XenForo - Has the vBulletin / IPB killer arrived ?
 

Hey,

I was wondering if any of you have tried out XenForo - The new forum software being developed by Kier Darby, the former lead developer of vBulletin.

Although the software is still in Alpha my first impression was that this can develop into a very polished and sophisticated forum software.

However I found the style to be a bit too minimalistic. I hope it will be changed significantly before launch.

I wonder if we will be getting to try out any beta to check it out.

What do you guys think. ?

I hope they have the backend sorted out as that's what determines if a product will live or die. The frontend can always change.

"early adopters sale as well" sound a bit like VB so if they've a similar price and the same licensing conditions - dunno if people will switch over.

Yes I wonder what the price will be...I dont think it will be as much as vB/IPB although its looking like it will be better than both in an unmodified state.

However I think the biggest strength of vB lies in vB.org. There are so many good mods available here for free. (and styles as well) that it becomes impossible to go over to any other software. (for now)

Looks like a cheap Vbulletin to me :X

and about the "Admin CP" who cares about the way it looks as long as it works there is no need for "fancy" panels

Kier and Mike.. interesting. Looks like AVForums plans to adopt it when it's released.

To be honest, I'd rather move to something that has those two behind it.. than stay with IB (:

I had a look at that forum and it looks very nice. I liked what I saw.

Will it be free or paid?

They wrote that it will be commercial

xenForo will be a commercial license, visible source.

I agree it does resemble vB in some ways, which is infact very good. But overall it gives a impression of a different and more sophisticated software than vBulletin.

And yes I will agree right now vB is the best, but this looks like potentially a serious threat to vBulletin to me. Much bigger than IPB ever was.

Apparently I wasn't worth being let in on the private preview. :(

It still has quite a way to go if they are going to price it comparable to vb and ipb. That would mean it would need a workable CMS and blogs. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

Ok after signing up and doing a few tests its just the same for me a "few" changes i can see

wow i love the work ..not so much the skin they have now ....needs alittle easier to read but i support the project ....

I would love a digital download shop and wp/joomla integrated ...

I see this differently. Ofcourse the backend is of an utmost importance, but let me tell you that in today's software-world the frontend UI/UX is a HUGE factor in making a product successful. Remarkable enough, Internet Brands doesn't seem to have any insight in this, seeing what they did with the UI of vBulletin4. It is so unbelievable bad... and then to realize they charge a premium price for this.

Our company and foundation will keep a serious eye on XenForo. Upgrading to the unstable and dysfunctional vB4 is no option: our pre-sale purchase is still living on our local harddisk. Zipped that is. After 8 months Internet Brands still are unable to provide/convince. A big shame what they did to the reputation of this once outstanding/trusted software package.

They have lost -amongst hundreds of others- one of their biggest promotors: me. If Kier&Mike can come up with integrated Blogs and CMS I am sold.

A CMS and/or blog,are pretty far down the pike, I'm sure. xenForo is very much in its infancy, and that's where their focus is right now - producing a full-featured, and stable, forum platform.

^^ Then why do they have that "home" button on the navbar... and what will people do for the homepage if they dont even give something like vBadvanced.

I for one will never be comfortable with something like joomla or wordpress for a homepage as they dont integrate well with the forum.

And if they provided a bridge? ;)

Definitely we are as soon as it has all the modifications we need. And it's a lot.
However, XF has been coded in such a way that plugins will be very easy to create. I have seen a demo and it's laughably easy.
At the same time is is very feature rich.
Hardly surprising when you have the world's most qualified forum developers using the latest coding techniques to start from scratch. And they have gone back to the drawing board. For example, there are no private messages, but instead private conversions which you can invite other people to view.
The permissions system has been built from scratch to cater for the difficulties of private forums and banned users.
And Ajax has been used to the maximum to do things like discussion watching, message liking, spam killing etc. in nicely animated overlay popups. Oh and their spam killer has an undo button! And you can scroll the page nav left and right (with a nice animation) to get to the page you want.

The upgrade from vB to XF will create 301 redirects and passwords will transfer seamlessly.

I have been very sad at the way IB have been destroying vBulletin and our business and the livelihoods of several people depend upon the forum software we use, so the strategic decision on what direction to take has not been taken lightly.
We're with vBulletin probably for the next six months at least.
But the world of forum software has moved on and vB has been well and truly left behind.

wow i have had intergration with wordpress or joomla is not bad ..if anything just logons. I actually still running my board with 3.8 ...i bought four but too many bugs to put it on live board ..

I have noticed that that forum has been full almost all day today and that is very remarkable for a new forum.

What Internet Brands didn't realise was that the savvy vBulletin admins had loyalty to the people developing the product more than the product itself.
So when Kier, Scott, Mike and the others left, so did the loyalty of the savvy vBulletin admin.
I expressed concern at the time, but Ray's reply was that they had not lost experience from the team. :eek::eek::eek::eek:
A large number (if not the majority) of the savvy vBulletin admin are still with version 3.
Those people, myself included, are excited to see XenForo because we know that Kier and Mike know what they are doing. Looking at their software, it is patently obvious.

After checking it out and read spinball posts and pms all day :D

Please tell me it has photo gallerry built in with photo tagging and also a friend feeds that shows what your friends do like "became friends" "added photos" "posted on another friends wall" etc. Get with the social media that is out there.

This isn't just another fly by night forum script to make a quick buck. This was made by legit people with creative minds. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Do you realise, this is what vB4 would have been like if Kier had had his way and been allowed a free hand. Infact it would probably have been something better as more developers and resourses would have been availible for the job.

Anyway, it was not to be and we ended up with the vB4 "Gold" instead. :P Lets see how it goes from here.
