Anyone else getting higher than usual spam signups?

I've got Glowhost Spam-o-matic but I've seen a sudden surge in spam signups over the last two days.

I've got the Akismet API code in my spam-o-matic settings. Is there a problem with Akismet? Is anyone else seeing a sudden increase in the number of spam signups?

Craigr 09-04-2012 09:03 AM

Me too, have had loads in the past few days. :(
Quite a few got past Spam-o-matic too, but luckily the posts were tagged for moderation.

I'm using StopForumSpam and this mod stops in my forum over 99% of bot registrations.

In the logfile you see the hundreds of tried registrations from bots a day. Totally, there are thousands.

I have also seen a large influx of spam and found this thread searching for additional remedies. lol

Over the last several days StopForumSpam seems to be having problems. I saw a message on their website the other day saying they were down. Subsequent to that and on numerous occasions over the last few days their site has been inaccessible.

This may be part of the increased spam coming through. I don't know to what extent Akismet's API works in GlowHost's Spamomatic but it doesn't seem to be blocking a lot of the spam that's been hitting recently. Perhaps the spammers who target blogs - the type Akismet has probably the most data on - are different to the forum spammers.

So have I...
Normaly 0 spam registrations per day.
Unfortunately this site was down for 10 hours last night and 19 spammers had signed up and were posting.

I have also Stop the registration bots installed, and this blocks a huge amount of spammers.
I have set the registratin time at 27 seconds or mor.
Spammers and bots signup faster (1 or 2 seconds) so they don't pass.

i hope that you used the new API link for registration, it was posted on their forums that if you use their API you need to update your link to match otherwise they cant get through

you need to open functions_ghsom.php

and change all

PHP Code:

stopforumspam.org

to

PHP Code:

api.stopforumspam.org

Stefan118 10-22-2012 07:40 PM

The api key is only to report spammers.
No need for the addon to work.

this is where you are wrong if stopforumspam.org API is down then registration will be allowed, api.stopforumspam.org is the new API where we are supposed to report spammers as the old one at stopforumspam.org is no longer being updated it clearly says that in their forums and ask all to update their api link from

stopforumspam.org to
api.stopforumspam.org

the only time registration will not be allowed is if API is ignored if it can't be reach

the new link api.stopforumspam.org is more reliable

I turned off email verification a couple of months back, and in 36 hours I had 2K attempted registrations blocked by spam-o-matic :D Since then spam-o blocks about 50 a day and I will maybe see 1 spam post per day.

i've used it for over 1 year now, and had 10 spams
i only got those spams when the api went down on at stopforumspam.com
I read their forums and they suggested to change the API link in
functions_ghsom.php from stopforumspam.com to api.stopforumspam.com
as the old one is no longer being updated or not as up-to-date as
api.stopforumspam.com is update regularly

this is the actual post

My spam is out of control. I am using Akistmet and that is helping somewhat with the forums but doing nothing on the blogs. I have human verification, and email signup verification activated. My blogs are getting roughly 3000 spam posts a week. WTH is a person to do at this point???

I'm getting loads, lucky they get moderated. It's annoying really because some VBulletin forums I know doesn't have the spam mod on they're forum and they only have the email validation link and they get no spam at all.

CAG CheechDogg 10-24-2012 03:03 AM

@killerford...

I used to have wordpress as my CMS and I would get tons of spammers , I switched over to joomla and added some good extensions to prevent spam and I no longer get the spammers on my forums.

Wordpress attracts a lot of spammers because of the blog references all over their scripts and what not.

You might want to try joomla my Friend.

XRumer beat that long ago. If bots were trying to register at your site, they would succeed.

It is elegant and simple, no bells or whistles. The sharpest knives are the quietest.

fechten 10-31-2012 02:31 PM

Over the last 24 hours there seems to have been a problem with the StopForumSpam site and that has let in tons of spammers :(

From the logs:

Unable to connect to StopForumSpam.com. This is probably due to some temporary problems on their website: Unable to check. User passed to vBulletin registration system per your settings ...

Is it humans? Or bots?

Your time setting on "Spammers Suck?" I use 25 seconds. Low time settings let bots through.
