Should I Upgrade to VB5?

With all the negative posts posts about VB5 should I stay away from it or are the people complaining a minority?

I run a very basic out of the box board. The only thing I've added is a different skin, Downloads and Gallery. I'm getting ready for an upgrade but plan on going to VB4.2.2 instead of VB5.x. Should I stay with 4.2.2 or take the plunge to 5.x.

Does VB5.x use more server resources than 4.x?

I've been all over the internet some say 5.x is okay and running well on their server.

I would try it on a test site first, to see if you like it, and how it reacts on your server.

I'd have to buy it to try it. No?

You can purchase the license, and you will be able to run either vB5 vB4 or vB3

If you don't want to purchase a new license, I would stick wit vB4.2.x IMO.

There is a demo you can try out first http://www.vbulletin.com/en/vb5-trial/

But if are are running 4.2.2 I would stay with that

Great advice from Force and Ozzy. But I will add, what is your compelling reason for considering the "upgrade?"

If your users are happy, what need for change? How will they react? It's important to remember we as board owners are essentially catering to the folks who hang out at our sites.

Just thinking if I'm getting ready for an upgrade from 4.0.6 to 4.2.2 if I should go all the way.

But.... What's the compelling reason?

I've been a vB license holder for close to 10 years, and still run ONLY version 3.8.7 and that is because there is NO compelling reason to "upgrade."

This alone has very likely save me ALOT of trouble. And my members are happy.

Why do you want to screw with their hangout, their clubhouse if you will, with no compelling reason?

All I am trying to do is answer the question you posed, "Should I Upgrade to VB5?" and my answer is - barring any compelling reason, NO.

It's part of the reason vB dot org still runs version 3. Heavily modified, heavily customized, but most importantly the membership likes it the way it is and there is no compelling reason to "upgrade" it.

Isn't there security issues running older versions?

There are security issues running any version of any forumware or CMS.

Do you have security issues right now?

Top right hand corner of the screen, beside your username. It's there when I test it.

Strictly speaking, older software will always be less secure than newer versions of any software. In this case, however, vB4 and vB5 forums seem to be especially being targeted in recent months. This doesn't necessarily mean that they're less secure. It just means that hackers are currently less interested in vB3 forums. Of course, this could change.

Check the demo, read the reviews. Weigh what it is you want from the software vs what it is it looks like it can actually deliver and decide based on that. You'll get nothing but mixed reviews if you ask directly on any of these boards, as, naturally, you're on a vB board, so you're going to get positive responses about vB, and then you've got the haters who've only stuck around to deter people from ever buying the software again ever. And, of course, the people who fall in between there somewhere. So far you've only gotten the replies from the folks, like me, in between. I think it falls short on some things, but in other places it seems to work fairly well. So I'm cautious as to what I recommend, as what I find satisfactory may not be what you're looking for.

No but going on 3 years I feel the need to catch up. I decided, I'm upgrading 4.0.8 to 4.2.2. I'll look at 5.x in another three years.

Thanks everyone for their help.

I notice you have a username, like the one here. If you logged in with the information the demo sends to your email, then your username would be your email address. Did you login with that information, or did you just register as a new user on the board? Because that would be why you have no administrative access.

It's supposed to be there, per my picture above.

In a word NO i`d say either stick with vb4 and upgrade to the latest working version 4.2.1 . 4.2.2 works fine but you do have to make some file edits to get rid of warning messages and another error .or just do what alot have done and go with I.P.BOARD ect . i`ll be moving to I.P.BOARD when i`ve got the funds to spare tbh but i`ll still use my vb license on another forum i`ve got thats on mybb now
