Advanced @User Tagging Mod: What is it?

DragonByte Technologies is proud to present [DBTech] Advanced @User Tagging.
This version introduces several major new features that users have requested, and some others we were unable to fit in v1.0.

The @user Tagging mod is designed to increase activity on your forum by allowing members to mention each other in posts when talking about them.
This is done in a very easy way, very similar to how Twitter mentions people. We use @ ; as the tags, so for instance you could say:
----
This new mod from @Dragonbyte Tech; is pretty cool.
----
The ?@DragonByte Tech;? Will become a link to the DragonByte Tech users profile, it will also inform DragonByte Tech they had been mentioned, and link to the relevant thread/post via a new area in the profile section, as well as a new tab in the shoutbox.

It also allows members to ?tag? the thread for specific other members by inputting their usernames in the tag box above the posts of the thread.

This is a great way to increase your forum activity with no extra admin input required ? people will start to mention posts/threads to their friends, which will increase the amount of posting. This is especially useful of forums which have an international contingent (so threads posted in during the night for some of your members don't go overlooked) or forums which have a lot of posts/threads each day ? again to make sure that a post a person might want to read doesn't get lost in the crowd.

Known issue: There's a problem with matching usernames if @ is present in the post.

Will post back when issue is resolved.

jorge_kai 05-17-2010 09:42 PM

it sounds great but i have a problem... when installing de xml...

Either /var/www/vhosts/charlamania.com/httpdocs/dbtech/usertag/install/core.php or /var/www/vhosts/charlamania.com/httpdocs/dbtech/usertag/install/finalise.php is missing!

DragonByte Tech 05-17-2010 09:59 PM

That's been fixed, sorry about that :)

davepurcell 05-17-2010 10:46 PM

I've installed this, the settings are all good in the admin and the tag extra users box thing appears but actually @USERNAME doesn't tag them, link them, notify them etc...
Any ideas.

DragonByte Tech 05-17-2010 10:51 PM

Aforementioned problem has been fixed, all downloads from this post should be good to go:)

@dave: The Tag Users box in the showthread, you're not supposed to use @ there. It's just usernames as you'd type them normally :)
The only time @username; is needed is when you're Mentioning people in posts.

Hope that resolves your problem :)

davepurcell 05-17-2010 10:55 PM

I know that. I was saying that is there to say it'd most likely installed properly.

I'm using @username in posts and it doesn't tag them, link them or notify them that they've been tagged.
Maybe I wasn't clear?

DragonByte Tech 05-17-2010 11:01 PM

Did you use a semicolon to terminate the tag?
So it'd be like @davepurcell; or @dragonbyte tech; or @belazor; etc.

We had to add the semicolon because that's the only illegal character in usernames ;)

Taurus1 05-18-2010 02:52 AM

This is really something I can use. Thank you. I am looking into also buying the pro version. Although I get this error after installation when I go into a thread:

Fatal error: Class 'vB_Template' not found in /home/thebull/public_html/forums/dbtech/usertag/hooks/postbit_display_complete.php on line 9

I hope you can help. Thanks!

ctrlbrk 05-18-2010 04:03 AM

I am quite interested in this... but...

a) I don't think I want the Thread tagging (separate tagging, not @). Can it easily be disabled?

b) I think using the semicolon is going to be too much for dumb users :) What about the option of making it something more like BBcode, like [@username] and that way there is also a toolbar icon (like a megaphone -> shout icon), and the dialog input box can just ask "username to shout at" or whatever. Just an idea.

c) I see on your forum you're already considering group/category shouts, that sounds like a very good idea.

d) Kind of a follow-up to (b) now that I think about it :) My forum usernames have this regex "^[A-Z0-9 ]+$", with that in mind I am wondering if there is a simpler way as to not require the semicolon to activate the tagging...

I believe that has been fixed now, re-download the zip and re-upload all the files :)

You'd have to remove the contents of the taglist template. That should kill it, and you didn't even have to use fire! :)

A toolbar icon is a good idea, thanks! I'll write that down for future versions.

You still have a space in your username, which means matching on space won't work.
Also, not every forum has that regexp ;) To get it working properly, we had to step away from a simple regexp and onto more advanced parsing, so I think our best bet is to go with that BBCode toolbar icon :)

In other news, a small fix for HTML characters not appearing properly in thread tags (& being shown as & etc) has been released :)

Taurus1 05-18-2010 10:24 AM

Awesome!! All good now! Thanks for the fast update. I am tagging....

EDIT: I tried to tag all my staff in my Admin forum informing them of this new mod. So I added all their usernames in the editor like this: @username; @username; etc. After posting, I see the their names are now linked to their userprofiles. But there is no mention of the post under the "Mention" tab on their profiles though. The profile page also don't finish loading. Can you please advise.

Thank you.

Does the postbit still update with incremented "mentions" count?

Additionally, can you open the dbtech_usertag_mention table and see if the mentions inserted properly there?

I don't see any count in the postbit for 'mentions' in the postbit.

Sorry, where to check this? :o

TheInsaneManiac 05-19-2010 06:30 AM

I don't like having to type out @username and then having to include a Semicolon...

Also, you didn't cache any of the templates in your modification.

Is it possible to make it similar to Twitter with just @username?

Sorry, where to check this? :o

the table would be checked in phpmyadmin or a similar mysql tool. Sorry I can't be of more help atm but I am currently without a net connection :(

sorry, Twitter style is not possible because ; is the only way we can detect the end of am username.

I'll look into template caching, thanks :)

Would just like to let you know that this is now working perfectly!! And it is really awesome!! I would recommend this to everyone!

And thanks again for your great service mate!!

jorge_kai 05-19-2010 06:41 PM

fantastic, installed!!

DragonByte Tech 05-21-2010 11:05 PM

DragonByte Technologies is proud to present version 1.1 of [DBTech] Advanced @User Tagging.
This version introduces several major new features that users have requested, and some others we were unable to fit in v1.0.

Statistics Page: Display which users are the most active, both at tagging and being tagged. Same with mentions. This is a great way to encourage your members to utilise the feature and increase activity!

Post Previews: See the context of the post you were mentioned in! (Hard limit of 20 characters either way in Lite version)

BBCode Integration: A button for mentioning has been added to the BBCode toolbar – Users no longer need to remember the @; command.

Change look of Mentioned usernames: Allows you to use BBCode to make mentioned usernames stand out. Only underline is available in Lite.

Per Forum Settings: Allows you to turn tagging on/off per forum (disables the tag cloud) and mentioning per forum (Disables mention notifications from that forum)

We hope you enjoy this new version :)

Morrus 05-22-2010 02:20 PM

This is in the 3.8 section of vBulletin.org and the header at the top of this thread says it's for 3.8.4, but the text file in the zip package says "Advanced @User Tagging (Lite) requires at least vBulletin 4.0.2. It may not function correctly in vBulletin 4.0.1 or lower."

Which version of vBulletin is this for? I'm considering getting the pro version, but I run 3.8.4.

Morrus 05-22-2010 05:17 PM

OK, ignore the above - it works on 3.8.4.

It's a fantastic system! I've nominated it for MOTM and purchased the Pro version; this is a really good idea. There are a couple of oddities (such as only counting the first mention in a post, so if you mention more than one person it doesn't appear in the Mentions tab on their profile), and the Statistics page seems to confuse mentions and tags (someone is listed as top tag when all he has done is mention, for example), but I'm sure these will get ironed out.

Also, the option to not show the @ in the Admin CP resets to "Yes" every time you save the settings, and if you put the tag box below the thread it simply disappears.

And an option for users to opt-out would be great; I've had a couple complain about being bugged by thread mentions when they're not interested in following them.

Small typo in the file, it's been fixed. The affected file is dbtech/usertag/hooks/misc_start.php, thanks for reporting :)

I don't see why we can't add that for the next feature release ^.^

Thanks for your support, it means a lot :D

Morrus 05-22-2010 07:12 PM

Fantastic, thanks!

One minor phrase suggestion (very much not vital) is to clarify the headings on the Statistics page. Where it says "Top Mentions" and "Top Tags" it might be clearer to say "Most Frequent Mentioners" and "Most Frequent Taggers".

Not a major issue at all; it's just a clarification thing so that folks are clear as to what the table is showing them.

I did search in phrases to see if I could change it, but it lokos like it's hard-coded.

Did I mention that I think this is a really good idea? I don't know why nobody thought of it before, but it's one of those "this is how things should work" ideas.

Thanks for the suggestion, will definetely look to fix that for the next version.

Thanks for the compliment on the idea as well - it's rare the designer ever gets any credit in this game for coming up with the ideas that make a difference haha!(Can you tell that's me? =P)

Hi there, I upgraded to the new one. But now in my ACP on the left with the Usertag settings....(Forum Manager and Settings) I get a database error when I click any of those. I also do not have the little icon (speaker) on my editor toolbar.
Sorry for always having problems.

EDIT: When I click on Test this product, I get this "The product called'DragonByte Tech: Advanced User Tagging (Lite)' does not have any Template-Modifications, is not active or all Template-Modifications for this product have been disabled. Please go back and check your input."

Don't know if this has any relevance!?

nascartr 05-23-2010 05:18 AM

One problem I see is that there are no permission settings. Someone that is not logged in can go about tagging members anytime they want and I'm afraid that could be annoying to certain members if the right guest come along and started playing around.

Taurus1 05-23-2010 06:19 AM

I also now get this when posting something new:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/thebull/public_html/forums/dbtech/usertag/hooks/postdata_presave.php on line 53

Can you try re-uploading all files and re-importing the XML file?
It sounds like the installer script didn't run properly, maybe a re-import will fix it :)
If not, please post the database error and I'll investigate :)

You're totally right, this will be addressed in the next version, thanks!

Hmm, that's odd. Can you show a screenshot of your forum manager setup? The one with actual forums, not the usertag one.

I don't see why that should time out for you then..
It's most likely not able to find the parent forum and keep looping infinitely, but according to that it should have no problems doing so.

Did you try what else I put in my previous post?

Morrus 05-23-2010 04:53 PM

Just a pie-in-the-sky idea for the future - would email notifications be a good idea? It would have to be controllable by the member in question, of course.

In addition, does it follow permissions (I'm thinking people the user has ignored)?

Taurus1 05-23-2010 05:38 PM

I did, and I don't get that fatal error anymore, but the two options in my ACP still gives me an internal server error. So I cannot set it up.

EDIT: And I still dont have the little speaker on my editor toolbar.

Email is planned :)
It doesn't follow Ignore no, but the Pro vrsion has an option to only allow notifications from friends.

Can you check your Apache server logs for anything that might indicate the cause of the Internal Server Error?

As for the speaker icon, can you check your BBCode manager to see that the BBCode exists?
It's [MENTION] :)

Checking the logs now. Will get back on that.

Yes the [MENTION] BBCode is there.

EDIT: OK, I managed to fix the Internal Server Error, it seems to have been a permissions issue in my FTP.

So now I do get this error in some threads again:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method vB_Template::fetch_template_raw() in /home/thebull/public_html/forums/vbseo/includes/functions_vbseo_hook.php on line 25

And the BBCode is still not showing. Thanks!

DragonByte Tech 05-23-2010 11:58 PM

If you click Edit on the BBCode, does the image path show?
If yes, then it would appear that the image can't be found. Can you link me to your forums and I'll be able to tell you whether I did something wrong here ;p

The vBSEO error is a bug in vBSEO, they don't use the correct method to determine whether it's running on vB3 or vB4.
They need to use the following code
PHP Code:

if (intval($vbulletin->versionnumber) == 3

to check for vB3.
Please report it on the vBSEO forums and they should be able to fix it :)

OK, I will report it. Is it not possible for me to edit that myself though?

When clicking on 'edit' inside all the options there is a "Button Image (Optional)" field. In there is this : "dbtech/usertag/images/mention.png"

I had to disable the mod otherwise I will get those VBSEO errors. But let me know when you want to check it, and I will enable it again. My URL is:

Thanks again for your great service!!

Don't think so, I think vBSEO files are encrypted or obfuscated.

Not that it matters until the vBSEO issue is resolved, but I'd still like to know if I was doing it wrong ;)
