lite version or the paid Pro version.
I'm not sure how the support situation is with vBSEO now that the site is gone, but I would imagine that if you ran into a problem you would need to pay someone to fix it.

DBSEO is also slimmer than vBSEO, with the aforementioned non-SEO features not included. When we switched to DBSEO on dragonbyte-tech.com, we noticed a 33% speed increase. Other customers have reported smaller speed increases, or noticed no change.
Obviously this is going to depend very heavily on your server, so we make no promises or advertisements regarding speed increases, it's very much YMMV.

thanks for releasing lite version....but does this work when the forum lies in any other folder other than root?

It didn't work for me, until I moved it into public_html.

The forums are located in a public_html subfolder but not under the root folder directory...

Simple click of a button, but that feature is in the Pro version only.

XiTCLUB 02-24-2014 04:08 PM

The one click solution is extremely handy but it does cost.

I've got the Pro version installed now and am happy with it. I am not completely familiar with all the limitations of the Lite version, but I'm pretty sure you can still transition smoothly from vbSEO to DBSEO with the Lite version. It'll just take some patience and time to transfer the dozens of settings over manually.

Alan_SP 02-24-2014 04:50 PM

You can import it with importer, then it's automatically done, but also you could manually change settings to those in vBSEO. So, you don't have to buy pro version to use DBSEO.

EDIT: I was answering to XiTCLUB. :)
