Welcome to the new year of spam!!

I had over 100 spam bot registrations yesterday! I guess they finally broke reCAPTCHA™... Time for Question & Answer Verification!

Lynne 01-08-2011 06:33 PM

Yep - http://www.allspammedup.com/2010/01/...ptcha-cracked/

We switched over to Q&A about three months ago when we noticed an increase in Spam. We hardly get any now.

How many questions are you guys using? I added four... Think I should add more?

TNCclubman 01-08-2011 06:48 PM

noticed in the past 2 weeks, ive been getting my question/answers cracked in a day. Whats going on?

Are they having humans answer our questions and uploading the answers, plus our sites registration link on some sort of spammer database they all share?

Roms 01-08-2011 06:58 PM

Just had two registrations since changed to Q&A and posted this... I'm sure they are spammers. Human I guess? uggg

We went from Q&A to capcha a while ago, looks like I may have to move back. Got a large increase in bot registrations this week.

Brandon Sheley 01-08-2011 07:21 PM

I wish I get bots D:

Usually, I make all new users become active before they are put into a new group which gives them more benefits. They have a limitation of characters before they submit. Once they hit a certain amount of post + activity on the board. They will be taken automatically to a new usergroups. However, we have staffs that reviews the board to ensure they are not spamming to gain the status.

Example: They may only use up to 400 characters and must have an average of 5 posts per day. An average of 30 minutes active out of an hour without being idle as well.

Usually, when you get mad bots. They intend to post non-sense.

I have 12 Questions and Answers. More is better.

I add questions periodically. If I think of something and I've got the time, I'll add it. I've got somewhere around 40 at this point.

I too have been busy cleaning out a few sites lately from attacks..

Some clever people out there designing these bots, i would think they could make some real money putting their efforts into something constructive.

They actually make good money by spamming- otherwise they wouldn't be wasting their time. It amazes me people continue to "fall for" or "buy" things that are spammed... as long as the market remains, so will the spammers.

Paul M 01-09-2011 08:45 PM

Its not always a case of people "falling for it" - sometimes the items are actually useful or something people want. I can think of at least two things i have bought that I origianlly saw in a spam post on our forum.
