First Post Editable Indefinitely
 

I'm just reposting my 4.0 mod into the 3.8 section since it works just fine on a 3.8 board also.

Sometimes you want your users to be able to edit the first post in their thread indefinitely but still have a time limit on all other posts in the thread. This would be useful if they want to constantly update their first thread with new information, or an updated list of some sort way past the normal editing time limit. This modification will allow them to edit that first post indefinitely.

Notes
- I wrote this for my own site and it works exactly how I want it to. I have no plans to change it or expand it in any way
- No, you may not change the time limit, this only works for if the time limit for the first post is 0 - indefinite.

To install:

1. Import product-lynne_first_post_editable.xml
2. By default, editing first post indefinitely is Off per forum. To turn it on, go into the Forum Manager > select your forum to Edit > Make first post in thread editable indefinitely > Yes

To uninstall:

1. Uninstall "First Post Editable Indefinitely"

On a different matter (I know it's not related to this hack here but since you seem to know how to handle this...) just tell me: would you be able to code another hack like this here: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=136448 adding usergroup permissions too? Many people would really use it I'm sure.

Install and put option "Make first post in thread editable indefinitely" in the "Hide Hack Resurrection Options"....

I'm not going to be modifying this one for usergroups. It would be real easy to add that into the conditions (is_member_of()) in the plugins if you want to do that.

I was not talking about the hack here but about a new hack regarding the possibility to edit all posts (instead of only the first post) with no time limit for specific forums. (For usergroups, yes this could be added by conditions for sure).

So, it's a little bit like your hack but acting differently. It's just that nobody seems to want to do one. But if it's not in your plans it's OK anyway. I thank you for this hack here. :)

I am just writing products for my own site and then releasing them here. I have no need to have this time limit to be set by usergroup, so I just don't see myself spending any time writing a modification to do so.

No problem, I just tried... It's only that I would like to be able to have this for all posts, not only for the first one and I don't know how to do that.

I've posted the code for a plugin before on how to do that. It's somewhere on this site.

Thats already a feature of vBulletin AdminCp>vBulletin Options>Message Posting and Editing Options>Time Limit on Editing of Posts but beware that this is depndent on Time Limit on Editing of Thread Title

I know it's an included feature but it's a global feature applied on all forums! There is no possibility to change time limit on individual forums... This is why I'm asking for this feature...

Hmm Running 3.8.4 here and the forum + subforums I want this enabled on doesn't show an EDIT button for the users first post of the thread (the OP).

Anything I should check?

Did you set the option to Yes in the Forum Manager?

The forums all have 'Make first post in thread editable indefinitely' set to Yes...

Check the usergroup permissions to make sure they normally are allowed to edit posts. If you don't allow them to ever edit posts, then this won't change that. Also, try disabling your other mods and see if perhaps this one has a conflict with another.

I have checked the usergroup permissions and the usergroup is allowed to edit posts. I've disabled the modifications and go back and forth with no luck unfortunately.

3.8.4 Patch Level 1 is exactly what I run. Shame this would be an awesome mod.

I really don't know what it could be. If you look at the plugins, they are pretty simple.

Do you have ajax enabled?

Hmm bummer All Ajax features are currently enabled on my board. I will continue tinkering see if I can see what is causing it. Cheers.

I just had the same problem, here's what fixed it for me in 3.8.4

Open up the .xml file and on line 52, replace $vbulletin->userinfo['userid'] with $this->registry->userinfo['userid']

Save it, re-upload it and it should work.

Have installed to trial. I don't suppose there's any chance we could have a global setting (as opposed to going through each and every sub forum to turn on/off?). :)

If you want the default to be On, just edit the xml file to make the default in the database "1" instead of "0"

Sometimes you need to play with the Execution Order of plugins in order to get them to work together the right way.

It wasn't written to be a usergroup option, but I suppose you could go through the plugins and just put a condition around them to only be run if you are in usergroup xxx.

I'm still not able to figure out how I can make thread titles indefinitely editable too (Specific forum only). Setting this in vBulletin Options will make titles editable for the defined time limit for all the forums. Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't know. Perhaps you can modify this modification to make it do a per forum title editable also, but I haven't looked into it and it isn't currently part of this modification.

The issue is that members cannot update their thread titles while updating opening posts which I believe should be possible. Updating "Title" field only updates the title of opening post and not that of the thread. Not sure if it's a bug or we can get around with this with a slight tune up?
