Why still no marketplace?

I have been gone for a bit, overseas, and I just realized that vb still has no marketplace to speak of. I mean even the apple store has paid and free apps. Why cant this place?

mikey1991 04-18-2010 10:29 PM

Everything is free, that's NOT a good thing?

You can post requests for paid services in the requests for paid services section

trackpads 04-18-2010 10:54 PM

Of course, but lets face it, sometimes paying for something gets you better support and helps get people to work on larger and bigger projects. Vbadvanced, Photopost, Dolphin, Phpfox etc all are paid programs and are all very very good.

I also think alot of the coders should get something, heck even if its a dollar. And if would get other software companies more of a reason to get their products compatible with VB.

Thanks again,

That's an interesting point. I wonder what would happen if dev's could license mods on an app-like model. Free versions for those who wanted, a few dollars for others or pro versions. With bulk you may see enough revenue to get some really amazing mods made.

If the OP hadn't bought up that (relatively new) App Store I probably wouldn't, but I gotta agree. I'd pay $1 for most of my mods, and another $1 for updates. An interesting thought.

As it is, developers have to jump through hoops to even get people to pay for support - like the 200th "I get error x! What can I do?".

I agree, something like the appstore would be amazing here. Seems pretty doable in my opinion, but that's going off of the way I'd code it.

Apps are boring....i'd rather call them mods. Much better. That FaceBook connect thing looks good. I wonder what else they're going to add to vB4 or maybe even 5. :p

There is strong opposition from some quarters (esp vb.org staff) to allow paid apps at vb.org.

Maybe vbulletin solutions could open another domain where all these paid apps can be bought under one umbrella. How about vbulletin.net ?

Upon what do you base that exactly ?

that's not true

I would say that almost every staff member here would like to see some form of marketplace.

(note: I'm just assuming from past communications; do not assume that I'm speaking on behalf of any person or group)

An appstore-like system has been mentioned before with no success. I'm not sure if transfer of money would ever be involved - as this would require lawyers, new policies, new management, etc. IB hasn't said anything to us regarding what direction they want us to take.

Personally, I would love to see an appstore-like system where everyone can benefit. ie. IB, customers, designers, and developers.

vborg has been in limbo since IB took over; we are simply waiting .... waiting ... waiting...

I like this idea myself it's only right to compensate the developer for there time putting an app together.I myself have a android device and the app store is amazing and inexpensive i paid for apps that are worth .99 and some i paid for 5.00.

I guess vb.org can follow the same requirements that Android store use, to offer there 3rd party developer to host there app on there store rather it's free or paid...

And another neat option will be in admincp we can view the store and see what app's is available and we can choose to install it rather it's free or paid we can install it straight from the store.

just a thought :D

A start might just be allowing for a forum to be created which allowed commercial mods to be advertised.

I thought vB.org was independent of IB?

IB own the domain, and we run on their server. A couple of the staff here are also IB staff.

Oh well in that case I'm sure we can all imagine what's going to happen here....

Paul M 04-23-2010 07:38 AM

Im sure you can imagine a lot of things, but this is hardly news, its been this way for 8+ years I think. :)

Wow that seems like a lot of waiting :( What are you waiting on??

vbenhancer 05-15-2010 11:56 PM

some ways are better than others... i prefer vb.org without any commercial stuff... what would be good is a vb.net, which is missing... the .net is more for commercial goals, like coders/designers directory, marketplace etc...

:)
