Commbull (Community Bulletin) 5.1b

1 Attachment(s)
Community Bulletin:

This mod grabs all the latest information in your forum (posts, threads, events, birthdays, etc) and puts them into a newsletter to be sent to all your members that subscribe.

This mod has been around a long time and gone through many versions. It has been a paid version for a number of years with great success, but it's time to pass on the reigns.

[edit Feb 03, 2011]
Attempted fix for sending to users that are part of multiple user groups

[installation]
- upload some files
- upload the product.xml
- make 1 mod to the usercp options template
- FULL DETAILS in the README.txt

[note] many people ask why all the images, etc don't show up in the HTML version of what is in your forum. This is because most mail clients strip out the CSS and vbulletin is 99% CSS. I have created an HTML version that is nice and clean, but is forum independent. If you know what you are doing, you can edit this HTML file and build your own newsletter.

bada_bing 12-17-2009 01:50 AM

Holy crap this is great, kinda pissed I just spent $34 from a newsleter script from a member that sells scripts here and it sucks, nothing like the original community bulletin... I will tag this mod and hear from feedback before I switch over.

yahooooh 12-17-2009 01:54 AM

thank you for release it

yahooooh 12-17-2009 01:56 AM

can you add some additional options for :
blogs
and groups

Elenna 12-17-2009 01:57 AM

Thanks so much! I purchased Commbull almost two years ago, and it is an integral part of my site. So useful for those who cannot visit daily!

For clarification, are you allowing others to modify and distribute this, or are you seeking other coders to take it over and release it?

yotsume 12-17-2009 02:07 AM

How much do you need paid to get the cron added back in so we can set it up so the newsletter automatically gets sent out again as we dictate it should be?

This is by far the best newsletter for VB.

SUGGESTIONS:
If you look at the other newsletter that is out for VB.... I suggest adding one feature where we can write up an article in a certain forum that will be called as the main newsletter article. So we can control some design elements of the newsletter and template. Just some ideas for the future of this.

Thanks for the this and all your work. Please keep this alive and developing!

christicehurst 12-17-2009 02:43 AM

A great mod and about time too for a newsletter.

very nice mod :)

the cron has been removed not because of the complexity, but because too many servers can't handle the load of sending that many emails. Most dedicated servers handle it just fine, but virtual hosted domains don't work so well.

Since we customize each newsletter with information from our other sites, a cron was no longer useful for us, so I never had the big priority to add it in.

As far as development for this, anyone is free to make mods and distribute it. If it's a good one (and tested well, i'll add it in)

Audax666 12-17-2009 05:00 AM

Hi,

awsome add-on, one of my favourites!
And the long time missing feature "unsubscribing by clicking on the unsubscribe Link" has found its way into it.
Perfect

And it's not that bad, that the cron shouldn't be used. You should always check your Newsletter for Threads you don't want in it.

Thanks and greets from the good boy with "driver licence"...;)

yahooooh 12-17-2009 05:18 AM

i use paul addon for cron e-mail so if ypu add the cron for newsletter it will not affect ther server
i have server and so many people here , make it as option so the user will choose
i wait this cron because it was perfect solution

Any plans on making this vB4? Or, would I be free to convert it myself and release it? :)

Like he wrote, it's open-source so also that will be allowed.
Hope only someone will make it ready for vb4 and also find the mistake with the cron.

Greetings
Hans

Taurus1 12-17-2009 06:45 AM

Can you please tell me where to add the full URL to show the images in the newsletter??

Thanks!

sensimilla 12-17-2009 07:22 AM

This. Won't upgrade to 4.0 without Commbull port, even though we already have a license.

TheLastSuperman 12-17-2009 11:37 AM

Oooh going to test this now, thanks ;)

[high]* TheLastSuperman marks as installed and will post back if problems but looks good imo![/high]

Edit: Can we get an ETA or a word from the author if a 4.0 release is around the corner or even planned? - Thanks :D

Leo Brazil 12-17-2009 02:12 PM

Fantastic Job. Gonna test it right now.

Just to see it for vB 4.0 when I had to upgrade my board.

I don't think he is. That's why he's releasing it OS here. He doesn't have time to work with it anymore.

Ohiosweetheart 12-17-2009 03:16 PM

I installed and sent my first newsletter. I even added extra text and an image or 3. :)

Sent without a hitch, and looked great when I received my copy.

Thanks grandeur69

euantor 12-17-2009 03:27 PM

Definitely a download for me :D

aldamon 12-17-2009 04:00 PM

Nevermind. I forgot to update the cpnav_commbull file.

Glynn58 12-17-2009 05:49 PM

Is there a way to send the email in text version only

M3xital 12-17-2009 07:19 PM

Great, thanks for sharing!

Assuming it uses the vb mail queue, then that problem can be overcome with this ;

The fact he has released it here as re-usable code tells me that the author has no time to upgrade it, and has left that task to others.

kNeeLy 12-18-2009 02:38 AM

anyone try this on 3.7? i really wanna use this...

Glynn58 12-19-2009 02:08 PM

Quite a few of my members who use Thunderbird cannot recieve this in HTML anybody know why

draver 12-20-2009 10:06 AM

All members on gmx.net also see only html code.

Alfa1 12-23-2009 11:00 PM

It would be nice if someone would take this add-on under his or her wings.

yahooooh 12-24-2009 07:16 AM

i disable it
there are issue with vbseo when you use google analytics , so the mail will be full of this java script of the google analytics

it did not depend on vbulletin mail , so even i use paul addon for mail it will not send any thing and the paul hack wil store the data of mails and stop to work

tranceup 12-25-2009 06:48 AM

I have a problem, newslleter is sent as an attachment .. Could you help me? Thank you.https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/

Would appreciate knowing the answer to this one :)

Also, getting this error when I try to preview the message

Code:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/site9/public_html/forums/admincp/commbull_functions_preview.php(121) : eval()'d code on line 25

grandeur_69 12-28-2009 02:02 PM

vb4: as we will need to do this when we upgrade all our forums, i will make it compatible when the need arises, if no one beats me to it.

Audax666: don't tell boss-man i released this :) he may not like it.

Attachment & html code: i've noticed that this has been happening to us recently, so I will need to look into this myself. it's on my task for this week.

EDIT: added doctype and cleaned up html header information. shows up properly for me now

EagleNick 12-29-2009 05:45 PM

I'm really confused as to why the HTML version of the e-mail includes images such as /images/commbull/arrow_forum.gif when no such image is even included in the download...?

grandeur_69 12-29-2009 10:50 PM

good point. this was part of the old script i had set up and there was a link in the readme to the old files ... i will upload those ASAP

the "show info starting from this date" means that you are searching through the forum data for info starting with that date. I'm not sure what timezone you are in but it's not 2010 yet, so that is why you only see 2009.
