Attachment Thumbnail image file type

When I attach a png image file the resulting thumbnail is a jpg. Is there an option to change this? Or has someone created a mod for it? I'd like to maintain transparency on png/gif thumbnails...

There is no option to change this. I don't know of a mod that does this either - have you tried a search?

jimsflies 06-09-2011 04:08 PM

Yeah, I've tried looking here and haven't had any luck. I'm surprised no one else has noticed this.

vBulletin doesn't convert *.png and *.gif files to *.jpg the only thing it does is that it renames the attachment to *.attach and it creates a thumbnail (if you have it enabled, *.jpg) which is being renamed to *.thumb. So I'm pretty sure that thumbnail option confused you! :)

Ok...looks like I was wrong about the problem here. The images are indeed png with transparency. However when I display the thumbs with the attach bbcode, they are losing the transparency...even when I right click and save the image to my machine, the transparency is gone.

I'm not sure why that is, how could the attach bbcode change the transparency of the image?

Frosty 06-11-2011 03:41 AM

How big are your *.png and *.gif files? When I say how big, I mean on their resolution. If they aren't over 640x480, feel free to turn off the "Create a thumbnail" option in the Attachment Manager or those two extensions.

As there's no need for a thumbnail if they aren't big.

What I'm realizing now is that somehow the attach bbcode is somehow making the background not be transparent any longer. Any idea what would cause the bbcode itself to change the pic?

Paste a copy of the BB Code Jim? Off the top of my head if the .png is actually staying transparent then it should have the same background as the <div> class it's in.... post the BB Code so we can have a look ;).

I'm going nuts here... lol. Now I'm back to thinking that the png thumbs are losing transparency. I'm going to upload a png with this post to see what happens here....should be a blue ball with transparency around it...

Ok...so they are also not transparent here on vb.org as you can see white around the thumbnail above. Here is a link to the full size version uploaded here to vb.org....notice there is no white box around it:

try increasing the thumbnail size or disabling the thumbnail... if large images are annoying for you then keep the attachment size small... or either try incresing the thumbnail quality

jimsflies 06-12-2011 10:51 AM

Aware of any mods that can set the thumbnail size per attachment type?

Frosty 06-12-2011 01:21 PM

As I already said, all thumbnails will be *.jpg, as system automatically creates a *.jpg thumbnail from a *.png or *.gif image. Which means you'll have to disable thumbnails for *.png and *.gif via Attachment Options in your Admin Panel.

jimsflies 06-12-2011 02:51 PM

Frosty...I thought before you said that vBulletin doesn't convert *.png and *.gif files to *.jpg?

Turning thumbnails off for png's is one option however I make use of both thumbnails and full size attachments on my forum so I'm looking into more alternatives. I'm sure that for me, there would be some sort of negative consequence with other parts of my site if I don't have a thumbnail to display.

Frosty 06-12-2011 04:49 PM

It doesn't convert images that you upload. But if you decide to have thumbnails for them, it creates a thumbnail which is a JPG!
