vBulletin 4.2.0

Since the release of this is now only days away, and the Public Beta has now been released, I have added 4.2.0 as a choice in the version dropdown for release threads.

If you are releasing a 4.2 modification, please make sure you choose that option. If you have already released one, you can update it to 4.2.0

As part of your modification, you might also consider setting the product dependancies, to prevent it actually being loaded by pre 4.2 installations (unless of course its compatible with older versions).

CaneInsider 05-19-2012 05:47 PM

What type of features are being upgraded for 4.2?

BirdOPrey5 05-19-2012 08:42 PM

The features were listed in the announcement: https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/show...-PROD-INSTALLS)

The main features are:
  • New Activity Stream
  • New Navigation Manager
  • Several popular mods now built in

Boofo 05-19-2012 08:48 PM

You mean Paul M's popular mods now built in.

BirdOPrey5 05-19-2012 08:50 PM

Tomato tomato.

Yes. Which other mods do you feel should be built in?

Gemma 05-20-2012 07:10 PM

I upgraded my site the other day, quite impressed by this release which isn't something I've been able to say before about a vB4 release.

cjh1471 05-20-2012 07:36 PM

One of the most popular mods of all time should be integrated into the actually build of vBulletin :p post thank you :p

8thos 05-20-2012 09:51 PM

If they really want to kill the game they should ask if they can add some of BirdOPrey5's awesome addons. He's my favorite vb.org mod author. Alot of his modifications are vital.

Birdofprey is awesome, nice guy too.

Paul, after VB 4.2 which of your mods will need to be disabled or uninstalled as they are already included? I use a good amount of your mods and do not want conflicts.

I believe any of Paul's mods you already have installed will be disabled during the upgrade process.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Valter 05-21-2012 03:20 PM

True.

Making those mods part of the default package was a very good move on vb 's part as they were very popular and widely used.

If vBulletin asked you to submit some of your mods to include into their official product, which ones would you choose?

BirdOPrey5 05-21-2012 06:16 PM

If VB wanted any of my free mods they could have them in exchange for getting my name in the Special Thanks and Contributions From listing in Admin CP.

That said even my most popular mods have only a fraction of the installs as many of Paul's mods.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for any of mine.

You are selling yourself short. All Topics is my favorite modification on vBulletin and when I had moved over to xenForo it was the number one modification that I missed. There are people on xenforo right now begging for coders to create an All Topic modification. This modification is just plain genius man.

BirdOPrey5 05-21-2012 06:49 PM

It's an acquired taste.

sticky 05-21-2012 07:59 PM

What is all topics? Global threads?

Similar but basically allows threads from multiple forums to be visible in other forums.
All Topics / Master Forums

It was the mod that I couldn't find that pushed me to learn VB coding to begin with.

You are taking us down the rabbit hole with this one :) Perhaps in a good way. digitalpoint's Sphinx needs to be integrated into the default package the one VB provided is not good.

linuxwhy 05-23-2012 02:01 AM

As I remember, IE 6 is not supported anymore from this version on.

I want to change page in the CMS forum page. Can you give me?

I've become my problem

Post Release: here another revenue plugin integrated in the core... Why? Who really wants it? How it is possible that VB guys continue to introduce revenue plugins by default? It seems they want to gain more money from referrals than from sells of VB.

I really hope to see more other popular plugins introduced in the next subversion (don't want to wait a 4.3). It's so simple, they just can look at vbulletin.org and see what is there. Or they just can look at other boards.. A lack that I really want to see is the integration of Gravatar system, it's free and worldwide used and also already integrated in many other boards but VB.

Hi,

Paul's 'Member Visit Tracking' mod was used (on my board) prior to vB4.2 upgrade. After the upgrade the 'Members who have Visited' mod is disabled by vB4.2. Does the mod need to be enabled again?

Thank you

No don't turn on the old mod, use the new vB Visiting Members settings in ACP->Settings->Options->Visiting Members

IE7 is also unsupported. They didn't go out of the way to break things on ie6/7 but they won't fix issues that only happen in ie 6 or 7.

You seem to have answered your own question. Don't forget vBulletin is a business, any way to make additional profit without upsetting customers too much will no doubt be considered.

I say this as an individual with experience in business, my position with vb support does not make me privy to ANY official VB business deals.

Thank you, nhawk. :)

I did enable the mod on test on forum. Is this potentially a problem?

I honestly don't know. But the new feature in vB is the same as the mod, so I'd just leave it turned off. Perhaps even uninstall it because it's a built in feature now.

I'd try uninstalling on a test site first. I don't think it will cause a problem, but I'd do it that way just to be safe.

Boofo 05-23-2012 05:18 PM

You can safely uninstall any of Paul's add-on mods that are now built into vb.

Alfa1 05-23-2012 07:49 PM

I would much appreciate it if instruction on how to integrate addons with the activity stream would be posted. Several addon developers are looking for this information, so they can update their addons to vb4.2 and get content from their addon into the activity stream.

Weren't there a handful of hacky things to fix issues on IE6/7 for earlier versions actually causing issues on IE8/9 though? I can imagine any of those will be removed if they already haven't been.

There isn't a datamanager class for this?
