Newsletter that REALLY works for 4.2

Can someone please write a newsletter mod that really works for 4.2? Seems the ones out there all have issues.

Thank you so much!!!

Nelson

I need to modify my request now that 5.0 is coming out...

We need a newsletter that WORKS. Emailing a newsletter to our members keeps them involved and it is an IMPORTANT feature for the VBulletin forum.

Thank you!

Nelson

Every time you run a NEWSLETTER to your members, you get a HUGE spike in participation on your forum!

A newsletter is VERY needed, please!! I am surprised no one did this yet!

Thanks.

I would think that some one can just enhance the current member list with a individual or mass e-mail option.

I am sure vB team can do this or some one reading this.

We do need this feature.

Check out microNewletter, originally written by MicroHellas (Maria) but i think her partner Christeris now runs it (just launching his own site), the newsletter supports mailing lists, latest threads, members...etc, featured content.........too many things to list, i use it (vb3 but i believe it's set for vb4 too) and it's brilliant!

Thank you for your supporting words. There is no any difference between vB3 and vB4 versions because these addons are 100% operating in admincp, which (Thanks God) they haven't any changes netween vB3 and vB4.

Hmm, I've been hunting microNewsletter for 15 minutes and didn't realize it was actually on christeris now until I came on this thread. You should say on your site that it was formerly microNewsletter LOL

Very good.

Is there way to try it first?

Eric

Nelson58 01-13-2013 04:09 PM

No, and there are no installation instructions.

When I asked for help because I had trouble getting it to work, he refunded my money and banned me from his site. Apparently, that is his idea of tech support.

Not trying to flame the guy, just stating facts.

If you want to state facts then please do it on the honest way. You're saying that you have troubles to get it working. That's not true. You were able to build and send newsletter (actually you sent me by email a copy of it). What you were unable to do is to put your own header/footer. Even if design/code modifications are NOT supporting from any company (even vBulletin does not support design/code modifications), I said you that I'll do it just because I wanted to help you (again... it was help... no support). You sent me your URL a day after and you expecting to have it ready in less than 24h !! That's incredible. When I'm offering something you can't press me to do it right now. I had scheduled to do it on weekend.

What you did? In less than 24 hours you start posting here that there is no support etc etc. Do you know any normal people who will helps you after it? No. That was what I did. I issued a full refund, I allowed you to continue using my mods (14 in total), and YES I banned you from my site. What's wrong here? You're administrating forum too. You don't ban members whom you don't like? You do. This is what I did and this is the reason that I wrote you. That you're not welcome in my site any more. Please drop the myth that because I'm seller I'll accept anyone to my site. Yes I want sales, yes I want customers. But I don't beg for them. That's the difference.

Chris
PS: And next time please avoid writing such things

I'm going to block your email. You are a ++++ing loser.

Nelson58 01-13-2013 06:50 PM

I understand. So if a customer becomes impatient because they need help and didn't get it in 24 hours, and try to get it somewhere else, you ban them? That's your idea of customer service?

I guess no customers EVER get frustrated after waiting a day for support. That never happens, right? And if they don't get support from you, and ask elsewhere, they should be banned from ever getting support from you, right? And what I said was 100% true and factual, none of your add-ons have installation instructions either with the mod or on your site.

Frankly, Chris, you don't belong in any service-related industry if you lose your cool and ban people the way you did to me. You can't ban every customer who is impatient. If you do, you won't have any customers. In service industries, you are bound to run into customers who are demanding and impatient- it's the nature of the beast.

I am going to let this die because the way you responded, by banning me, speaks for itself.
It's bad customer support, and I think you have some anger issues.

By the way, your header states:

"I'm not active member on this site anymore. My account exists as I can't delete it.
I wish all the best to vBulletin Community."

yet you seem to be quite active on the forum. Can you tell us what is up with that?
Did you lose your temper one day on here and write that?

David,

After a day of playing around with it, I was able to get Chris' mod working, so you may want to try it, if you can deal with his temper. He charges $34.95 for it on his site.

While the add-on advertises that it allows you to create a newsletter with the "look and feel" of your site, in reality, you will need a separate HTML generator like CoffeeCup (which is free) in order to generate the HTML header and footer required for the "look and feel" of your web site. Just putting in the code from the header and footer templates into the header and footer area of the add-on will not work, as I found out. You will have to generate your own header and footer and then place the HTML in each space for that purpose.

The add-on does not let you schedule the time when a newsletter is sent, only the date or day of the week or month. Newsletters are all sent at 1am. That cannot be changed.

I also had a lot of trouble getting it to actually send out the newsleter. Unlike commbull, you do not add it to the Scheduled Tasks area of Admincp. If you do, you will create a lot of confusion, and it will not work correctly.

There are probably a few other quirks that I missed. If you have any questions, please feel free to hit me up. Of course, a lot of this could have been avoided if there were some simple installation instructions with it.

Everything is about addiction. I'm using this site since Oct 2003 so it's difficult to go away from one day to the other. Lynne can confirm that I asked her even to ban me for ever as a way to stop coming here, but this is something that can't be done. So for the moment my text has the meaning that I'm not active as coder anymore. I don't like to talk about mods (any mod not only mine) or to download mods. But if you make a search you'll find that I have helped some users here even by posting very long code to solve their problems. Do a search and you'll find them.

Sure you'll have problems with cronjobs. Not for Newsletter, but with all cronjobs. Because you've removed the cron image from the footer, even if there is warning about it. Check and compare the code of your site with my site (or any other vB site).

Your site:
Code:

<!-- Do not remove cronimage or your scheduled tasks will cease to function -->
<!-- Do not remove cronimage or your scheduled tasks will cease to function-->

My site:
Code:

<!-- Do not remove cronimage or your scheduled tasks will cease to function -->
<img src="https://www.christeris.com/cron.php?rand=1358148597" alt="" width="1" height="1" border="0" />
<!-- Do not remove cronimage or your scheduled tasks will cease to function -->

So please dont say that my mod does not works. Actually there 100+ who are using it without problems.

Are you running VB 4.2 ?

Have you sent the newsletter to your forum members successfully? If so, could you send me a copy if I register on your forum? (I'd like to see it)

David

David,

Running 4.2 PL3. Yes, the newsletter worked after I tweaked it. I can send you a copy without your joining.

It worked without it once I tweaked it. By the way where in your installation documentation do you state that ? Try nowhere, because you do not provide installation instructions, tips, or even a ReadMe file. Nothing.

Add to that no customer service or support, and the person who buys from you is left stumbling in the dark. Ask you for help, wait at least 24 hours, get nothing. Ask somewhere else, and you get banned. Nice, very nice.

Nowhere. Because this is at vB documentation. As I said if your don't have it none cronjob will run.
As for the documentation for my scripts. There are at least 3 posts in my site saying that still there is no documentation. There are no even product details. That's why the prices are so low.

Hi Chris,

Software works great, and I think the little newsletter.css looks decent enough.

However there's an issue when I send to a Gmail account -- it doesn't render the CSS.

Any ideas or is there a trick to make Google recognize the css?

Maybe I can forward the emails or send you screenshots to explain better, but basically when I send to my Gmail account, there is no pretty formatting, it is all just plain.

Thanks!
Eric

I played around with this and partially got it to work... looks a little different from the way it's supposed to, but not too far off. I added this to functions, just above where it says "Prepare Test Email:

Code:

  //convert css to inline
  require_once('newsletter/CssToInlineStyles.php');

  // create instance
  $cssToInlineStyles = new CssToInlineStyles();
  $cssToInlineStyles->setHTML($message);
  $cssToInlineStyles->setCSS($css);
  $message = $cssToInlineStyles->convert();

  // Prepare Test Email

You can Google CssToInlineStyles, it's on Github.

--------------- Added [DATE]1358384791[/DATE] at [TIME]1358384791[/TIME] ---------------

I also put this in newsletter_sendemails.php, not really sure this will work, eek.

Code:

        //convert css to inline
        require_once('newsletter/CssToInlineStyles.php');

        // create instance
        $cssToInlineStyles = new CssToInlineStyles();
        $cssToInlineStyles->setHTML($bodytext);
        $cssToInlineStyles->setCSS($css);
        $bodytext = $cssToInlineStyles->convert();

        $mail->Body = $bodytext;

--------------- Added [DATE]1358384935[/DATE] at [TIME]1358384935[/TIME] ---------------

Oh no wait, newsletter_sendemails.php doesn't have $css, so I put this in newsletter_prepare.php

Code:

        //convert css to inline
        require_once('newsletter/CssToInlineStyles.php');

        // create instance
        $cssToInlineStyles = new CssToInlineStyles();
        $cssToInlineStyles->setHTML($message);
        $cssToInlineStyles->setCSS($css);
        $message = $cssToInlineStyles->convert();

        $vbulletin->db->query_write("UPDATE ".TABLE_PREFIX."newsletter_newsletters SET subject='$subject', message='$message', adsmessage='$adsmessage', ready='$ready', version='$version' WHERE id=$newsletterid");

Christos Teriakis 01-17-2013 05:48 AM

Well I never thought that GMail needs special css. Thank you for pointing me there I'll check it.

Chris

Maybe add an absolute link to the css file in the header of the newsletter?
