Local install of vB4 - first impressions

Good:

1. Awesome speed :D
2. The style looks neat and easily customizable.
3. Quick reply makes the cursor move to the bottom of the thread. Awesome!
4. The picture manager is super!
5. Installation was smooth. The next stpe is to try to upgrade my forum - I hope it will be smooth too ;)
6. Calendar looks good.

Bad:

1. Couldn't find "after first/last post" ad locations in the ad manager.
2. I don't know how to add more tabs in the top menu bar. Wouldn't it be nice if there's a place where we can create more tabs?
3. Polls are still the same

I am very impressed as well... Honestly this is what I have wanted all along! However I too would like to see an easy way to add tabs.

Not so easy when you want to make intensive graphic changes, the stylevar manager is extremely limited as it is presently.

How do I revert back to 3.8.4? simply do the same as an upgrade install?

Paul M 11-14-2009 03:10 PM

You dont, there is no reversion policy other than restore from backup.

Did you do ANY of these steps listed here: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=227933

? If you thought ahead then maybe if not then Paul is 100% right.

This is why the first step in most mods is always bacc up database.

Does anyone have their site running using the complete beta vB4 (CMS, forum & blog)? I'd like to see what it looks like. Let me clarify; does anyone have it running with the "default" appearance and no custom skins. Just bone stock.

Paul M 11-27-2009 03:21 PM

vbulletin.com is a default installation.

Thanks. I know I read that there is no stylevar to change background, text, etc. and you have to add your own CSS.
Does anyone know what option/s will be in the Gold to make those style changes?

Zaiaku 11-27-2009 05:54 PM

I did an install of the vb4 suite. Messed with it for about 2 days. CMS was total garbage to me. To me it was just a very messy version of vbadvanced with alot of un-needed extras I didnt want even in vbadavanced. So I just made my own. Blog system, seriously I didn't like the idea of these either becuase didn't want my site looking the blogs on myspace which most only did aout 5 if that and none useful.

So then I made another install with just the forums. Added my own cms, so much cleaner and alot esier to style compared t the vb cms.

The stylevar make it much more difficult to style the forums. So many little small options and its almost impossible to figure what actually edits what. Sometimses you make changes and everything still looks the same. So I'm in totally agreement with EidolonAH's Avatar
EidolonAH. Most vb4 sites will look the same except for colors for a very long time.

Man I did not want to hear that at all! The CMS was the seller for me. Let's just hope that the final product is more user friendly. I'm a consumer end user...not a coder or designer. With all due respect, it it's not in the software already, there is very little help to be had outside of a patient persons that try to help on here. At least that's been my experience.
