The vb Org Like System
So why is it set up like this:

Thanks... |
I just got:
"You must 'Like' someone else's post before liking any more by New Joe" Hear Hear. |
This is the problem, I don't want to be limited, if i like someones post I want to like them, a few time today I wanted to like a few members but got that silly message.
I also don't see the point in liking random posts which I don't really want to like just so I can like the other person I wanted to like,,,, |
Doh!
IIRC, that is because the Likes system on here, actually is adding to the reputation.
but was does the rep system do it does not give anyone extra permissions
Nope, it's just a status thing.
Yeah, I brought this up recently, too. I always thought that was kinda odd to have it limited that way. I could understand if our Like statuses were tallied and displayed in some way, but all we seem to get is a list of the last ten Likes received and given on our profile. Like's aren't used as form of status on any website I know of, so it feels a little counterintuitive to the premise to have it that way here.
Your total likes are shown when you click on the username. I don't know how you would use them as a form of status though. I guess you could have bars like you do for regular reputation.

I get what they are saying, It's a bit frustrating to run across a great post and not be able to like it unless you friend the member. Seems counter productive for what it is there for in the first place, to give rep to good stuff.
While I like having buddies, I don't want my friends list to be full of members I don't know and more than likely will never communicate with. It also makes finding your real friends a pain in the mess of unneeded "buddies".. |

ah, was thinking about the voting and stuff.. my bad.. got it all mixed up.
To rate a mod you need to have mod mod "Marked as Installed" - and as far as I know no other voting requires any friends list on this site or in VB by default.

Joe was referring to rating them, not liking them - two different systems. :)
Correct- I mean like 4 star / 5 star / etc...
I'm easily confused.
Can we get back on topic of the OP please gents:p
For the record, I still was. :erm:
Back on topic: This suggestion has been made before and the official response was it is working as designed and limits were preferable so people didn't abuse the system or simply just "like" their friends.
Totally unrelated, but a few weeks ago someone asked about deleting likes you may have accidentally given (or you just changed your mind).
This should now be possible from the list of recent likes you have given (on your profile page). You have upto 7 days to delete a "like". |
So Paul, any chance of making the Likes so we can give them more freely than they are set up now or not?
Sorry, its not going to be changed atm.
Its a very low number (3 iirc) and the reasons its there are still valid. Given that the system has been in place for well over two years with little issue, I see no compelling reason to change it. |
Not even if I'm super annoying about it?
Granted, that seldom works. I imagine you'll see the topic pop up again from time to time, though. |
