FunCaptcha v2

The biggest update to FunCaptcha yet has begun its official rollout!

For a detailed look at the ongoing updates, feel free to follow our blog as we'll be updating it as new features are activated, going in-depth with what's changing, why and how each area is seeing improvement.

Description

Spammers abuse your site, but users hate typing out twisty letters or ad phrases (aka CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA). Automated spam filters make mistakes and require constant checking. FunCaptcha presents a mini-game that blocks the bots while giving your users a few moments of fun. It's a real security solution hardened by experts and automatically updated to provide the best protection. It has been installed on thousands of sites, to glowing reviews. Try a demo on our site!

Users complete these little games faster than other CAPTCHAs, with fewer frustrating failures and no typing. They work on all browsers and mobile devices, using HTML5 with a fallback to Flash. Visually impaired users can complete an audio challenge. For a limited time, FunCaptcha can be customized for your site, using its color scheme, images, and logo. See this special offer for details.

Read about FunCaptcha on NBC. Learn more, give feedback, and ask questions at our website. Our epic battle against bots doesn't have to be a headache. Let's fight while having some fun!

We're also a partner of stopforumspam.com - and use their API to raise the difficulty of FunCaptcha for suspect bots.

Installation
  1. Download and unzip funcaptcha_vbulletin.zip
  2. Upload the contents in the upload folder to your /includes/ directory.
  3. In your vBullet Adminstrator Control Panel, click on "Pugins & Products" and then click "Manage Products".
  4. Click Add/Import Product.
  5. Click choose file and select product-funcaptcha.xml from the download.
  6. On the top left sidebar, click "Settings" then click "Human Verification Manager".
  7. Select "FunCaptcha".
  8. Click "Save".
  9. Scroll down and register your FunCaptcha using the form.
  10. Copy the keys from the completed form into the FunCaptcha plugin settings.
  11. Click "save".

Patch notes:
1.2.1
? Toggle JavaScript fallback on/off (disabled by default for security reasons). We recommend it disabled as bots generally browse with JavaScript disabled.
1.2.0
? Color themes. You can now change the look of FunCaptcha!
? Support for versions of PHP without JSON or CURL.
? Proxy server support.
1.1.0
? Lightbox mode. This exposes a new display mode for FunCaptcha, it will make FunCaptcha appear when your user hits submit, rather than inline in the form.
1.0.0
? First release.

Installed, tested.

Works good. Thanks for the share!

ozzy47 09-08-2013 10:35 AM

Thanks for taking the time to share this. It is kinda cool, but to be honest, it would annoy the heck out of me to use that in order to register to a site. But I could see the potential of it though.

FunCaptcha 09-08-2013 11:03 AM

Thanks for trying it Krusty!

Ya Ozzy, having no CAPTCHA is better than having even the best one. But they are sadly necessary thanks to bots, which don't want us to have nice things. At least you only have to do it once as you reg, and it takes about 10 seconds.

LgsOfChampions 09-08-2013 12:47 PM

I get this error when I installed. Love the Idea, hope we can get this working

I was going to say the same thing, personally I hate them, I would never use anything like this.

You'll see this error when you have not correctly added your public and private keys in the settings screen.

In your vBulletin Administrator Control Panel, click on ?Settings? in the sidebar on the left. Then click ?Human Verification Manager?.

Then you'll need to scroll down to the form at the bottom, called "FunCaptcha Registration". Enter your details there, and you'll end up with a screen that has the public and private keys you need to copy into the settings just above the form.

Once you've done that, it should work great. If you need further help, please reach out to us at info@funcaptcha.co and we'll be able to look at your account details and see if something else is going on.

You can also see these steps with images at our site: https://www.funcaptcha.co/setup/

Just wanted to bring some more attention to our deal of offering a fully customised FunCaptcha to users - you can see a few examples of that in our gallery here. And you can signup for that offer at this link.

Looking forward to hearing some more feedback from everyone - let me know what you would like to see in a plugin update and we'll see how we can make it happen!

Hi Bombardier,

We sent you a mockup earlier. We look forward to seeing FunCaptcha on your forum!

Hello everyone,

We have just issued an update - version 1.1 of our plugin. This exposes a new mode for FunCaptcha, it will make FunCaptcha appear when your user hits submit, rather than inline in the form (though you can choose that old mode still if you'd like in the settings!).

You can see an example of it on our websites registration form

I have attached a picture of this mode being shown on vBulletin.

FunCaptcha Team

Hello everyone,

I'd like to announce we are now a partner of stopforumspam.com and use their API to scale the difficulty of FunCaptcha even further, so if your user is a listed bot, they'll get a harder challenge.

We have also just updated our plugin to version 1.2.

This update includes some new features.

Firstly and mainly, we have added support to change the color scheme of FunCaptcha, currently there are 4 options.

We have also added support for Proxy servers and versions of PHP without CURL and JSON support and some other misc bug fixes, as well as now including a version check URL.

Any questions or feature requests, please let us know!

Kind regards,
FunCaptcha team

Hi Auron,

We're sorry you got multiple messages-- it's not clear to us when the same admin runs multiple boards. Please do know that we don't spam anyone. We use no automation whatsoever as we reach out to vBulletin admins. We find great online communities, look at them with our own human eyeballs, determine what kind of solution it needs, assess its visual theme (so we can customize FunCaptcha to suit it personally), and send the message by hand.

We're sorry if it annoyed you, we'll keep trying to do better so we don't give the wrong impression to admins. We welcome any more feedback-- please send us a PM and we'll incorporate your feedback.

Kind regards,
FunCaptcha team

Hi synseal,

Can you PM me details of your site so we can look into it? We've had no indications of being bypassed to date, so we'll look and see what might be the cause of this ASAP.

Kind regards,
FunCaptcha team.

They are probably using a program such as XRumer, which the program is able to bypass security techniques commonly used by many forums and blogs to deter automated spam, such as account registration, client detection, CAPTCHAs, and e-mail activation before posting.

You may be right. We've checked our logs and have no strange/un-humane activity for FunCaptcha solves themselves, however our javascript fallback alternative may not offer the same protection.

We've been using a strong text CAPTCHA as a fallback if Javascript is disabled. We've just disabled that feature for now (done remotely, no update to plugins required) as we know XRumer is known to be able to crack that, and we'll look at a better way to provide javascript fallback that remains secure.

We may update the plugin giving admins the option to enable it, with it disabled by default, based on some further research into the issue.

Regards,
FunCaptcha team

This is because captchas are obsolete and all they really do is annoy legitimate humans.

End the spam:

http://ozzmodz.com/showthread.php/50...g-Spam-Is-Over

FunCaptcha 02-06-2014 11:35 PM

Hello all,

Version 1.2.1 is now released. It gives site admins the option to have the fallback to text CAPTCHA enabled (allowing compatibility with older browsers and users who disable JS), or the fallback disabled (which is more secure). From this version forward, the fallback will be disabled by default, so if you install this and still want FunCaptcha to fallback to a text CAPTCHA when JavaScript is disabled, you will need to go into the settings to enable the fallback. If the fallback is disabled and JavaScript is disabled, users see a message prompting them to enable JavaScript.

Why this change? After a thorough review, we find that some spamming programs can easily solve many text CAPTCHAs, including those we could use when the user has JavaScript disabled. These programs can pretend to be a browser with JavaScript disabled. For maximum protection, we recommend keeping the fallback to text CAPTCHA disabled. As always, we are dedicated to keeping the bots out while giving your users a faster, easier experience.

Kind regards,
FunCaptcha team

Hi there,

There could be a couple of reasons for this error, so the best way for us to solve it is for you to send us your Error Logs via support@funcaptcha.com

Once we find a resolution for you, we'll also post here for anyone else who may have the same issue in the future.

Best regards,
