vB.org Members

Well this site has reached a milestone today, it has hit a member count of 500,000, yes a half a million members.

BirdOPrey5 08-24-2013 09:46 AM

Nice catch... must be a lot of deleted users, userid 500000 was assigned last year - https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?u=500000

ozzy47 08-24-2013 09:53 AM

Yeah probably, the last member to sign up as of this post has a id # of 517,332

But at least the counter has finally reached the milestone. :)

What's the meaning of Total Members when the Active members are just 1o/o ??
Threads: 270,416, Posts: 2,185,768, Members: 500,022, Active Members: 5,692

There are thousands who have to visit this site for 5+ years. Even my first username is still here but has to appear online since Dec 2003 :)

ozzy47 08-24-2013 01:27 PM

It's no big meaning, it is just a milestone. Same thing as a forum having 2,000,000 posts, not all of them have been read recently, or read in many years. :)

Christos Teriakis 08-24-2013 01:49 PM

...lol...... Do you know that feeling to know that you're writing something wrong but can't find it? It tooks me 15 min... and finally was 1 o/o and not 1 o/oo.
Yes, I do agree. It was mostly a sad post... I believe that around 2005-2007 the active members were around 10%. I'm not totally sure they were a lot.

ozzy47 08-24-2013 01:54 PM

Yeah member participation has dropped somewhat, but that is probably due to XenForo and the fact that their is so many sites out there that offer vBulletin support now, so alot of members choose to go there rather than here.

I don't believe that xenForo is a reason ... or the forum competition at all. Most people prefer to use FB instead forums. And you know something? Not because FB is something so nice. For me is nothing. But is easier to use and (most important), easier to access it with smartphones. I'm seeing it everyday with my daughter and my niece. Don't know if it's a local service or international but the access 0.facebook.com which is free of mobile charges. All the day are connected there. The same person they connect to FB very rarelly from their laptops. So, the problem is how easy can access the news on nowadays.

Don't know how old are you but maybe you have heard for Usenet Newsgroups. Were so popular 15+ years ago. Now who knows them or who uses them?

I do have a feeling that in some years only some very big and/or unique forums will be alive. Maybe using vB, or xF or IPB has no sense. Should be few only.

No its due to most going to other forum software...:D

ozzy47 08-25-2013 02:05 PM

Yeah that is why I mentioned XenForo, since it is the new kid on the block, and quite a few good members from here migrated to that. :)

Christos Teriakis 08-25-2013 03:29 PM

I've post many times, many negative reviews for vBulletin. But even if I have active licenses for xenForo, IPB (and ALL the official addons) and finally WBB (quess what. I found it much better than other two), I can't use any of them. Very difficult to find how to do even the simplier things. After so many years using vB, good or bad, I'm stuck with it.

Chris8 08-25-2013 05:04 PM

I think this number really means nothing. Significant amount of this must be spam bots, another significant number included there must are users that registered only to ask some question and never bought the software. There must be way less real users and even less of the ones that actually post and visit here regularly. Though it's still one of most popular forum software.

ozzy47 08-25-2013 05:22 PM

Yeah a good gauge is the active users, but that will also depend on what the setting is for cutoff time.

We never know Chris, i will agree with half of your opinion. What if, if more members started to hate fb like me. To me, social community/sharing is like a cycle, if you don't match with the current trend you will be ignored. One day or the other people will be bored to use fb, they will find an alternative to spend their leisure time. They will join a forum that interests them & the no of people who likes & hates fb will be the same at one point. Thus forum's won't be dead at any point if you know understand your users needs.

To hate something in most cases means that you loved it before. And really can't understand how people loved this "thing" other than the reasons that I mentioned above. Never liked it and never used it in real. My account is there since 2007 but very rarelly I'm going online.

What I believe that made it popular comparing with forums is that forums are for specific users (eg fans of a game console, fans of fishing, or (more specific) technicians), while FB is an arena open to all. It started as a way to connect old schoolmates and finished as "anything for all".

But again I have a feeling that forums (at least the way that we know them), should be out of field soon. It's just a feeling and nothing more. Evolution. That's why I mentioned before Newsgroups. Maybe forum software need a refresh. Maybe to give more attention to mobile access. The current solutions for mobile access is for fun. Needs deeper analysis... less features but more speedy. Or something like this.

I seen somewhere a chat (that one that exist at the bottom line, just like FB), which was working by talking to it. It was funny... but really worked. I tried it even with my bad English (and the old voice), but it wrote the message correct.

Maybe some features like posting by SMS or (cheaper) post by email. Really don't know. But they need a refresh for sure.

socialteenz 08-25-2013 06:35 PM

@Christos, But 90% of the fb users use it to show off purpose only, only few people use it the way it is meant to be. No offense anyone, i am bored of this fkn fb!

Yes, forum software's needs to do tweaked to match with the current trend, new features etc.

I strongly believe forums won't be dead even in the near future.

What comes up must go down!

ozzy47 08-28-2013 10:38 AM

Yeah, me personally I never got into the facebook thing, or twitter and all those other social group stuff, just not for me.

CAG CheechDogg 08-28-2013 11:28 AM

I can't stand facebook myself, I completely blocked facebook from our website's features, the fb connect, I use the ban spiders mod to block fb from my site completely, don't want it don't need it. Nevertheless the 500k member count is till a "milestone" regardless of how the count got to that level.

Lol ! My gaming site is about to hit 3,000 registered members soon and I am excited for that. I plan on giving something away on our site when that 3k member registers! ..
