What is Sphinx

Can someone please explain exactly what Sphinx does and what are the benefits or cons for using this?

Thanks

Have you tried google - http://sphinxsearch.com/about/sphinx/

Sphinx is an open source full text search server, designed from the ground up with performance, relevance (aka search quality), and integration simplicity in mind.
Pros... fast, fast, fast.
Cons.... can only run if you have your own dedicated server

RichieBoy67 12-22-2010 03:10 PM

I know it is a search server but I wasn't sure exactly how it relates to VBulletin... Is it meant to replace the built in search function for very large forums or is meant to provide a search function for a whole site?

I have spent some time researching on Google but most of what I found was really far from what I was looking for. Seeing that there is a whole forum dedicated to it I figured it would be a great place to at least find out what it is exactly..

Thanks for your reply..

It is meant to replace vbulletin's search. You use either vbulletin's search OR sphinx search.

Or VPS. ;)

Does anyone have this up and running so I can test it? I have an application this would be perfect for..

Thanks

digitalpoint uses it on his forums. This is for forums with a LOT of posts.

Boofo 12-23-2010 02:55 PM

But he uses the vb integration that we wrote which will only work with Sphinx 0.9.9 and above.

Lynne 12-23-2010 03:18 PM

Sure, but it's still Sphinx. If you just want to see how quick it is on a big site, that's a good site to see it put to use.

Boofo 12-23-2010 03:27 PM

True. I just thought you were talking about the vb integration mod from the com. I'll go stand in the corner now.

Could be, but he didn't specify that, he just said he wanted to see Sphinx running on a site.

And while you are in the corner, can you please plan my Christmas dinner menu? I've gotta do that today but haven't had the time yet. :)

Boofo 12-23-2010 03:58 PM

We're not gonna meet at IHOP for xmas dinner this year? :(

Something is wrong with my search engine so I'm looking up how to fix it or replace it.

final kaoss 06-17-2011 04:50 PM

Or use google custom site search.

Only works on things google can see.

final kaoss 06-17-2011 06:04 PM

Very little forums do not want google to index their content, so this is a pretty good option.

Yea, but you can't search your private content (at all). Staff forums, etc.

I'd rather buy Sphinx. It's only $25 right?

M.Kay 08-19-2011 04:37 AM

what about the DB table, which are used for VB search. Can I empty them after successfully running sphinx?

kevdod 01-25-2012 06:00 PM

in addition to google and sphinx, yapmap site search mod is another search option

Mecho 12-11-2012 01:14 PM

too bad that there is no 100% working one for 3.8.x
