Registration requires moderation but they are still registering

when I was on vBulletin 4 if I set registration to require moderation then the users who register won't show up in the latest registered member list until I approve them in the users awaiting moderation list

now I downgraded to vB3 but I can see names of users being registered in the main page on the latest registered members list.

what gives?

what am I missing here

MaXimus 12-25-2012 04:16 PM

I think this forum is dead

Max Taxable 12-25-2012 06:03 PM

Lots of people have read this but I guess none have any answers for you. I don't either.

MaXimus 12-26-2012 01:27 AM

I posted this on vbulletin forums.com and one of their support agents told me to disable the users having to be moderated, save, then renable it again

I did that, lets see how it goes

Ok, I can verify that this trick solved the problem :) I am getting the newly registered users now in the moderation que

Could you please provide the whole setting?

Its in AdminCp>vBulletin Options>User Registration Options

MaXimus 12-26-2012 06:24 PM

Nevermind, I spoke too soon I guess. Some users do appear on the awaiting moderation list but others are being registered automatically.

Please help :(

In the first post, it sounds like your problem is who is showing up in the Current Active Users list. In your last post, it sounds like your problem is whether users are being put into the Users Awaiting Moderation group or the Registered Users group. What is the exact problem you are trying to solve?

Well the users are not going to the users awaiting moderation group, they are going straight to the registered users group

only like once, one user did actually go to the users awaiting moderation que.

I am getting insane amount of spammy registrations and have temporarily disabled registration until I fix this

Please help.....

PS: if you want my admin login to check, please let me know

What steps have you taken to prevent spammer/bot registrations? do you have any mods installed for it?

I have a Question/Answer thing, no mods

Questions are:

  • What animal barks? (a ___)
  • What company created Android (and also runs the largest search engine on the Internet)?
  • What is the name of the planet we live on?
  • What animal quacks? (a ____)
  • All people have a mother and a ______?
  • What company makes the iPhone (one word answer)?
  • The ___ rises in the morning and sets at night?

In addition, I have a few required fields during registration like the user's CPU, hard disk, RAM, graphics chipset, but they are just putting jibberish in there that's how I differentiate the real people from the spammers and delete them

This will stop a large amount of autospam bot registrations cold, and no legitimate humans will ever know it's there.:

This may help https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=265141 but there's plenty of anti spam/bot mods out there make good use of them and your troubles will be pretty much over. As for waiting for a moderator from here to login to your site, you may have a long wait as thats not their job, settings are things that you set specifically for your forum, someone else setting them may not be how you want your forum to respond.

Your best bet would be to tell us which settings in admincp>vBulletin settings>User registration options you have set ....etc then we can tell you what, in general, we have ours set to.

but this mod all it does is prevent number only registrations. none of the spammers I've had were number only spammers they had jibberish usernames

additionally, my problem is still as follows:

With VB4, if I set the option that new users require moderation, i would not even see them in the Latest Registered members list on my main forums page until I have actually went to the users moderation que and approved or deleted them

now with VB3, I set that option, but it only happened once that a user was moved to the moderation que, and I got 3 others users who were able to register successfully despite the fact that I have users must be moderated :(

Additionally, are the questions / answers that I put good enough or are they easy for spammers to bypass?

Simon Lloyd 12-29-2012 10:23 AM

If your core files are compromised then it's possible to register without going through the correct channel, if thats not the case then its possible your Q&A answers are already cached with spammers/bots and thats how they are getting by. So, you need to add extra measures to stop the automated registrations - do you have email confirmation turned on?

Seriously, search here and install some stuff like the following:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=176481
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=261492
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=264932
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=201466

There are loads, make use of them :)

MaXimus 12-29-2012 05:57 PM

I solved it thanks to your suggestion bro

I deleted all those easy questions and just put one hard question that is easy for real people who know about computers to answer, and i didn't get a spammy registration since then :)

Simon Lloyd 12-29-2012 06:22 PM

So that shows that all the answers to your questions had been registered with the spammers/bots - glad you're sorted!

I rotate a long, convoluted, instruction to paste the question into the answer box...
