Question about "Welcome to our newest member,"
We are running vBulletin 4.2.1.
Is there a modification we can make so only new members who complete the registration confirmation process get identified by the "Welcome to our newest member," in the Statistics section of "What's Going On?"? |
I concur, would love to know how to not show a spam person until someone becomes a full member
|
Have you tried upgrading to 4.2.2?

You didn't even attempt to answer his question, instead you continue to ask questions instead of answering them and just frustrating people ... why? |

Simply telling someone to "upgrade" or asking them if they have upgraded doesn't answer anyone's questions and frustrates them instead ... To me it seems like he doesn't even bother to read and take anything into consideration and instead just wants people to upgrade without giving them an explanation as to how upgrading will or should help ..... |
Well their excuse is that only the latest version of vB is supported. But this question is not on vB.com it is on vB.org, so there should be no issue with that, as they are not on the official support site.
But I will say, if this thread was posted today, I would have also suggested to the OP to upgrade, and see it that fixes the issue, since the version they were running has many unpatched security issues. |
It doesn't fix the issue though ... I still see spam and unverified registrations show up on 4.2.2 sites ....
And like you said, this is not a question on vb.com ..it's here and questions should just be answered instead of just trying to brush things under the rug and suggesting that simply upgrading "might" fix the issue ... if he doesn't know if upgrading "will" fix the issue then he shouldn't even comment or "unintentionally" patronize people asking questions as he so often seems to do ... Most of the questions people ask here are questions that they are told to ask here and not on vb.com because like you said it is not a supported version of vB, yet he comes on here and answers them with questions or in a patronizing manner like he does on vB.com and that I don't think is right at all .... |

I know that all to well, I would have told the OP to upgrade to protect his site, as well as letting them know it is a long standing issue. :)

Now that I look at the code, it should not be showing, Users Awaiting Email Confirmation or Users Awaiting Moderation.

TBH, I don't think it does, but it will show a banned member.
|
Hmm ok ... maybe someone that has an unverified account can confirm for us .......
|
No Cheech, IT DOES SHOW UP... it does for a whole day until your vbull runs the daily query that cleans them out, or at least I think that's why mine disappeared.
HOWEVER, it's still a real pain in the @$$ to have them show up in the first place and like I replied in the other thread that just fouls me into running around checking to see if it's a legit register or not!! The site I'm talking about is young and membership is about to take off. I have them set to email verify and moderate so I can setup their usergroup before getting in, but daily I waste time looking for that one or 2 weird named 'new users' who aren't legit |
I suppose big forums use completely automatic member approval based various filtering methods. I manually approve every new member. I use this:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=268113 to alert me that a new member needs approval. All my staff members, (myself and one other) have admin perms to approve new members. I never pay any attention to the latest member in the What's Going On box. |
Frosti I knew it did .... However, I didn't know that there was a daily task that cleans them out ....
I don't have to worry about legit accounts much anymore ... but I can definitely relate and remember how frustrating it was to have to do what you are doing now ... |

Here is the 'new user' shown (pic1) No account to 'moderate' (pic2)
user search for that name (pic3) and result, no account at all (pic4) SO, lets see if it's GONE after the next cycle. Plus, I would love to know what usergroup this guy is suppose to be in right now?? he is in LIMBO cuz I also do not show anyone in any usergroup, but as you can see he is my 'newest member'. Just saying (yes my board is young but I am about to jump start it and again would love to not have this headache)(My other site doesn't do this??) UPDATE: I performed a 'cleanup' manually and the 'new member' was gone, however, that still doesn't cure why he was ever there, and still searching for some coding that doesn't even allow on to SHOW UP till legit member |
I agree. Some people don't upgrade to the latest vBulletin 4 release because people like me that have many addons, template edits/mods, and a very custom style, is way to risky to upgrade vB. There is a saying, if its not broken, don't fix it. If I have my forum exactly the way I want, and there are no issues or errors, why would I risk the upgrade and most likely break most of the custom addons, edits, and style. My entire site might even go down.
|
That's what test-installations are for. And given the known security issues in all vB4 versions below v.2.2 this seems rather short-sighted in my opinion. If you are a skilled enough admin to take that risk or fix the security issues yourself, then fixing the problems that come with an upgrade should not cause you headaches. If they do, then are you really that comfortable with known security issues? Of course, its your choice, but surely its not a way I would widely recommend.
Especially since the upgrade we're talking here, from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2, will hardly break anything. |

I guarantee you that if Vb offered paid updates and patches for older versions they would get a great response from their customers as well as make money out of it because of it. Anyways ... it's just an idea and something that we all know is not going to happen ... Oh and these updates and patches could be tracked the same way as licenses are tracked so that you can't just give away these updates and patches to others .... does that make sense? |

Where is there a list of all these known security issues?
|
At vbulletin.com. The announcements forum. All that has not been fixed for your version is obviously still open.
