vB Connect

why don't develop a vB Connect to optimize the vB network since it is so huge across million of sites ;)

so the idea is use a membership shared among all sites which are powered by vB, just like another facebook/ twitter connect

Reycer 09-24-2011 04:12 PM

I could see that posing a HUGE security risk. I wouldn't want that for my forum, but that may just be me.

The concept seems nice, but there are a few issues with it. I surely do not want to give out member data to third parties. I think thats not good for their privacy. Competing sites could use such network to find your member data and invite them all.
The new facebook app has similar features, as it suggests other vbulletin sites to your members.
Mind that vbulletins mother company owns a very large number of forums and sites that compete with vbulletin customers. So that conflict of interest makes it more difficult.

I do like this idea and have thought about it for a while- but it would require a big company to implement with the right hardware that it is always up and relatively fast, something like Google or Facebook.

Obviously this would be a feature that admin would be able to enable or disable at their discretion but personally I would join a lot more forums if there was a "1 click" way to do so that would automatically sign me up with my preferred username, centralized password, email, and whatever other info I choose to share. Plus the system would verify I wasn't a spammer so I would get immediate access without having to "confirm" my account.

from the other view, one banned = banned by all forums.

i'm thinking something similar as Disqus

update: i found this pretty similar but not very sure how does it work yet
vbNetwork - share forums with other boards

BirdOPrey5 09-25-2011 09:51 AM

vbNetwork mod, which I use, shares 1 or more forums (as in forums on your board) with other boards... No users are shared, posts from other boards are treated like guest posts on your board with an @Domain added to the username from the originating board.

Is that supposed to be positive?

No offense, on some forums getting banned has nothing to do with beeing a bad user, but those forums having horrible admins. I mean, buying a software doesn't make you a decent admin at all. And there are some admins out there which i for sure do not want to hold any power over my users.

100% true

BirdOPrey5 09-25-2011 02:09 PM

Banning wouldn't be across all forums...

Perhaps there could be an option where an admin could choose to honor another forum's bans but it certainly wouldn't be by default.

souperman 09-28-2011 07:33 AM

There's already openid, facebook, and google accounts. Great idea, but it's already out there, just not in vb. I with they could add more options besides facebook. Google is a google alternative since pretty much everyone has a google account.

I think the idea is that it connects vB sites, not Facebook/Google/Whathaveyou to vB sites. The idea is to connect that community with each other in a more integrated way. So it doesn't really exist yet.

Depends who they've pissed off! A banned member on one site doesnt necessarily mean they are a bad egg all over as some admins/mods* have a snobbish attitude that makes you bolt the gate!

* Different forum software :p

What about someone like me that has one server and 2 VB Forums that are on 2 different URL's but I want them to log in one time and have access to both? I can control the permissions in the CP for the second one so the normal registered users could not see the threads but the ones with permission can. This would keep them from having to register 2 times.

Basically I would like to have one user data base with one login to both forums.

Is there a hack or mod to do this? Or can some one please tell me how to do it!

Although it's a beta if you read the ENTIRE thread and do all the little fixes suggested it's pretty stable: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...hreadid=254197

I'm satisfied with BOP's network. I don't need all that extra stuff.

I wish more sites would join the network though. I feel like the odd man out.

An extremely good point. If one admin takes a personal dislike to a member, it should not necessarily influence the admin of another site that the member belongs to. However sadly, this is happening.

And as the said member is banned, it is hard for him to debate the ban by either party, despite breaking no rules on either forum. and may have to post on other forums to refute the ban that the admins have no influence over.

One would think that an admin would not do such a thing, but it sadly is not the case.

Thank you RobbieZ for your enlightened post. AL.

Perhaps if the reputation was not so bad then more sites would show a willingness to join the "network" but when the admins on the network abuse it, then people will not be so keen to join.

The basic concept seems like a good idea and it seems to work, but cross banning of members who have broken no rules by the various admins as a "favour" to the other admins actually destroys the creditability of the network. And of the admins concerned.

I have influence on some sites that have shown interest in joining, but I cannot in good conscience recommend the network as it currently exists to any one.

8thos 11-30-2011 03:07 AM

I didn't ban you so I don't see why your quoting me.

I deleted the last three replies, please keep it clean Big Al and Octavius.
