Ablock Alert

1 Attachment(s)
I use Google Adsense on my website and considering Google Adsense is not malicious, I feel no need for adblocking software of any kind.

Therefor I have created this system which will alert members that ads are used to support the server. Wait... What's that? You don't want to annoy a member with constant alerts? No worries! This system works off of cookies, so once the member views the alert, they won't be bothered by it anymore.

Installation
1.) Upload the contents of the "upload" folder to your forums root directory.
2.) Import the product-adblockalert.xml.
3.) Mark Installed. =]

Upgrading
Import the product and select Allow Overwrite.

Template Edits
There are no template edits, however if nothing is working for you, chances are it can't find what it needs to to perform the automatic template edits. If this is the case, disable template edits for the modification via the AdminCP. Then perform these template edits.

In the headinclude template find:
<!-- CSS Stylesheet -->

After add:
$adblockalertheadinclude

Add the following code to the bottom of your navbar template:
$adblockalertnavbar

Add the following code to the top of your footer template:
$adblockalertfooter

FAQ
Q: Why did is it now working?
A: Make sure you uploaded everything and installed the mod. Also make sure it is enabled in the AdminCP.

Q: How does this work?
A: I've used adblocking software against them. I've made a fake advertisement which is never displayed on the forums, but is within the coding. Since the soul purpose of adblocking software is to of course... block ads. It blocks this advertisement, in which the script checks to see if the advertisement loaded. If not, the alert is displayed.

Changelog
5.0
Added the ability to do manual template edits.
Fixed an issue with a 4.5 template edit.
Updated the AdminCP screenshot.

4.5
HTML is now allowed in both messages.
Changed the automatic template edit for the footer to something more common.

4.0
A customizable page used for the redirection system is now included with the modification.
Updated the AdminCP screenshot.

3.0
Added a redirection system. By enabling or disabling the cookie system you can have the redirection only happen once, or an unlimited amount of times. Also, choosing index only means the redirect will only happen on the index.
Updated the AdminCP screenshot.

2.7
Added usergroup permissions.
Fixed an issue which caused the alert to not display on all pages when wanted.
Updated the AdminCP screenshot.

2.5
Added an option to disable the cookie system.
Fixed the non caching of two templates.
Updated the AdminCP screenshot.

2.0
Option to change the alert message.
Option to change the alert color.
Option to change the alert alignment.
Option to only display alert on the forum index.
No more template edits

1.5
Complete rewrite.
Removed javascript popup and added a VBulletin style alert.
New Demo
New screenshot.

1.2
Fixed an issue where the alerts would sometimes pop up multiple times. This was due to the cookie relying on VBulletin sessions instead of times.

1.1
Disabled the checks for Internet Explorer since the script is unpredictable in IE.

1.0
Release.

You don't have to login to see it. I just disabled it for now, but thanks. I'll check into that.

I´m using a adblock tool but no message appears visiting your demo.

Nickfrikscape 12-12-2009 02:11 PM

As I said in previous posts, I don't have it enabled anymore. I'm working on new features. Possibly instead of an alert popping up, just a notification from VBulletin.

I just posted a different demo, it's the same concept, but it's not running VBulletin. I use it for testing purposes.

Anyone who uses this mod, I suggest you check ASAP if your site is accessible via Internet Explorer, because my site won't show up using this mod through internet explorer, this is a serious issue which should be fixed or uninstall this mod, I uninstalled this mod and I'm going to try a different one at https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...ight=adblocker

Instead.

ChopSuey 12-13-2009 10:14 PM

Q: Why did is it now working?

What kind of question is that?

Works fine for me in IE, I just think you are trying to advertise a modification that is no longer supported nor working. I'll do some more tests in older IE versions later today when I wake up, but the newest version of IE works fine.

Anyway the modification that you are referring to does not work thanks to the newest version of Adblock patching it. See the thing is, that modification would block access to your website, which is what Adblock frowns apon. So by not blocking access and only showing an alert which displays once, maybe Adblock would be a little more considerate of those websites out there trying to make an honest living. If not then the developer is an ***.

A bit of feedback.......

I maintain and update a "largeish"( Is that a word ? ) VBulletin forum and have installed your modification today at the owners request. Unfortunately it hasnt been succesful and a number of members without adblocking software have complained of receiving the popup multiple times.

After having a bit of a play around with multiple browsers, I also received it using IE8 even though I had no adblocker , but didnt receive it using Firefox with Adblocker Plus installed and enabled. Unfortunately I am going to have to uninstall or disable it unless a newer version becomes available which is more reliable. This isnt meant to be a criticism, just honest feedback from a large and busy site.

Thanks
Andrew67

This modification uses auto templates. If you are having trouble with parts of the modification, make sure you have all the search related parts found in the modification such as:
<!-- CSS Stylesheet --> (headinclude)
<!-- /content area table --> (footer)

TheInsaneManiac 12-25-2009 07:11 AM

1.5 released. No more javascript alert. It now uses VBulletin style notices.

Done with the redirection system; however for 4.0 I can't do unless someone has a 4.0 board I can use, cause I don't have the money for the upgrade.

What is the link to your site? You are aware that by default the modification is disabled for admins, super mods, and mods right?

By looking at your template I can tell the adblock_script did not load. Check your footer template and make sure <!-- end wrap --> is found somewhere along in the footer.

If it's not found add it towards the bottom of the footer template. If you do not find it, please post back and I will modify the product so that you can insert template hooks in your templates to allow your customized template to find the locations easier.

OK, I couldn't find that. I added it at the bottom of my footer template. So now, what should I do?

Thanks for your help!!

:eek: LOL....thanks a lot mate! Awesome! Marked it Installed yesterday already! One small thing though. Is there a way to increase the font size for the notification?

linuxututs 12-26-2009 05:49 PM

This looks like a GREAT Mod, but doesn't appear to be working for me.
Can someone who has an adblock app install in their web browser please confirm it for me.

My Site.

Thanks a million,

Yea, I can't remember if I ever had enabled html for that box. Try just
Code:

<font size="8">Message</font>
Just change the 8 to what size you want. Again, not tested as I don't know if I ever fixed the HTML issue.

No yours doesn't work either. You seem to be having the same issue as Tauras1. I don't know why you guys styles don't have them, cause all of mine except the VBulletin default style has them. Anyway for now just use this temporary fix:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost....3&postcount=21

In the new update I change the template edits and also enable hooks so that you guys can place the hook in the templates where they need to go.

linuxututs 12-26-2009 07:03 PM

Yeah, I had already found that fix, but doesn't seem to do any good.

I re-implemented it though. ( Maybe just my adblocker, no way of telling )

Thanks for the quick reply to Mate.

The one that shows the latest posts is my unreleased modification. If you mean the one that shows the last members of 24 hours, that's Cyb's mod.

Hmmm I guess I didn't fix the html issue. I'll fix that in the next release. For now try:
Code:

<font size=\"8\">Message</font>

As I just told Taurus1, HTML is acting funky right now due to me using quotations to display the alert. Will be fixed in the next version. If you want to try something to fix it, try opening the product and finding:
var alertmessage="$vboptions[adblock_alert_message]"

Change to:
var alertmessage=$vboptions[adblock_alert_message]

Or

var alertmessage='$vboptions[adblock_alert_message]'

OK! That did it! Works great now mate! I would suggest changing the fontsize to 6 though, nearly got blinded.....lol

PS: Looks even better with the <blink></blink> codes around it!!

Thank you very much!!!

Tried both Mate. Still no luck. :(

If you come up with some more ideas, I'll be glad to help solve the problem with you Mate.

Been up for over 26 hours now, so I'm going to bed right now, but will be back soon.

Thanks, and keep up the GREAT work Mate.

Cheers,

Cheers,

Alright lets just see if we can't get the whole product itself to work for now, I'll fix html for you in the next update. Make sure you have <!-- end wrap --> in the bottom of your footer, and change your Alert Message to something with no html in it. Just for testing changing it to like Testing the product or something, just to make sure it all displays.

I say this because you are using div tags to center, when you could just use <center> and fix everything. If you must use a div try this:
Code:

<div align=\"center\"><br>You are using adblocking software. Ads are a general way to cover server costs. Please add our domain to your whitelist.</br><br>NOTE: You will only see this message once.</br> <br>Thank You, LinuxTuts</br></div>
OR

Code:

<center><br>You are using adblocking software. Ads are a general way to cover server costs. Please add our domain to your whitelist.</br><br>NOTE: You will only see this message once.</br> <br>Thank You, LinuxTuts</br><center>

In reality you don't even need to center it because the product has an option in the AdminCP to center it for you. So really you should just enable that and change your code to:
Code:

You are using adblocking software. Ads are a general way to cover server costs. Please add our domain to your whitelist.<br>NOTE: You will only see this message once.</br> <br>Thank You, LinuxTuts</br>

Since install, I have been getting an error only in IE, with browser that doesnt block ads.
somehow the bottom row of links (contact us, admin panel, etc) is missing but only on the homepage, not on sub forum pages.
Any idea how to fix this?

tsuehpsyde 02-06-2010 05:32 PM

FWIW, I put two newlines in the text box for "Alert Message" and it causes the alert to disappear. Not a huge problem, but a problem none the less. :)

BirdOPrey5 06-24-2010 01:02 PM

I went to the demo with ad-block enabled and got no alert or message whatsoever... Is there a working demo anywhere?

BirdOPrey5 06-24-2010 01:43 PM

Sorry installed then uninstalled...
First the directions in the top post and the readme file are different- completely different template edits- I ended up doing both just to cover my bases.

Next the message was only showing up to unregistered users in firefox only, in google chrome with ad block no message was displayed... to registered users I wasn't seeing any alerts even though I removed groups 5|6|7 from the 'whitelist'

I wish this worked better/as advertised but just too many issues to keep installed as a work in progress.
