Popup Private Messaging for vBulletin 3.8
 

Updated 12-19-2010 to add all the full version features to the free version. There's no longer a full version, just this free one with everything.

Popup Private Messaging is a useful (and neat!) modification for your vBulletin 3.8 forum. Instead of redirecting a user to a separate "Compose Message" page when they try to send a private message, a "popup" private message form is displayed without taking them away from the page they're viewing. It intelligently replaces every single PM link on your forum, CMS or blog without any template edits or plugins that mess with your templates. It's loaded with features and has been tested with IE 8, FireFox 3.6, Opera 10.10, Chrome 3.0, and Safari 4.0.4!

Highlights:

• Uses a DHTML "popup" which won't be blocked by popup blockers, as it is not a "real" popup window.
• New! Automatically centers the popup on the page, regardless of window size or how far down the page a user is.
• Auto-fills the PM form with the username of the person you wish to send a private message.
• Supports multiple recipients (based on user permissions).
• Standard or WYSIWYG form, advanced PM options, etc.
• Lightbox effect that dims the rest of the page.
• Preview message within the window, without being redirected elsewhere.
• Window can be closed by the user via an "X" in the upper corner.
• New! Window automatically closes after the message is sent.
• Admin CP options allow you to customize window size and which usergroups can use the popup PM modification.
• New! Intelligent Javascript file replaces every private message link with the popup links on the browser side, saving your server's resources and your templates!

Live Demo:

A live demo can be found on my website - no registration required to see the basic popup functionality, but if you want to try the actual form you'll need to register as guests/unregistered users can't use private messaging.

If you're using an old version of Popup PM:

Please uninstall it from your product manager and ensure that all template edits were removed, especially if you had to manually edit your templates. The new version does not require any template edits, but rather uses plugins and a Javascript file that replaces PM links on the fly to save your templates from being messed up.

Compatibility Notice:

This was developed on vBulletin 3.8.4 Patch Level 2. There are no guarantees that it will work on anything below that, and I'm not going to bother testing anything below the latest 3.x release since vBulletin 4.x now exists. You've been warned. :p

I found a bugsy, when you send out a new PM they do not appear under send messages.
(and save send messages is choose under settings^^).

That isn't necessarily a bug - the miscellaneous options are not a part of the popup PM window, so things like "save to sent messages" and "request read receipt" will always be set to no in the popup, regardless of what your individual settings are. The full version retains those features.

so i never installed one of these before does anyone have step by step instructions on how to do it that would be really great... im also using vbulletin 4.0 does that matter?

I recently installed this addon and like it very much. I also recently installed Attachments in PM , I edited the rw_popuppm template with the pm_newpm template edits for this addon to get attachments to show in the pm popup.
I create a new pm, add an attachment, no problem.
Upon reading the pm, there is no attachment in the pm.

Can anyone point me in the right directing to get these two addons to play well with each other?

I use this hack to inset photos anywhere including attachments.

Make sure you have it in the pm editor and you should be done. I just tried it and it worked for me.

Maybe not the best solution but it is free. :p

I added the addon you suggested but, I still can't add attachments from the Extra options section.(I can, they just wont show in pm.)
I can only add image attachments.

I'm having trouble getting this to work for me. I'm using 3.8.6. I've done the following:

I've uploaded the rw_popuppm.js file to the clientscript folder. Added the overlay.png to the images folder. I imported the xml file and set the admin with the permissions blank so all can use it.

I'm not getting anything. No errors, etc.

Any suggestions? I'd love to get this working. Thanks.

Found a bug in this if your using VBA or any other lightbox script. It was causing all kinds of mess with my Photopost lightbox...

Edit: Made the suggested changes but still not working. I am assuming that I may have a conflict with another lightbox-type plugin. Any suggestions?

Whoa, after a bit of tinkering and customizing, I got it working fine including my analytics async code. I kept the link to the author, of course.

Now I'm thinking about a way to display incoming MPs in the same way, and perhaps the registration workflow for new users should go on an overlay too.

Cant close the popup after sending a message. I have to reload the page. Im sure its something small. Anyone else run into this?

This product caused new registration problems on my board. Uninstalled.

Caution to people using it. Check if new members can register properly if you are using this mod.

I have this on 3 vbulletin sites and members register everyday, no problems.

Same here - plus it would seem that this modification has no application as far as unregistered guests go...

In same manner as displaying PM's in popup, is it possible to have quick registration form on a similar lightbox popup?

It would certainly boos user registrations as similar solutions are used for increasing lists on blogs.
