vbulletin and google page speed service
Has anyone been successful in getting Google's page speed service working with vbulletin 4?
I've tried everything and people can't even register on the site, Admin and Mod CP log you out and Moderate by IP doesn't work as it's feeding google's IP's into the pages? |
There is a couple of people that mention they have tried it here - https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...=231873&page=2

Let us know how you get on with it, I've been meaning to test out pagespeed since they gave me an invite last year but due to the lack of information of vbulletin sites using it I've not touched it yet.

Can't seem to get it to work. It just reads google's IP address for every user. It's playing with my IP spam control settings also. Not sure what to do apart from not use it. On a plus note the forum is lightening fast.

Did you install the Proxy to Real IP Conversion mod and do the edits that Cybex made after having the same IP problem here? - https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost....&postcount=182
|
I did that yes and still getting the same issue as Cybex

I'd be interested in seeing how this is going.

I'd also be interested to hear the latest.
I remember a little while back I tested it on vBulletin but the only thing I remember was it seemed to totally screw up Google Analytics, which I kind of find humerous. You'd think they would play well together but they didn't. Everytime Pagespeed would serve a page (maybe for the first time I'm not sure) it would show upwards of 15 plus connections on the same file. I only had it running for a short time (about 6 hours) because I did not see much improvement in speed at all, actually a degradation in most cases. I do remember there being a few quirks with it also but for the life of me I can't remember exactly what they were. I do know at the time it caused of few pages of vbulletin not to render at all especially when being served for the first time but I didn't try and diagnose the issues at the time since it was an active site I was testing on. At the time most of the pages that were rendering were actually taking longer to load then without Pagespeed. I personally use x-cache on my server which works great with vB. I would be willing to try Pagespeed again if I could hear some more feedback. From what little experience I had with it, I think if you don't have an overloaded or underpowered server already your benefits with Pagespeed on a vB site will be negligible. I hope to hear/see someone prove me wrong though! |
Okay, I have fairly conclusive data to report and will get more in-depth when I can.
Tested on a dead forum first and the site went from noticeable latency to like I was pulling from my hard drive. Did the edits in this download. https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=201211 At midnight last night switch DNS from Cloudflare to Google Page Speed on a massive, busy forum (1200 simultaneous users). Intended to test overnight but DNS propagation is taking over 11 hours now and is finally starting to reflect that we're on Google's servers. A scattering of members are initially reporting oddities and being logged out but no major outcry. I will report back. I recommend you do the Page Speed test and decide from there. |
Okay, here's the deal. Google Page Speed offers no speed advantage on my forum over Cloudflare according to multiple GTMetrix tests. The big disadvantage is I don't like Google having access to my data and Page Speed offers no security features but the advantage is that Cloudflare has recently suffered daily DOS attacks. It's a toss-up but I think in the end I am going to go back to Cloudflare.
Would be interested to hear from others who have compared the two, or maybe a CDN. --------------- Added [DATE]1373743846[/DATE] at [TIME]1373743846[/TIME] --------------- I stand corrected. Quote:

As a follow-up, I pulled the plug on Page Speed and went back to Cloudflare. There are just too many oddities that happen with Page Speed, one of which is members complaining about pages "jumping" on tablets and mobile devices. Page Speed loads the first banner ad on my site last, so if someone is viewing below the fold, that ad loads and pushes everything down and it's annoying. Overnight I got about 10 emails from members complaining that vBulletin told them their IP address was banned. That was the final straw and I'm going back to Cloudflare. I should also mention that I ran GTMetrix tests three different times and none of them were faster than Cloudflare; all were the same or slightly slower.

You can use http://www.webpagetest.org/compare to roughly check how your site will fair side by side with Google Page Speed service. Note aggressive versus default Page Speed option - aggressive has additional pagespeed filters which can break a site's functionality, so try both default and aggressive. Also GTmetrix tests are test location dependent so will vary for different forums depending on where the forums' servers are located. |
As a further follow-up, I have integrated MaxCDN and am achieving the fastest load times of the three services (MaxCDN, Cloudflare, Google Page Speed). It requires vBSEO and is more difficult to integrate; I had to get help from their online chat, which I would rate as excellent.
Tip: If you stay on the MaxCDN site long enough before signing up, a popup will offer you 20% if you signup right then. Saved me $8. --------------- Added [DATE]1373998807[/DATE] at [TIME]1373998807[/TIME] --------------- Had issues with MaxCDN breaking CSS. Their tech support worked tirelessly to get the issue resolved. I'm convinced that this is the answer for my site. |
Yesterday I integrate Google PageSpeed CNAME in my domain, I have the original server litespeed + vbulletin + xcache + vBSEO, page carried me very fast and everything loaded fine, but began login error problems and some problems in the CSS and JS codes, I also fail with the IPS only showed me all the IP users google and not the user, disable the rewrite that have not had any solution, so I started to have some options of disable rewrite parts of the minify css and I am well, now the problem of access and to the IPS forum and could not fix, read a message about IP's http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum...ded-for-header, has not helped me at all, if anyone has more news of possible solutions would be very good comment here.

You need to follow these instructions carefully and install the product.

The ad banners are making the page jump, because their container is not set to a static size - so before the ad banner loads, that container may be 0px high, but after it loads it is probably 128px high. Simply set the container for your ad banner to a static size, which will keep the page from jumping, as it no longer matters if the banner is loaded or not - the size is static. You probably don't want to go back and mess with it again, which I understand. But I figured I'd post this since more than one user reported having the problem, and it really is a simple fix... Plus, I like focusing on the user experience, and the sooner users can use your page the better. I hate the idea of making people wait for ads to load before they can actually use the site. |
